I wanna start by saying: I hope her daughter who escaped is able to heal and live a full and healthy life after what she was forced to live through. Such a brave young woman to walk all that way not only pregnant at 15 but widowed, to THEN to turn her own mother in. The strength in convictions and desire to be HOME in America, I wish our own daughters can learn and find the same strength as she has!
The ones with a high intelligence are often those most easily convinced to join a cult or become political/religious extremists. I've seen it happen with my own eyes, it's heart wrenching to see people you know and love change overnight! Their are MANY factors into why it happens to some and not others but often its an untreated or even an undiagnosed emotional/mental health issue. If we could all as a society destigmatize seeing a therapist/psychiatrist maybe more people would be willing to seek out mental health therapies. If not for their own quality of life but for those around them not knowing what to donor how to help other than "just be there for support".

The daughter who was 18 could be stuck in a camp somewhere in Syria. To assume she got back onto American soil is only an assumption. Not many countries are taking back even children of those who were taken into the war zone. They’ve been stuck in camps there for years. There’s a lot of Australian children who have had children themselves, married off at 13/14 even and now have children are are still stuck in isis camps.

I do not think that there is a clear medical explanation as to why someone would become so radicalized as to seek to kill anyone, let alone civilians. Now, I do not know how this woman got involved in Islam in Kansas in the first place, much less the far more radicalized sect that uses religion as a vehicle to justify terrorism. However, I do know that for such a sparsely populated state, I'm shocked at the number of true narcissists I encounter there.
Yes, I have met some truly good decent human beings in Kansas, but the narcissists are very close to outnumbering them, and that frightens me.
Most of the narcissists I've encountered are in Wichita now, but many of these were raised just outside of Wichita. Even more frightening still, is how seemingly *normative* these narcissists appear, at first.
CAVEAT: I would need much more of this women's history to confirm this, as there is one more possibility. It is possible that she became a victim of Domestic Violence, and was terrorized by her husband, which caused a trauma-bond to develop after the severe psychological, physical, and sexual abuse she would have endured (most domestic abusers do this to their partner, sadly), and that trauma bonding causes a syndrome to develop that is closely related to Stockholm Syndrome, but may also have elements of Narcissistic Abuse Syndrome, as well. The men who do this to their partner, married or not, create so much terror for the women they hold captive that the woman's brain protects itself by causing this horrible trauma-bond to be created as a survival mechanism to a very destructively toxic abuser (as terrorists of are, be they domestic or international).
However, we would need the history of the first five years of her childhood and upbringing, along with the history of her behavior since then, to see which may be true.
Her friends' description sounds highly subjective, and very misguided, even if she is well-intended. We have to ask ourselves, if this "friend" truly is a friend, and her intent was pure in interviewing with Ashleigh Banfield, why didn't she step in many years ago to advocate for this 15 year old girl who had been married off, raped, forced to go to another country, and the left to find her own was back to the US???? Ask yourself this, if one of your friends was going off into some kind of extreme religious thinking, wouldn't you call someone to try and help those children? I know I sure would. I'm not sure this woman answering questions here is what I would call an actual "friend". She sounds like a distant acquaintance, at best?
