For those of you who thinks Mi5 is a copy of samsung galaxy s5, I'm not sure where u get that idea from. Xiaomi is the first company incorporate curved glass back design in a phone, the Mi Note. Samsung galaxy note 5 came later. Mi5 takes inspiration from Mi note, I would say it's a brilliant copy. Dare you compare with S7? Pay double the price.

This was my second android phone. Had it imported from China (Xiaomi wasn't officially launched in our country yet). Flashed the global build and it was a beast. Miss the days of small, portable phones.
I often give reviewers shit for their reviews when all they do is name off the specs and show off the phone. That's not the case with this guy. Very well done and informative review, sir 👌
To assist, this is an amazing phone, I grey imported a 64gb one from China to the UK. You do have to flash and get rid of the reseller rom which restricts the full potential of this amazing bit of kit. My unlock was granted within 2 days. However as in my case overseas numbers do not always receive the unlock sms. So check online each day and on day 2 there was a note on my account to say my phone could be unlocked. That process is quick and simple and wow what a difference. Features like Xiaomi find my phone still work on a unlocked phone but not as fast as Google device manager. A great phone at over half the price of a Samsung or Apple, oh dear I have become a Xiaomi fan boy

Considering buying this phone, specifically the chinese version as its cheaper and is more available in the black colour. As a UK resident, would there be any problems with using the chinese version? Is english available as a language upon setup? Sorry for my lack of knowledge, never bought a phone from a chinese company nor a chinese phone

after you lock the phone,do you need to press the home button to unlock with your fingerprint or do you only need to touch it?
does it's fingerprint sesor unlock phone directory like 1+2? or need to wake up phone first?
Anything beyond 720p in a 5.15" screen (i.e. ~267ppi) is unnoticeable. The same pixel density (~267 ppi) is offered in the iPads and people are completely satisfied with that. Also, phones with screen larger than 5.2", with a lower screen-to-body ratio become a nuisance to use for longer or prolonged periods.
Mobile phones don't at all need a display sharper than FHD, even 720p is fine, as the differences between them are hardly noticeable. Also, phones need to be lightweight and fully operational with one-hand usage.
This device is priced at about half the price of any other flagship smartphone, also it comes with high quality hardware and the camera is also good enough, considering its price. Build quality is premium and definitely worth considering when you are about to buy any device at its price.
Abhinav Tiwari Wrong. I suggest you compare a phone with 720p vs a phone with 1080p or more side by side. You'll definitely notice some of me differences. I had an Xperia Z3 and then I bought a Z5 and before selling my Z3 I noticed how sharper and brighter the Z5's screen was.

That difference is so small that it doesn't makes any sense to go for a FHD screen if your budget is limited. I support having a FHD display, but 2K and 4K are utterly useless unless you have videos of such size and quality.
Also, 720p is far more common and handy than a 1080p video, owing to its acceptable quality and lower size. That is why, I said that having a 720p is just as fine as a 1080p display.
Practically speaking, 720p video on a 1080p display is just as good as 720p video on a 720p screen. Therefore, if any person is not exclusively interested in having 1080p video for movie watching or music videos and he doesn't has an internet connection that can seamlessly buffer FHD videos, 1080p is purely optional.
My opinion was based on the thought that what you need practically in your hands. FHD display can be had, but 2K and 4K are utterly useless in a small screen like a mobile phone's.
FYI: I use the Samsung Galaxy A7, which does have a FHD screen.
720 looks good enough to most people, 1080 is great. A 2k or 4k display could very likely compromise the performance to a level where it outweighs any possible advantage over 1080. I was strongly against the ultra-high res mobile screens and called them gimmicks... Until VR entered the scene. You'll get a better quality picture from a 2k or 4k screen than 1080 when you magnify the screen with a VR headset. But such a high density screen would affect the performance of some games - so you'd have to compromise performance for speed.

Top 5 haha yeah ik man. But tell me what's really different between the s7, g5, HTC 10 & even the mi5 (all SD 820 run devices) , you can add 6P to the mix. Nothing really for a normal smart phone user. You've got to produce an all-round device these days (crispy display, snappy camera & lag free device ) else you'd be thrown out of the competition (last year's M9 is a classic example). From then on, it comes to personal preference.

No incoming calls on Mi5 if the preferred Network Mode set to LTE on Airtel 4G. It works when set to 3G though. Did this work for you in your tests ?

Wait I have a question (or two.) hspa+ is 4G right? But not 4G LTE, correct? do if I have a pay as you go phone with no data, only calling/texting that normally gets LTE, and I switch over to this one, would there be a noticeable difference between 4G (hspa+) and 4G LTE? Again, I don't use data, just talking and texting. Any help would be appreciated :)

Nope actually happens, only from dodgy 3rd party resellers. If you somehow can get it from an official Xiaomi seller you're all good tho. Even if you get the hacked ROM, its still possible to flash the official ROMs without unlocking the bootloader.
+Rene277! no.. it's possible to flash the official global ROM on Mi4. but I tried to do it on Mi5, and it doesn't work. you need to unlock the bootloader to flash a new ROM ( it's not a complicated process though). but you're right.. if you don't buy from some shady distributor, the device won't be preloaded with malware, even if it's a hacked Chinese ROM (the seller installing google without unlocking the bootloader. that's why they hacked it)
Liongky Nugraha Ahh my Mi5 was flashed with a hacked ROM but I managed to flash an official ROM via MiPC Suite with a locked bootloader. The MiPC suite method is a bit dodgy and only happens to work for like 50% of people who try it.
But yeah unlocking the bootloader is the safest way to do it, and you can lock it afterwards so its all good

Ah theres no video tutorial on it or anything, I just read a lot of stuff on MIUI forums. But basically heres what you do
1. Install and download MiPC Suite on your PC
2. Boot phone into recovery mode and plug it into your PC
3. MiPC Suite should detect your phone and ask to update to the latest ROM
4. Click yes and allow PC Suite to flash the latest ROM
But I did this method around like 2 months ago so theres a chance it might not work, a lot of people have reported it doesnt work for their Mi5 and some have reported its worked fine. So take it with a grain of salt, but its worth trying if you have no other options

Yep. It's as good as it looks if not better, trust me.
hows the battery life and speaker quality? and doesn't it suck that it can't receive LTE?
Battery is noticeably over avarage. You can get over a day with intense use or up to 2 days with moderate use. Speaker quality is quite decent, on par with the best flagships without a stereo speaker (s7 for example) but maybe just a tiny bit lower in volume, and it distorts a bit at max volume but to be honest I almost never need to go up to such extents. I get LTE almost everywhere but I live in europe, not sure if it's the same in the US. And, the data antennas are extremely good, unlike the wifi antena wich is a bit underwhelming but nothing to worry about unless you really need that max range wifi to use it in your room or something like that.

Hard to find one nowadays since all 5-5.2 inch phones have QHD displays and that eats up a lot of power. This would be a top choice. Although I did just now know that Mi5s is coming up and I'll watch out for that. Thanks again.
