  • After years of work on restoring my Volvo 850 and rebuilding a junkyard T5 engine, I finally got around to swapping the old for the new!
In this vid I'm showing a timelapse of the engine swap, followed by video footage of starting it for the first time. As I used an aftermarket turbocharger, it has no exhaust yet, so it sounds a bit like a T5 tractor.
Timelapse was recorded with a Contour HD.

LOVE THAT 5-CYLINDER GROWL!!!! Huge congratulations. Funny that this was posted on America's "Groundhog Day" which has come to mean a day on which you seem trapped doing the same thing over and over - forever. I bet there were many of those during a multi-year restoration. My 1994 850 with the B234T5 (Benzene (Swedish for petrol/gasoline), 2.3 liter, 4-valve per cylinder, Turbocharged, 5-cylinder) motor only has 110,000 original miles, so it should be fine after its next timing belt and water pump replacement. Wife hates my St. Bridget - Patroness of Sweden, but I can't seem to let her go. Every time I start the 5-cylinder and hear the growl, I smile. When I shut down the engine, I let it idle about 30 seconds first to let cooler oil move into the turbocharger - old trick for turbochargers. Volvo learned a lot about turbochargers when the passenger car and commercial truck divisions were fully one company, since practically every tractor trailer seems to have a turbocharged diesel engine. So much of my 850 Wagen/Estate reminds me of a truck - loud clack of the door locks, difference in the ride between empty and loaded, the steel that was verified as four times the minimum required strength for the passenger cage, and so on. Just an amazing piece of durable engineering.

I'm "just" having the 144hp version, but I love that thing. I'll never want another car. Just a Turbo! :D
    Drive safely!

I'd like to know how long it took you to do it, so it'll give me an idea. I'm planning on doing a similar project but in a shorter time allotted. (A week)

Keiko FX Designs Have you done that? I’m planning to swap my b5252fs to b5234T, what differences are between equipment of these engines besides gearbox, ECU, wires? Are the engine fixes the same?

Alvast dank!

In total several years, but that was mostly the rebuilding of the block itself. This video shows footage spread across ~2 months, working on- and off.
