I had a therapist insist that my only problem was cptsd and it wasn't until I reached out to a specialist psychiatrist that I was finally diagnosed with Autism and adhd too. The original therapist always shot down my feeling about the latter, turns out he was a trauma specialist and was trying to fit me squarely into that specialty.

I think it is fair to say that, for me, being autistic is why I was abused as a child and teen. So the PTSD was basically just a result of the treatment I got for being autistic. I really had a hard time understanding that. I'm not playing the victim I'm just not easy to deal with because I'm autistic and everyone thinks I'm not.

    • @laurenhebert4245

Same. I just commented this. We are 1) more prone to traumatization due to hypersensitivity and 2) more prone to being abused due to being difficult as children and often undiagnosed. So our parents.. likely also audhd, don’t know how to work with us instead of against, and think we are just being difficult on purpose and need to be corrected, repeatedly. As they likely were by their parents and then there’s the age-old false dichotomy that “That’s how my folks did it and worked on me (it didn’t) so that’s how I raise my children!”

I’ve been brushing off my intuition that I’m autistic because it’s SO HARD to find resources + external support. Mostly by gaslighting myself bc I have CPTSD + ADHD- and those could affect certain characteristics. But the most damning information is that my twin brother was diagnosed as autistic as a child, and my dad exhibits A LOT of autistic + ADHD traits as well ☠️

It’s my belief that most autistic individuals have PTSD as a result of the hypersensitivity to everything around us from the moment we are born. I think that’s why they are so hard to distinguish and differentiate. The fact that we are so sensitive makes us extra vulnerable/susceptible to trauma, where things that are not typically even traumatizing for NT people are actually traumatizing to us.

    • @laurenhebert4245
      @laurenhebert4245 Před 8 měsíci +7

Additionally, our undiagnosed ADHD/autistic parents, who struggle blindly with their own sensitivity and tendency toward meltdowns, don’t know how to handle us who also have those same issues, and so they end up lashing out and creating more opportunities for traumatization. We are challenging as children, we are difficult and different and they aren’t given a handbook and even if we are diagnosed as children, most doctors/therapists only NOW barely know what the right thing to do is.

The way I think of men is so weird to other people, but as a person raised by a Malignant Narcissist father and having so much narcissism in my extended family-to say I struggled would be an understatement. I'm much better now. But as an African American woman I rarely feel safe. I hate being followed, stared at, fetishized and objectified the most. I saw so much of myself in your experiences. PTSD completely changed my life and was the reason I started looking into autism because my all my autistic traits suddenly maxed and I started getting ticks and a very high startle reflex. Before, I would say I was just managing with life. I had a job that made me feel stable, saw friends and pursued my hobbies. Suddenly all that just just flipped upside down and I had to make major life changes which I also find very difficult. It's been a year since and I'm starting to feel like I can never go back to the person I was.
The good news is, I'm learning now that I have to make accommodations for myself and set boundaries so I feel grateful, in a way, that you can get some good from the worst in life.

I can relate to this. Two years ago, a friend of mine passed, and I decided that I needed to work through my own trauma so that I didn’t end up the same way. The more I worked through it, the more I realized that there was still a lot of unexplained anxiety that didn’t have anything to do with trauma. I haven’t been diagnosed yet, but ever since I became open to the fact that I may be autistic, everything’s really clicked into place. I’m 33 now. The trauma and the CPTSD really stood in the way of me even finding out how I even work or think outside of trauma.

Now im 30 i cant let the past go and the fact i lost my entire life from 0-26 until i met a friend in rehab who got me into working out. Still got no hope of getting a actual social life thats consistent, not just meeting people once a month or so.
I cant start convesations with women, and cant have friendships because im too literal, too cringe and severely autistic and thats grown inward and become worse because i had no social interactions growing up. Thank you so much for this video. I've been contemplating the possibility of me being autistic for....I don't know, 5 or 6 years? I'm also suspecting that I have ADHD. I originally was treated for depression + anxiety, but it just felt wrong to me, like another piece that I was missing. But it's been complicated with PTSD and trauma symptoms that I have. Also, my C-PTSD has caused me to blank out on a lot of my childhood memories, making me unable to do self-introspection and look for childhood neurodivergent symptoms.
Right now, I'm trying to go by the rule of "giving myself the neurodivergent resources and coping mechanisms I feel that I need until proven otherwise." And reminding myself that even if I could be wrong, I can always change my mind or go back on my word. As long as I'm not being actively disrespectful to the neurodivergent community and to not use this quasi-self-diagnosis maliciously. That conclusion came after finally finding a good therapist that did not invalidate me on my suspicions of neurodivergency.
My plan is to go through EMDR with my therapist and process trauma and then seeing how I feel. I hope it works out, regardless if I only have PTSD or have both PTSD + neurodivergent symptoms. Good luck to everyone in the comments who may resonate with the way I feel, and thank you Irene for the helpful video!

Sometimes we gaslight ourselves too. We tell ourselves something is not an issue and we are just overreacting. The guy following you at the gym, the guy following you in his car - I don’t think you over reacted at all. We are extra vulnerable to abusers and predators because we are trying so hard not to overreact. We don’t know what the appropriate response is. I put up with sexual harassment at work and didn’t report sexual assault because I don’t know how I should respond. I also had to deal with everything alone which led to trauma. Thank you for helping understand that going through so much alone since I was a child has led to trauma where other people would not label some of those experiences as traumatic. You validated my trauma and I can be kinder to myself.

  • @Edward.v.R

I find this video very relatable. But my trauma is the 'how are you even traumatized by that' type trauma. Mine is related to school and though far less severe what you said about parental treatment was relatable. In school I never knew what would anger the teacher, when I was allowed or not allowed to do something without the teacher yelling at me, etc. Their power over me without reason or clear guidelines gave me ptsd [which I've have had therapy for; it is nearly gone :] ].
What made it so horrible wasn't an active dangerous thread but my inability to understand the situation and not knowing what to do. I'd freeze. My process speed is quite low [85 on an offical IQ test I had done a few years ago], and my social skills aren't good either, including that I despise speaking and become non-verbal or [from stress] hyper-verbal very easily. And I think you are probably right that if I had been given support/an outlet for this stress I likely wouldn't have ptsd which I hadn’t thought of before./pos
I really liked this video and you made me feel safe and it was very intriguing and informative :]

Another great video, thank you ❤ a good example of what can cause PTSD can be learned from the experiences of my country, Denmark's, army. A lot more Danish soldiers who were stationed in the civil war in former Yugoslavia came back with PTSD than the soldiers posted in the war in Afganistan. The difference was that in Yugoslavia, they were not allowed to intervened, because this was not part of the mandate, so they just had to stand there and observe horrific things being done to civilians, etc. They also didn't receive any, or much, support after they came home. In Afghanistan, they were allowed to use force to either defense themselves or to intervene if they saw the taleban attacking civilians. They also had access to much more support when they got back to Denmark. Feeling paralyzed and not being able to act on something horrific by either getting away or fighting it is what's traumatic. Of course it's complex, but I've treated many men and women with ptsd, and this is one very common factor I see, whether you're a victim of rape, war, etc. I was surprised at first that being harassed systematically in school can actually do as much damage as more catastrophic events.

In my life it has been my brother who became abusive towards me, also totally unpredictable, because I was probably just the outlet for his frustration.
I´m not able to tell if autism is present in my family or if my parents and I were just extremely quiet, socially withdrawn and having very limited emotional intelligence. They showed little empathy and interest in me anyway, maybe similar to your mother. I recently discovered your channel and it has been extremely helpful to me. It's amazing how much we have in common - endometriosis, CPTSD, and a recent non-formal diagnosis of ASD from my therapist. I want to express my gratitude for creating this platform, as it has been a tremendous source of support for me. Thank you so much!

I have been traumatized for most of my life; I sense and suspect that I might have PTSD in addition to having autism. I have struggled most of my life overcoming so much trauma and emotional pain; most caused by my dad; I have extreme hatred of him. He should have never had a son to begin with. My dad never ever wanted to acknowledge or admit that what he was doing was very hurtful to me. It's because of my dad that I try to avoid other males like the plague. I feel a lot of social anxiety and depression.

I wish I can express my feelings and articulate what’s in my head and how I feel.
I don’t make sense and become super loud, animated and continue to repeat, what I just said 😢
I was diagnosed with CPTSD and ADHD I’m 43 years old and mental health, support etc just isn’t easy to get and if it’s available, I can’t afford it.

Just saying, crying on ig bc a man was following you sounds 100% valid to me... It is damn scary. WTF are they thinking.
It pisses me off that I immediately imagine them laughing about it like haha I scared her hahaha she feared for her life hahaha she probably panicked that there would be terrible pain and humiliation hahaha. Breaks my heart that it's still the norm

Hi this is lovely and very open. I’ve just been diagnosed with ADD but resonate with ASD and CPTD as well as having two children with ASD. I understand that a diagnosis for CPTD is helpful and a lot of help is available. With an ASD diagnosis do you think a diagnosis as an adult is useful and has the diagnosis helped you?

you're not wrong, men in cars are the worst ;) jk. sort of.
But yeah super relatable, I'm glad that therapists are doing more trauma-centered therapy, but NT therapists seem to have trouble looking underneath that and also like to assure potentially ND people that they're super normal actually

Oh I also have two narcissistic parents. In the same ways. But you know, the whole, mom is good, dad is bad. It was like that, and then, very early I realized she wasn’t good either.
I was so ostracized because I…couldn’t keep my mouth shut. And the siblings didn’t realize. Until twelve years later when the mom latched onto a man and ran away.
I tried to keep them apart, but the mom was so inconsiderate of the eight year old between them.
But yeah, not fun knowing everything was bad, and no one believing me and I was just there, in it, unable to do anything.

It's a very difficult task for women to get over PTSD when living in a misogynistic society means a significant number of men will keep retraumatizing us. There's a reason we have the metoo movement. We've come far, but there's a long way to go. Lots of women relate to your experiences and in never being able to put away their hypervigilance, simply because our culture doesn't allow us to. Women die every day in the situations you describe. So please don't invalidate yourself. Your reactions, your frustrations, your fears, are very much reasonable considering the insane amount of male harassment you've endured and keep enduring.

Narcissism is a personality disorder not a trait. NPD doesn’t make you “bad” or abusive. You can’t just diagnose people with NPD because they are abusive and manipulative.
