I really hope you will react to TWO of her greatest LIVE performances EVER: 1) You are My Friend/What a Friend at the Essence Awards (I think year 2000) and one rarely reacted to at all that shows a more classical side: "If You Love Me Hymne a' l'amoure! Truly these are 2 of her very best live performances ever!

The back story to this performance was Coretta Scott King asked Patti LaBelle to sing this song when Martin Luther Kings day was made a national holiday. Sonit was highly emotional and historic moment.

I read from a comment that the date when Patti sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" as tribute for MLK's celebration was on 1986. He said that he watched Patti sing this on his TV when he was in college. He also said that it was like a spiritual awakening for him 🤭 and that he wanted to crawl into the TV to see the perfomance live.
I can see how that could happen...literally on almost every song of hers. She can make a song sound like a spiritual awakening, even if it isn't a religious song!
After that high note she turned into a bird 😂 but yeah she is just amazing ❤

Everyone to their own but I think this song, to my ear anyway, required a little finesse without the all the vocal gymnastics. Eva Cassidy reinvented this song to perfection and it was magical.
Lucy Thomas covered this song as a tribute to the late Eva and it was a master class in the story telling of the song. Bob, give Lucy a chance, you wont be disappointed.
But that's Patti. I get what you're saying though. Hard to compare anyone to Lucy's or Eva's versions. Those are pretty high bars. I really did enjoy this version as well. Just different.
