I love this knife. I picked one up recently, and attached a Condor Knife and Tool pocket pike fishing kit to the sheath. I placed several feet of fishing line and sinkers in the handle, as well as waterproof matches in the Pocket Pike sheath and a firestriking strip from the box of matches. I love the way the knife feels in my hand, and the weight and balance. I always wanted one of the TOPS versions of it years ago, and regretted never having purchased one. So glad to see this back on the market. With the modifications I've made I believe this to be a great overall survival knife, especially for the price.
Another Awesome video!!! The Esee Laser Strike was my first Esee purchase, and I Love it!!! Also added the Esee Altoid survival kit attached to the knife with the Esee survival pouch. I have since also picked up the Esee Izula 2 with the micarta scales set up on a Bladetech tek loc for scout carry. Many more to come.
I love lasers and especially when they strike things!
After watching this review and others on this knife I decided to buy it. The knife is everything I wanted. I have never had a knife feel better in-hand. Nice balance, weight, and feel. Great quality, and the thing is shaving sharp. Thank you for the solid review it helped a lot!
Awesome! I am glad the video helped your purchasing choice. That is the whole reason GT exists. Enjoy your new blade!
Just ordered me one of these! Can't wait to get it! My first ESEE, I've always wanted one badly.
Hangtown Gunner How do you like it?
Subscribed and watching many of your knife vids right now. Your name implies prepper gear to me ("tactical") but I just scrolled your uploads and notice you are reviewing many things I will be using and either need to purchase or possibly rethink my original purchases. Thank you for the very informative vids so far and for your comparisons within your vids i.e. 'ESEE 4 - I'd go with xyz instead due to this feature or that feature'. It helps someone like me a lot, who is looking for just an overall camping knife but doesn't know enough about knives to know the pluses and minuses to look for when selecting. I see you even have a dog pack review which I will be watching later since I've decided to take my pup from car camping into backpacking this coming summer. I may need a little more than proper gear to pull that off though, considering my 100# pansy-in-wolf's-clothing really likes her bed and there's no room for that in my pack. lol
Thanks for this great review, I've been going back & forth between this & the Esee 6, think I'm going to get this one 1st & wait on the 6 until later.
Right on!
Excellent, thank you very much for this review. I shall be ordering one for my Birthday in February. Warm regards, DP.
Great vid! One of my favorite knives second to my BK-16. Mabuhay!
Thank you for this video. I added a L.S. to my collection and it is one of my favorites. For me, weight and practicality are my biggest considerations since I use these combined during camping and hiking activities. I have an Esee 3; Esee 4; Esee 6; and a TOPS B.O.B...but prefer my L.S.
Great reviews. Many thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
The Esee and Rat videos are great!! Well done!
Thanks so much for the support!
Did you or could you do a direct comparison video between this knife and the TOPS BOB? I know you've done a video on the BOB as well, but a comparison/epic battle between these two fierce competitors would be awesome!
Nice point about the depth of the index finger secondary choil with heavy gloves.
Cliff Stamp Glad to help!
Great video as usual. As far as the laser strike being a TOPS design I believe it was a Jeff Randall (ESEE cofounder) design produced by TOPS before they went to Ontario knife company to produce their designs (excluding the LS) and was re introduced sometime after production by Rowen began.
That is what I have discovered as well.
steeltrident That was exactly what I was going to add. Randall has no problems with TOPS' reintroduction in the Black Star -- he actually wrote a comment to that effect in one of the forums.
Ditto on the great video, you do really well with conveying exactly the information I'm looking for & then some. I just wish you wouldn't stab live trees. I unsubscribed to you before over exactly that issue, thought I'd subscribe again as I started watching this video -- & there it was, more tree torture. Resubscribed & re-unsubscribed with one video.
@@mplsatty Shame you can't trust his judgement on discerning wether there is a surplus of over grown trees as they are a very reliable resource. We grow and replant thousand on my ranch and we even grow sustainable hardwoods for the musical instrument market. Take your unjustified animus and go to Cali or Idaho where there is so much under management that millions of acres of timber burn due to not thinning. Learn facts.
@@msb2948 Sorry, it took some time, but I'm finally learning facts. I have so much unjustified animus. I'll get back to you again soon, headed to Idaho & California now...
Micarta soaks up blood kids-- not sanitary for cook work. He also fails to mention that the spine is not 90 degrees --which does disservice to the goodies in the handle.
Aaron! Love your channel still coke back to your old vids for data. I know you love the field buddy these days. But I’m wondering if you’d compare this, that field buddy, and the esee 4hm or tops Bob for example with your updated experience from the years. Cheers my friend!
how would you compare it to the survive gso 4.1 and 5.1?
Another great review!
I know in your review of the BOB, you said you preferred it personally over the Esee LS, but I would LOVE to see the two in a side-by-side performance comparison and I've been waiting for it for quite a while now. I'm currently beating the crap out of myself trying to decide between the two, weighing different pros and cons of each knife, and the trade-offs are just impossible to decipher between. If you can do that, you'd definitely be my #1 gear review guy!lol Thanks for the awesome reviews aside from that; imo you give a pretty good comprehensive and insightful view on the various p.o.u.'s of your gear. Keep it up, guy!
Thanks Matt, I no longer own the Laser-Strike. The BOB is the one I would recommend getting first, then get the laser-strike if you are not blown away with the BOB.
That sucks. I've actually been looking at different options of inhibiting rust on the 1095 like a forced patina or maybe some kind of clear duracoat, because one of the turn-offs of the BOB for me is the risk of rust; even though it looks cool and cuts smoother, the laser strike would require less maintenance. And the sheath of the LS has that awesome lock feature. How's your B.O.B holding up as far as corrosion, and what made you get rid of the L.S.? BTW sorry for the lengthy, tedious posts & questions.lol
It is doing well and if you keep it oiled you don't have to worried about it.
Right on, what are you using? You think rem oil would suffice?
I use a moist paper towel with vegetable oil. But any oil will do!
I gottq say i did a lot of research on knives. I quickly fell for ESEE... Simple. Easy. Utility. Nimble to use as a camp knife. Wont process game well but thats what the scalpel knives are for!
I should also add that you c n make a wedge from a piece of wood and use it for bigger stuff
what would you recommend more for the military esee LS or esee 6
I was torn between this & TOPS Baja 4.5. but I'm getting the Baja 4.5.
How do you feel this knife compares to the CM6 as a tactical knife.
Thanx for the review, Aaron! I got one question, maybe you could help me out:
Just received my new laser strike (ordered it based on your review). On one side there is just a hair of a
gap visible between the scales and the tang (really minor, but
noticeable compared to the other side). Is this normal with this knive,
maybe cause there are no liners, or could this be an issue (since water
might get into the recess inside the handle)?
I´d really appreciate your help
For some reason, the LS has that slight gap, mine has the same but I've had mine for 5 years with no problem with rust under the scales. I recently removed the coating from the blade only so now it requires a little more care.
Cool video
I'm looking for a knife that is especially suited to slicing and carving, with a flat or high flat grind and a very strong, safe finger choil. I've already got the king of choppers OKC SP53. I don't need anything for batoning, just fine detail work. Got any recommendations? I was thinking maybe the Laser Strike or maybe the Esee 3. Certain Schrades have a good, safe finger choil, but none of them have that slicing flat grind... Any thoughts?
Mad Max , I'd check out the TOPS Baja 4.5. Or Mora knives are good slicers, but they only come in scandi grinds (that I know of) and I'm not sure if any of them have finger coils.
Mad Max just get a Mora Number 1! its thin, has a scandi grind and can get either a stainless or carbon steel blade.
I never had an ESEE, but I really like the looks of them. Micarta scales look awesome and are super comfortable but what I dont like of them is that they get dark when you spill oil on it.
I noticed that too, so I actually rubbed a bit of oil, not a lot, on the handle scales intentionally to darken it just a little, and now I don't really have to worry about drops of oil, and it gives it a more used look, which I like
IDEA: Don't spill oil on it.
Feel free to send one down here to aus for a test and review
Great video this channel is my go to channel for all of my wilderness needs. You said in a previous comment that the Laser Strike and the 6 was your two favorite Esee knives. I'm stuck between the laser strike and the 6 and I don't know which one I should get? Could you help me with this.
-Jake
Jake St. Amand ESEE6 all the way. knifeworks.com for $113 last I checked. It will do a lot more for you.
gideonstactical thank you for the help
gideonstactical - Why? Not to split hairs or be terse, but these are two different knives. I would call the LS an EDC and the 6 a larger camping /survival knife. A better comparison would be the ESEE 5 or the RAT-5 for the LS. And the RAT-7 vs the ESEE 6.
I currently have been using the BOB, but have been considering getting this one over the BOB, any recommendations/thoughts?
The Laser Strike is a great blade, but I use my BOB constantly and like the handle better.
Will a Large TEK-LOK work on the ESEE Laser Strike sheath?
No it will not line up with me.
For bushcraft and in the woods use would you then normally use the tops Bob over the laser strike?
Bob
OK thanks for letting me know both of them are great and I will get one of them in probably a month most likely the Bob.
Bob looks to be $40 more
ESEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Weight aside. If you had to choose between this and the 5, which way would you go?
Laser strike and the ESEE6 are me two favorite ESEE Knives
Should i get the the ESEE Laser Strike or the Becker BK 7? For a survival knife.
The BK7 will chop and baton better, but the ESEE will cut and carve a lot better. A happy medium in size and capabilities would be the ESEE6.
gideonstactical Thanks, so are you saying for a survival knife you would choose the ESEE 6 over the BK 7 And Laser Strike?
Yes if you are looking for one knife to do it all.
Esee 5. That's it
I cant' decide on either to get the Ontario blackbird or the Esee laser strike.
Which one should I get ?
USArmyRangers18 After using both extensively I like the SK-5 more.
HOOOAH brother! Ontario SK5 will be a better option for you, especially since it is made out of 154 CM, it will be rust resistant a lot better.
How can I win an esee laser strike. Looks like exactly what I am after. Would be perfect down here in australia
It is a nice blade!
Is it suitable to skin a deer with the laser strike?
I like mine
Should i get Large molly locks for the ESEE Laser strike or small?
great review
Thanks!
Is it a scandi grind? Or a drop point?
It is a spear point with a saber grind.
I thought Esee 4 has a drop point ?!
why not chop with the baton? I think it would burn less calories
I didn't say anything, should have watched till the end first
it all depends on your preferance my brother and i are making our Ls purchase sept 2015 i know thiss vid is two years old but who cares
whats the little notch for?
Which notch?
@@gideonstactical - there is a small notch just in front of the finger choil
i hate the name of this knife but other than that its a pretty decent knife (i still like the fieldcraft knife more)
I am really looking forward to the BOB, but I really do dig this Laser Strike.
I don't like the handle and the choil on this one.. I believe a choil on mid to small knife like this is not needed.
I prefer my esee cm6 but even the cm6 isn't perfect the handle is too thin..
Esee friend here but i can't find one of their products to be 100% good...
3:18 is that an elk?
The Scrubs Pub Thanks for the review btw, it helped me decide what knife i choose.
The Scrubs Pub chose* oh man im not here today.
You didnt open it!
Your friend is hilarious
Pronounced HOONGLAS!
JGBLADES that explains why people look at me weird when I pronounce it jungle ass..
Why Chop with a knife when you can chop with an axe I can’t expect a knife to do what a axe is made to do
Why bring an axe on a long hike when you have a good knife? 😂
@@Th3Acc0mplice have you ever felled a 2 or 3 ft diameter tree with a knife if so I’d like to have one of those knives
It's not titled Esee Axe review. Just a guy reviewing a knife doing knife stuff.
Hate battoning
Esee 5 all the way. Be a man and don't complain about the weight! lol
That's not the choil. You're using that word wrong.
I got a ESEE ls it sucks
what are the issues?
I got a turtle, and it's slow.
I have several ESEE knives.
Love em and hate em. Won;t buy another one.
Was just up in the Sierra's and it rained like crazy. I had to use my knife in the rain. I don;t carry oil on hte trail... maybe I should.. but really? Both my E3 and laser Strikes rusteed like crazy. Fist chance I got I oiled and shrpened but they are now stained. I'm going Bark River or F1.... never an ESEE again. They do not work in a real world outdoor environment. I feel ripped off.
I agree. I have several as well, and I like the design of them all, but I am not sold on their reliability with rust. I actually baby ESEE'S more than my BARK RIVER"S, which are better looking. But I have never had any problems with my BARK RIVER'S and their customer service. They really stand behind their product. I have to say though, I have not have to use the warranty on the ESEE yet.
Are you stupid? It's made from high carbon steel it needs oiling and care. That's like saying that you won't buy a car because you have to change the oil. It's a fact of life that steel rusts, it's not because the blade is low quality.
+Tristan K You sir- are a FUCKING GENIOUS! Not!
They rusted through the coating? I don't understand. I used a carbon steel knife 4 years in Army with no coating, snow, humid environment, and desert. Still have it today with no rust.
"SHUTUP!!!"
ESEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
They are great!
