Just listening to you chat makes me happy. Thanks for all the great videos man. You’re humble and educated and excited. Thanks!
Glad to share these videos with you. Thanks for hanging out.
That’s a really neat board with some cool features. I bet that helped you quite a bit from what you have. Worth getting excited over mate! Sweet stuff! I like it!👍🏻😊
Lots of good info covered on this equipment. Eventually I may need to get one of these. Many thanks for sharing your expertise! 👍
Just got my Livetrak L-20
Thanks for posting this video. It helped me understand how to program the outs and what the scenes are
seems like this is ever recorded tutorial video. just loved it. very neat & clean explanations🙏
thanks man love all the chats, i have zoom l 12 and its great to have all yhis info helps so much that you speak my language! incredible.
Hey thanks Matthew good job this was very helpful to an old dog like me at 72. Just don't have the patience or focus I once had. Your 5th reason was the one I was hoping for because it is nice to have a visual of some sort to keep things in perspective especially when editing tracks. I guess thats why they make DAW'S right? DUH very helpful video TY
Matthew Stratton, I love the way you Demo. You are my greatest influence in purchasing this machine. Which I will do ASAP. Thank you so much:)
If it fits your needs, it is a really nice device.
Brilliant review. Exactly the level of detail I was looking for.
Right on. 👊
Thanks for the video, well done. I appreciate what you do for your channel. Can you please make a video best way or reasons too use Zoom with any quality DAW. For most, a DAW is imperative and physical mixer recorder is secondary, depending on the individual of course.
this is like the pin point of this topic on youtube
definately needed
Once setup and working it is a fantastic home studio tool for recording. I like the dual option to record live jams direct to the SDCard or record into a DAW. A pain to setup but once it is working a great tool.
Excellent overview, thanks!
Great video! I have a much older hardware mixer/recorder and this Zoom looks much nicer.
It's nice. The preamps are better than some older gear I have had. I dig it. Thanks for checking out the video. 👊
I have a L-12. I love it. Great for live and fabulous for recording a live show.
Nice! Do you record the live shows?
Glad I've found this video. Huge thanks! Just want to ask if I can integrate this on OBS studio for livestreaming?
Dope video man it’s pretty affordable too thought it was for sure going to be like 1000 lol zoom is doing there thang.
Yeah, the price isn't bad. There are often deals for $100 off too. The Zoom L-20 is $999 normally. It is similar with more inputs and other features here and there.
Excellent, simple and easy to understand video. Are there any differences between L-12 and L-20?
Dude, honestly I wanted to create a channel to inform very specific stuff about gear, but since I started watching your videos I think there is no need for creating one. Good job. So useful info! i have some performances in my channel you might like. Cheers!
Thanks. You can always start one too. I'll check em out.
Great video explaining just what is different about the Zoom instead of wasting our time with obvious features. I finally understand the scene and fader modes. I have been recording to a Zoom R24 for over 10 years now. What a great way to record my solo performances. I am the one man show, musician, sound designer, recording engineer, effects designer, mix down and mastering engineer. One huge feature you left out for the one-man-show is the large VU meters, only Zoom uses these pro VU meters on every channel, easy to see while testing your performance if you are overloading a track. My Zoom is getting old and heavily used, I have recorded over 70 albums with it, and it has NEVER failed, never corrupted, never had to be restarted. Latency is not an issue, and overdubbing is as easy as it gets. I am a computer expert, repair and maintain for clients and myself, but while computers are great for my graphic design business, I don't want a computer for recorking music. I don't want to see music; I just want to hear it. I hope the L-12 will be as dependable and the same audio quality of my R24???
Great minds think alike. I am also a recording artist, Multi-instrumentalist, Composer, Producer and sound engineer as well. I also have a Zoom R24 that I have owned since 2012 and never had any problems with it even to this day. I have recorded all of my albums with this unit. 70 albums...WOW! You got me beat! I have recorded 12 and still use it to this day. I got some catching up to do to get to 70 albums (LOL 😊), but way to go 👍. I also avoid using computers or DAWs because of crashes, plus it's too tedious to learn. I like all-in-one units and the R24 has helped every step of the way. I have been contemplating on the L-12, just to see how it is. Much Success to You and Your Music. Keep The Music Alive 🎶 🎵.
A real quick thank you before I ask, you have always been very responsive and I appreciate you. I'm looking at the L-20, can I make an individual mix channel in my DAW (reason) for each channel on the mixer? So I am recording 10 different inputs at once, can those 10 inputs each have their own mix channel in my DAW? Thanks brother!
I did a video about how the inputs and outputs show up in Ableton Live 10 that may help answer some of your questions here: czcams.com/video/mNlkTdiZ--Y/video.html
The L-20 actually gives you 22 separate inputs. Each mic jack is one track, and the two stereo inputs are two tracks each (Left and Right.) The Master output also comes in as two tracks.
So yes. You can record 10 sources at once, and each goes to a separate track on the DAW.
I hope the next iteration will have motorized faders. That would be the bomb!
Hi Matthew. Excellent video. Can you advise me how to engage the phantom power?
Hey Matthew.. Bill Betway Here ..Thanks for shearing All these info .. My question is how do you go about recording
vocal with zoom 12.. don't have one as yet but I do like it ..so for vocal is it a good choice ...thanks bro keep doing what
your doing bless up
Really good video Matt. I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to get answers for anywhere else? Is this a powered mixer or do I need a power amp for live performances? And can you explain the method of using tracks 9/10 or 11/12 when using this as with a DAW? Thanks Matt!
I was on the fence for a lightweight, small footprint mixer between this, AR12c, and dp24. Your video really helped clarify the choice of L-12 for me. Really appreciate a good review, and going into more detail than others. Keep up great work!!
you are the ligth... thanks a lot dude.
Great info, thorough...Subscribed.
Awesome, thank you!
This is awesome!
Great vid, thanks.
So helpful!
Thanks!
Great info. Thank you 😀
You're welcome. 👊
Thank you a great detailed review on important features
You rock man. How did you learn so much about audio and gear? Did you go to school for recording engineering? Thanks for the great videos.
Experience and reading.
Matt… thanks for the informative videos… which is better?? .. Tascam model 24… soundcraft 22mtr.. Or the zoom L12?? Help me bro… salute
Just a few notes about Scenes on the L-8. Not sure if these apply to the L-12.
Projects only save one set of mixer settings; Master, A, B, C, etc.
Scenes are saved with the console, but are *not* saved with the Project to the SD Card.
If you load a Project, and then load a Scene, the mixer settings from the Scene will supercede the mixer settings from the Project.
If you turn off the console via the switch on the back, the mixer settings loaded by the Scene will overwrite the Project settings. If however you eject the SD Card before turning off the console, the Project settings will be preserved.
Scenes cannot be deleted without resetting the console to factory settings.
(LiveTrak L-8 firmware 1.12)
Looks super solid 💯
Yeah man. Good stuff for sure.
🎶 Hi Matthew ... do you know what the preset settings are for the onboard compressor .. i.e. ratio / attack / release times etc.?! Also could you do a tutiorial say using a vocal mike and demonstrate the minimum and maximum settings using the compressor knob... 🎙 good stuff thanks ...
As ist is a 1-knob compressor it is likely a method akin to the DBX Overeasy function. That means that these values are reduction dependent. The harder the compressor works, the less extreme the settings are and if you use it lightly the settings are little more pronounced. That makes for a well-rounded and musical curve most of the time.
I am an avid DBX 163x user and own a L-20 and I haven't noticed a major difference in function between them. Besides the character, of course. The Zoom comps are very clean sounding and the 163x are... not.
Great video. You're the man! Do you know of a list of verified good SD cards for the L12?
I have been using the Scan Disk #10 without a single problem.
I wish you could make a comparison video between this and the Tascam Model 12. You're really good at explaining things and would love to get your thoughts more than anyone's. I have the Model 12 myself but am so lost on the specialized functions of the 7/8 and 9/10 tracks and I'm sure you'd be the guy to sort this out for those of us lacking your "Brainiac from Smartron 6" powers! ;-) Cheers!
That is a great idea!
I purchased the tascam model 12 first.
UNF it last one song. An there was a problem with the outputs both the monitor mix an main mix. If you turned the main slider things dropped out. An back in. Sweetwater took there time refunding my card after reading some negative reviews. I went with the Zoom L12. It works great. Be sure to pay attention to this video an other as they are really helpful.
I can say that I liked the features on the tascam better. For me being able too assign tracks to input 1 to 1 thru 12 was really nice. For instance you can record multiple guitar parts with one track. An not have a spaghetti mess of cords. Just reassign the any one of the track's 1 thru 12. No need for a patch bay or multiple cords.
I have a friend has the 32 trach tascam model an I'm going to pick it up as well.
If you look at the very end of the review the tascam models are more prone to problems out of the box
Me I think it a Sweetwater issue.? I lost time recording an $$😢. Good luck hope this helps you😊
The large metering on each track of the Zoom makes it a no contest winner.
Love your vids man! I was tossed up between purchasing the Tascam Model 16 or the Livetrack L-12... but Zoom just dropped the L-8 for $399. Same features, plus some new ones, as the L-12, less inputs of course, and battery powered option for mobility. It’s geared towards podcasters and mobile musicians.
I initially wanted the Tascam Model 16 for its analog circuitry, more inputs and feature flexibility. Even though it jumps $200 in cost compared to the L-12, I think it’s totally worth it. However, with Zoom now having a lineup from the L-8 through L-20, I’m hoping Tascam drops one more counsel with 8 inputs since they have a lineup from 16 to 24. I would pay $399 - $499 for that.
For the time being I’m going with the L-8 and love the fact that manufactures are producing mixing boards with high quality recording features integrated in one. I think if you are DAWless or use a computer setup, you can’t go wrong with these tools.
If the L-8 is anything like the L-12, which it looks to be, then $400 is a good deal. I know it has different uses, but the Zoom H6 is still going for $330, so a bit more money for some more inputs and the 4 headphones out is a good deal.
who is selling it for L-8 for $399 sweet water 599
Chester Higgs On Sweetwater the L-12 is priced at $599 and the L-8 is priced at $399. But, you can still check B&H Photo Video and Zzounds.
Sorta got your wish with the Tascam 12?
Personally, I'm happy with my 20+ year old Tascam 2488 and Alesis Midiverb4 for mixing and recordin, and a more recent M-Track Duo audio interface if I want to add other instruments or weird synth sound effects or simply upload to the computer for trancoding... Love the video however (and the others that use the Zoom as comparison)... maybe just a personal preference, but sometimes we "oldies" are steeped in our ways ;) ;)
Very, cool... complicated but cool..
Superb review....
Hi Mathew I am new at this.
I have a question: what is the different between L 12 and the live trek 12 digital?
I really want to get into recording, after watching your videos I'm interested.
Thank you Jim
Very informative video. Will youdo a video that explains how you connect your mpc to the Zoom L12? I want to connect my MPC X to the L12 to the Laptop. How do I connect my Mpc X midi out (I have 2 sound modules connected to the Mpc X)? Any onfo or video would help. Thanks in advance, keep up the good work.
It really depends on how you want to work.
For example: if you have the MPC X in standalone, you can plug the audio output of the X into the L-12. Then, send MIDI out of the MPC X to your sound modules, and plug the audio out of your sound modules into your L-12. That way you can record your MPC X and 2 separate sound modules on their own tracks in the L-12.
The laptop complicates things. I need to know is your goal to record onto the SD card of the L-12 or do you want to use the L-12 as an audio interface? Are you using the MPC X in controller mode?
I use to have thé Zoom R8 and R16, all these Zoom multitracks are nice for the price but it would be better with midi (to communicate clock with Mpc Live for example)!!!
Although the Soundcraft MTK 12 is different and has less features, if you compared only the features that they both have, how would you rate them head to head? I have a few of the same gear that you have and was wondering if I should maybe streamline and maybe purchase this. Keep the content coming!👍
I really like being able to record to the SD card on the Zoom L-12. The Soundcraft doesn't have the option. Other then that, the soundcraft sports AUX outs rather than having multiple headphone sends. It also has two group channel which can be useful. The MTK 12 has more options for USB returns as well, which may be to your advantage if you want to use the console with a computer.
To me the L-12 is more flexible with the ability to record to the SD card and to the computer. If you record to the SD card there are even overdub options.
Very nice. Now to save up :)
thank *YOU*
You’re welcome.
Can you do a video showing how to bounce, resample between a mixer and two samplers, avoiding feedback, and not having to disconnect/reconnect and audio cables or USB?
That's a great idea. I will see what I can do.
Did you consider and/or try the ProSonus StudioLive SLM AR Series? Sorry if this is in the video and I will watch it when I get home. :)
Hi I own the Zoom L-12 and it's great. Can you tell me how I'd connect a powered wedge monitor rather than in ear monitors? Would I connect it to the Monitor Out A Jacks (the L and R outputs, to the left of the Monitor Out Phone Jacks)? Or can it be connected to the Monitor Out Phone Jacks? Are the Monitor Out Phone Jacks balanced or unbalanced, and what about the Monitor Out A Jacks? Thanks.
Hi Matt! I am considering getting an L12. I do a lot of different types of gigs in my community.....one of them being a Karaoke DJ. My software is Virtual DJ for running karaoke files. I use a presonus audio interface connected between my laptops usb connection and the interface itself. I run out of the interface into my current Mackie 4 channel mixer then out of the mixer to my powered speakers.
Using this mixer, can I eliminate the presonus interface and just use my computers USB connection to L12 connection to send music to the L12?
I'm just trying to eliminate the extra piece of equipment if it's not needed.
The Virtual DJ software recognizes the interface in a pop up window when it;s connected giving me a choice of other possible interface/output connections....so i was wondering if the L12 would show up in the Virtual DJ's list of devices to connect to?
Thanks!
Hello man thanks for the video:) a question....on zoom r24 i can use the mastering effect as a insert effect "live"....is this the same thing for this mixer? Thanks
Features are great but the master point is : the quality of preamps and converters. That's why lot of experienced producers never check that kind of products (we pay the features). it's better to sacrifice features to invest money in professional preamps and converters : audio interface without all that features . Thank you for the vidéo !
Well, a single professional pre-amp can cost as much as the entire LiveTrak ... but can I suggest you come back with actual test results to compare the converters on this unit to the ones available in something like an Avid or Apogee interface?
Hi Matt, I have my L-12 and my MPC Live 2 fully updated but L-12 won't show up on the MPC audio interface section?
I saw you had yours working, wondering what might be wrong? Settings on L-12 I'm missing?
Thanks for any help.
Also took your MPC course, was super helpful!
Thank you very much :-)
You are welcome
I’ve been trying to get away from using cubase for years, it’s the only software I use- I use just hardware instruments. So when I saw your videos on the MPC Live, it prompted me to buy one. I have pretty much moved away from cubase for MIDI (which is tough and the main thing I use a computer for) but I realize that now I need to tackle getting a good multitrack device. I’ve never considered them, because I use a decent interface and record 24/96. But it seems like this can do all that. Basically, I’m just wondering if you think it’s another good alternative. I grew up using 4 tracks, so I like that concept- and I have some really nice mixers, but this seems like it will replace my cubase multitracking needs. Am I correct in assuming this? With the right skills can I move from a computer running cubase (MIDI and Audio multitracking) and instead use an MPC live and a zoom live track?
I have a Zoom L-12 digital mixer, and I'm a little bit confused about how to set the mid EQs on it. It has a channel strip and you can adjust the EQ for each channel for High, Mid and Low. However, for the mids it also has a 'Mid Frequency Knob' (which is the one above the Mid knob in the pic below).
In the manual it says that the Mid Frequency Knob 'adjusts the central frequency of the mid frequency equalisation'. So presumably you turn that dial to choose which frequency you want, and then you use the 'Mid' knob below it to boost or cut that frequency.
However, what I'm confused about is this - let's say I choose the 1k frequency, then I boost it up a notch. Then I choose the 2k frequency, then boost or cut that. Now what happens to the 1k frequency I previously adjusted? Does that stay boosted or does it then reset when I select another frequency? The manual isn't very clear on this. Is it possible to boost/cut multiple EQ frequencies on the mids on the Zoom L-12, or just one at a time/one only?
Thanks.
Hi Brother Matthew thanks for help may i asking you a special question how do i set up two effect for the same two microphone for Vocal singer used how can i do that ?
Aesome, thanks Matthew! Question: Can you use the headphone outs as sub mixes? I'd like to route certain tracks over to external loopers and grooveboxes. I have heard mixed information on if this is possible with a quality enough and loud enough signal being sent over to the headphone outs. I understand they are TRS stereo? Thanks!
great idea the impedance level would be my concern, I'm gonna try it and let ya know.
@@shawnbrunelle3527 So as an update, I am successfully doing this method. Just make sure your cables are stereo TRS. It's awesome!
Nice video. If we play live and take a break, can we bring our Android or iPhone through this mixer? If so, what is that process? What buttons do we hit etc. Thanks
You can always send an aux line out of your phone and plug it into one of the stereo inputs and keep it muted until you need it. You might need a dongle depending on what phone you have.
Question... If you don't need all the cue mixes, given that you can only do one effect at a time, could you use a cue mix as an extra send to an external delay and bring it back into a channel? Then you can mix it as a global or individual cue mix.
I have the impression you can use it 48 khz 24 bit also when set up as audio card for a pc/daw (not only 44.1 as you said). Cheers
Higher resolutions of 96kH there are restrictions in the channel strip. 44.1, 48, and 96kHz options. 16 bit and 24 bit.
Do you recommend this or the Tascam Model 12?
Hello.I have a question. Is it possible to connect two stereo players on channel 12 simultaneously? RCA and TS jack.Thank YOU!
Would it had been better to first give an overview prior the full product review? For instance: does the Zoom operate as an USB interface? Is the filters or compressors analogue?
Would this be a good mixer for a mobile Dj?
Great video man! I was looking at getting one for a DAWless set up, could never get my head around DAWs and was wondering if this would be good for recording acoustic covers and demos? Also would the effects record on the master track on the sd card?
Hello. The effects are recorded onto the master track on the SD card. You can certainly use this as a standalone recording device. I have used it several times for Videos. If you are just doing covers and demos it should be fine. I know there are other stand alone devices that are more capable and have more effects and the ability to add mastering effects for example. Check out the Tascam DP-24SD as an example. ➡️amzn.to/2snXhbx
@@MatthewStratton Cool, I was looking at that very Tascam aswell, It's a toss up between the 2 at the moment. Thanks for the reply!
If you're only looking for DAWless operation, and recording acoustic covers and demos, then the Zoom R16 is very much a viable option at half the price of the L12.
With touch sensitive motorfaders (total recall ?!)I would buy it instantly !
Yeah, motorized faders would be a step up... but probably add significantly to the cost. I actually got used to the way the faders work pretty quickly; they're fade-through, so you have to adjust a fader to the set point indicated by the LED before it changes the mix. It honestly only took me a few minutes to get used to how these faders work, compared to the motorized faders on the Allen & Heath mixers I use.
Hello simple question, can I use it by plugging a Samsung laptop into the audio output to do live Instagram or other? (basic I have an irig stream and mixer and my Android phone for live stream singing... but if I can do the same and better with this machine it will be great thank you for your answer
I also use it like it a lot. On my channel is a tutorial on how to use the headphone outs as send channels for external fx devices. But one very big problem with the L12 is, you can only record one take to each channel. Overdubbing deletes the previous recording. This is annoying because you have to decide which is the best take right after the recording.
Can't you change this in system? I use a R24 and it has the option of choosing up to 8 takes per channel.
@@christianboddum8783 thank you for this idea, but the L12 can't do this... good to hear the R24 can!
Simple solution to overdub issue: export audio file for track to USB stick. Overdub. Save every new take to USB stick if in doubt, or just keep the ones you are sure are better. Then load in the best take on the track and use that. I don't have one myself (yet), but that seems very easy according to the manual.
@@hakonsoreide thx for this solution. I found out about that way just a few months ago. It was a game changer! Now I am using an Akai MPC One for vocals and other recordings. The final mix is still done with the L12.
are there any latency issues when using this as the audio interface with a daw? EDIT: By "issues", I mean would one be better off with a focusrite or komplete audio 6 in terms of latency? I would like to record multiple synths (two keyboard synths and a drum machine) while applying effects in FL studio.
hello i use livetrak 12 in studio as audio interface my question is about slate microphone i only want to use it for communication but the dogan also comes from meinestudio monitors but i only want to do it through headphones thanks for the answer
Hi Matt, Quick question, How do I go about adding the video from my Zoom Q2N to the audio of my Zoom L-12?? I'm Doing a drum cover and want to use the mixed audio from my L12 of the drums. Also as for the music I'm playing to do I just ad that to another track??? Thanks again.
Hey Mathew, for live playback, lets say I have 12 tracks of audio to be the click and additional sounds for the live band, can any of the 12 SD recorded tracks be routed to any output? Further does the until support song positions? ....so then the drummer who is operating this on stage can call up a playback of whatever song is required next... any feedback is much appreciated
Hello good day is the zoom be able to loop after recording?
Hi Matthew, which one do you prefer between Livetrak L-12 or 12 Mtk for a small church?
When using the scene function, how does it handle (further) changes to the faders/dials? For example once the scene is loaded and I want to turn ch1 up or down.... does it jump to the fader 'value' as soon as the fader is moved, or do I have to move the fader through the setting of the scene (to "capture" control)?
Hello. You have to move the fader to it's saved position before the fader has an effect. The two lights that are lit next to the fader when you change the scene indicate the relative position of the saved fader level. Yes, it is a "capture" control operation.
Man, I have a Scarlett 4i4 and want to get a Zoom L-12. The thing here is, besides the faders and that the mixer is a multitrack mixer. Which has less latency or best sound quality? I afford the Zoom L-12, but I don't want to decrease the sound quality or latency.
Can it play back and travel through the recorded individual tracks?
Please which of this two is better. Zoom livetrack L-12
And
Tascam DP-24 SD
Should I get the zoom 12 versus the Tascam Model 12
Can you tweak the eq of each monitor output individually separate from the main output? Thanks
No. The EQ section is per input track, and they are the same on all monitor outputs. If you need separate EQs for a particular input, you'd need to split it off and pull the source into two channels, so you can EQ one for one mix and the other copy for the monitor mix.
Does the individual headphone mix work when the L12 is being used as an interface on a laptop? Or is this only for other applications? Sorry, very new to this interface!
Yes. You can still use the functions of the L-12 like normal when using as an audio interface. One of the pluses about it. Keep in mind though that if you want to monitor your computer through the L-12 you will need to use the USB return on tracks 9/10 or 11/12 on the L-12.
Hi , is L-12 could do podcast with telephone interview & live-streaming ?
what is that pad-like instrument (probably for use with Ableton) with an LCD panel in the intro of the video, pls? :)
It is the Akai Force. It is a standalone instrument now but there will be a firmware update to use it with Ableton in the future.
Does saving the mix to sd save the scene setup for the faders and both fx also setup also ?
Hey hey brother.. Matthew, have you made any vids on the R-16? I seen none. I'm just an old garage drummer and the problem may be simply MY lack of knowledge .. LOL This is my first digital and I cant even get backing tracks into/from & to my speakers w a decent sound/volume level.. I'm sucking man.. Help
just got the zoom , was looking the tascam model 12 , but uhmm . aux sends / headphones sends won it.
I know if you use this with the DAW it records pre-fader, but can you monitor it post-fader? So our band does silent band practices and we use plugins to monitor our instruments. So can we still create custom headphone mixes whilst monitoring through the DAW?
Does it applies different effects for each channel ??
How does the 48v mic work? Looks like one button is for multiple channels? What if I only have one Mic requiring power and then want to plug in 2 acoustic, 1 regular mic no power and a stomp box?
Hi Matt. On the recall scene section, I noticed the level values change from scene 1 to scene 3 but only saw the led markings change, not the sliders.. are these motorized and shouldn’t they change to same level the led states are showing?
Nop. Not motorized. that led indication means your previous slider was there., so that u can re adjust your level
Are the the individual head phone outs true stereo trs (with panning etc) or just mono? im sorta looking for a mixer where i can send certain things to a stereo looper but i dont wanna send all the channels going to the master to it etc.
Can it work better for a recording studio ?
Yeesh I need this
What kind of gear are you doing to connect to it?
@@MatthewStratton MPC Live, Octatrack Mk2, Op-Z, Microfreak, Native Instruments Mac. (Maybe a Zynthian, but I really want a Mod Duo X)
Mathew is there a way to hook up the Mpc X to the Akai Force to work on a song with them both together. I know about Ableton Link. But can they both be linked together.
