Very interesting story behind this song. During the Vietnam war, a Private First Class was cut off from his patrol and was left to spend the rest of the night by himself in the jungle. A big marine who called himself Camouflage appeared through the foliage and helped the young PFC make it back to the nearest US base. They had to engage the enemy through the jungle just the 2 of them, and the PFC noted that this man Camouflage was apparently able to take bullets without harm, on a super human level. Once they made it back safely, Camouflage disappeared and the young marine who asked about for him was told, that Camouflage had been on his death bed for a week, and said that before he died he wanted to help a young marine. I'm not superstitious in any way, but it's a really cool story.
According to the original song (this is a cover of a Stanley Ridgeway song btw) Camoflague could also apparently pull a tree out of the ground and swing it at the Vietcong. The original is really good too
Not gonna lie, I had a bit of tears in me eyes at the part of "So here, take his dog tag, son. I know he'd want you to have it now", and then I spent the next 4 hours playing Sniper Elite
In the original Camouflage picks a tree up and starts whacking the VC's to death with it, I think we are to understand that the spirit of camouflage actually did come back as a wraith and fought along our unnamed Pfc.
you do realize this song is about the USMC's most failed war, Nam. where the US was basically chased out due to holy shit the Vietnamese really REALLY know their territory and that it was a proxy war with Russia. also the video for some reason has WW2 footage, with more British/Canadian forces and the Red army.
Reminds me of another story from WWII, actually. The British laid a minefield in the deserts near El Alamein, but before they could mark the safe passage through, they came under fire from the enemy. To their shock, before they could return to do the job, they could see a lorry drive into the minefield. Expecting it would blow up, they held their breath, but instead it started turning left and right seemingly at random. When the lorry arrived, they asked the driver how he knew the right way through. "I didn't," he answered, "a young Leftenant has shown me the way." Upon which, a medic took him to a corpse of a Leftenant, dead for a few days. When the driver saw the dead man and heard he's been dead for days, he suddenly went pale, confirmed it was indeed THE Leftenant, unloaded his cargo and disappeared, never to be seen by that unit again...
propyne Joke's on you, the British use Leftenant, as improper as spelling as it is. It's origin stems from the phonetic pronunciation (the British pronounce it /lefˈten.ənt/). Effectively it's the same word as the American Lieutenant, but adapted within the language. Such happenings are recognized as occasional events in the development of a language by any linguist worth his salt.
Easily my favorite song by them. That said it sorta reminds me of the story of a British RAF pilot in WWII that professed to uaving seen the ghost of his best friend who had been killed two days before in a dogfight over the Pacific, and came to tell him of his death. Less than an hour after the ghost appeared, another soldier broke to the RAF pilot news of his friends death, to which he replied "i know."
Just a heads up, the lyrics in the description are for the original song. These are the Sabaton lyrics. I was a P.F.C. on a search patrol, huntin' Charlie down It was the jungle wars of '65 My weapon jammed and I got stuck way out and all alone And I could hear the enemy movin' in close outside Just then I heard a twig snap and I grabbed my empty gun And I dug in scared while I counted down my fate And then a big marine, with a pair of friendly eyes Appeared there at my shoulder and said "Wait." If Charlie wants to tangle now, he'll have two to dodge" I said, "Well, thanks a lot!" I told him my name and asked him his And he said "The boys just call me Camouflage" Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage Things are never quite the way they seem Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage I was awfully glad to see this big Marine Well, we fought all night, side by side, we took our battle stance And I wondered how the bullets missed this man 'Cause they seemed to go right through him just as if he wasn't there And in the mornin' we both took a chance and ran And it was near the riverbank when the ambush came And I thought it was the end, and we were had Then a bullet with my name on it came buzzin' through a bush And that big Marine, he just swat it with his hand Just like it was a fly... Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage Things are never quite the way they seem Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage I was awfully glad to see this big marine When he led me outta danger I saw my camp and waved goodbye He just winked at me from the jungle and then was gone When I got back to my H.Q., I told 'em about my night And the battle I'd spent with a big Marine named Camouflage When I said his name, the soldier gulped, and a medic took my arm And led me to a green tent on the right He said "You may be tellin' the true, boy, but this here is Camouflage And he's been right here since he passed away last night But before he went, he said Semper Fi, and said his only wish Was to save a young Marine caught in a barrage So here, take his dog tag, son, I know he'd want you to have it now" Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage Things are never quite the way they seem Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage I was awfully glad to see this big marine
XD I feel ya I suck at grammar but yeah I"ll watch like a nightcore of my favorite sabaton song and decide to scroll down like within the first like 5 comments one is bound to be something derogatory.
People hate it because 90% of nightcore is very lazy sped up and high pitch version of normal songs. There's a very few songs that sound better in the nightcore versions.

3:03 on the second part of the chorus, instead of 'I was awfully glad to see this big marine' its 'this was an awfully big marine'. Just putting it out there for you mate :)
Watching the section of the video where they show the naval battles gives me chills, the guys flying in that rain of bullets ... I do not even want to imagine the kind of terror that these men surpassed.
actually i absolutely love Sabaton and would never say a bad word against them but i remember the original from when it was released and i do think the original is the better version, i like this cover but it's not as good as the original
It's curious to see how some songs just get random WWII footage because people don't actually look at the lyrics, or just don't care about the context and want some war footage cos' its sabaton

That british infantry section at 1:50. You can literally see the guy step on the mine or take a direct mortar hit. You can see his bits flying while his friends seek shelter. That is fucking rough.
I swear, Sabaton community and fans make their songs so much better with videos like this.
especially when the song is about the Vietnam War and not WW2. but the footage in the video is still cool
knodden454 Works with WW2 too i guess...
Hahah do jaja ime !
Stevan Popovic Хвала ;)
Oh so it is Vietnam. Had me confused with videos shown here and what the song said It was "the jungle wars of '65"
10/10 Will attack Normandy during Vietnam war again
Hate it when guderian gets panzer II's in my ardennes

The USMC: so badass, even their ghosts can wreck the enemy's shit.
Listen again. The ghost never did active damage.
I bet that PFC was so tired that he had started to hallucinate

TheKawboo the US did poorly because it was fighting a conventional war against an unconventional foe kind of a learning point in US history XD

I was a P.F.C. on a search patrol, huntin' Charlie down
It was the jungle wars of '65
My weapon jammed and I got stuck way out and all alone
And I could hear the enemy movin' in close outside
Just then I heard a twig snap and I grabbed my empty gun
And I dug in scared while I counted down my fate
And then a big marine, with a pair of friendly eyes

If Charlie wants to tangle now, he'll have two to dodge"
I said, "Well, thanks a lot!" I told him my name and asked him his
And he said "The boys just call me Camouflage"
Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage
Things are never quite the way they seem
Woah-oh-oh-oh, Camouflage

Well, we fought all night, side by side, we took our battle stance
And I wondered how the bullets missed this man
'Cause they seemed to go right through him just as if he wasn't there

And the battle I'd spent with a big Marine named Camouflage
When I said his name, the soldier gulped, and a medic took my arm
And led me to a green tent on the right
He said "You may be tellin' the true, boy, but this here is Camouflage
And he's been right here since he passed away last night
But before he went, he said Semper Fi, and said his only wish
Was to save a young Marine caught in a barrage

for your information you can see in the video german wehrmacht soldiers
Wouldn't 'Nam have made a better war to put video to the song? You know- the war it's about?
Good montage, though.

Didn't expect anyone to remember Stan Ridgway and now there's a metal cover.. +1 for sabaton!
This is what I think when I find a ghillie suit piece in unturned.
WHOA-OH-OH-OH CAMOUFLAGE
You put the wrong war on video dude.
Don't you just hate it when you accidentally mix up WWII and the Vietnam War.
It's curious to see how some songs just get random WWII footage because people don't actually look at the lyrics, or just don't care about the context and want some war footage cos' its sabaton

probably cause vietnam war is a really big shame for the us army
That is a great selection of clips you've got! Great job :P
