Hugh Bonneville is clearly a star and is perfect in this role but the character Robert is a likable dimwit. He loses several fortunes and would be on his way to losing another except for Mary and Tom. He is so often wrong about everything and everyone but darn, he is so great in this role. The point of this side plot was to show how Robert felt insecure about Cora's new-found independence and perceived distancing herself away from him, when in reality it was just in his head. Everyone is assailing Robert’s character, and perhaps rightfully so, but I do find one moment worth mentioning. He refuses to let the maid take the fall for an act that they had an equal part in, an act that Robert initiated and potentially pressured her into. Many men of power today, morally calloused by today’s hyper-competitive, cutthroat corporate culture, would gladly let one “insignificant” secretary, clerk or cleaner take the fall in a relationship. However he acts with integrity. It would have been even more ethically impressive if Robert was forced to choose between throwing her under the bus and publicly acknowledging his mistake, and he chose the latter.

I did, too. Robert felt out of place after the war, lost his ground, and then felt 'out' with Cora being all busy (as she later, after she got over that flu) admitted. Then there appears a warm, caring woman, with whom he simply has a 'click'- that DOES happen in life. Right when he's ready to give in to that, Bates' knock on the door makes him realize how much this will 'cost' all involved, and decides to break it off. Great storyline, extremelt well acted, and, yes, like a gentleman, he decides to help her son with his future, which, for a mom in her situation, will mean more than anything he could have given her for herself. To be fair Robert was mad because Sybil wasn't just having an affair but was willing to uproot her current life and marry a low born man which is not what they had in mind for any of their daughters. Doing so could mean possible isolation and fracturing as a family unit as well. It turned out in favour over time, but this is the 1920's not the 2000's. People need to view period dramas for the time period they are referring to. As for Robert, it was an emotional affair built on feeling neglected by his own wife, nobility and pretty much all British and western society at the time didn't work through their issues nor address them the way couples do now. He did kiss her but he immediately regretted it and cut it off before it got any further. If anything it shows restraint and that he did in fact regret his actions and made the effort to change and re-direct his love for Cora.

This storyline was needed to show that we all make mistakes! And so many make this one...quit the hypocritical comments! Robert was lonely, felt left out, in grief after the war. Suddenly someone came along who listened to him and showed him care...Classic marital life woes etc and consequences .The greatest thing about these series is that it shows human nature in all forms.

I completely hate this. During the wartime, Cora and Robert didn't have those bedtime talks of theirs anymore and they couldn't see that much of each other but that really doesn't justify Robert's behaviour. I really hated him at this part.
But maybe it was shown for another reason as well. Other than being an understanding father, I think this phase made Robert understand and support Mary more for the Mr. Pamuk incident. He said that we all make mistakes and all.
But I still don't like this. When he pulled her into the bedroom I was screaming "DO NOT DO IT YOU IDIOT!! THERE IS NO COMING BACK AFTER THIS!"

Are none of us talking about what led up to this unexpected plotline? I'm not defending married (monogamous) partners cheating on each-other, still we gotta differentiate a little bit here! 🤔 The storyline feels out of character for Robert because that IS how Robert feels - out of character! While Cora is finding new role of her own, she kinda does take her marriage for granted (may seem like a minor argument, but I'm a woman myself and I feel like we would react far more empathetic and understanding if the genders were reversed). Now, that neglect tops off lost Robert's hopelessness, his sense of being a pathetic outdated model, his lack of a valuable purpose and a place in this "wounded" world/family. And what must've struck Robert the most in those days of radical social/personal change is the powerlessness as a husband and father (wife has a miscarriage, his his eldest daughter and his heir fall out, his youngest girl runs off to Ireland with the chauffeur only to die in childbed ...because daddy allegedly listens to the wrong doctor...). Considering that the kind, honest, working-class woman was the only one for whom (for whose son) that man could actively be of use...make her life a bit easier, it makes sense that he feels more like himself again around her. At the same time, she gives him a bit of peace, understanding and self-esteem. - Yes, a mature, modern husband might demand that attention from his real wife, but we're in 1920 here (Robert's the product of an era dominated by proud, strong male archetypes). Bottom line, was the plotline too forced? - It was, yet not entirely unrealistic. In the end of the day, the new housemaid shouldn't be the only one that notices the family patron's "wretched" soul and truly bothers to ask how *he* is doing, "really".

Is he really cheating anybody or just expressing his loneliness? Cora is very busy with her affairs as well as the daughters; this is a common occurrence in which the wife is always busy and the children, after attending good schools and always protected by father simply decide to look at him like a reliable figure but never care about his feelings. Everybody forgets you need affection and understanding too and if something happens then you are the bad guy.

Jane was probably so attractove to Robert becaise she looked like a younger version of Cora in a time when they have not spoken that much, as their marriagw faded. Robert wanted affection and Jane probably his because of diffetent reasons like security (the Edna-Style maybe). Unlike others here in the comment section I think the story line was very fitting for his character; I've seen Robert always more as a softer charactrr whi needs followership or at least people to like him to be happy

I actually don’t think this storyline is unnecessary, because it is, a fact. Even a highly respected man with full integrity and dignity will also have the desire n passion when there’re sparks, why do we all pretend they’re not? This is a bold touch of reality. I mean, let’s be honest after years of marriage, many ppl have that urge when the sparks are reignited with someone else. Yet many choose to step back cuz nobody would risk the rest of their life for some one time passion which led to an unknown future. It’s that simple. I don’t understand why Robert has to be a Saint in this regard. He retrieved his sensibility didn’t he? Let alone there’s no future between them in the first place. This is men and this is marriage, this is love and this is passion. IT just HAPPENS. I understand if ppl don’t like the part, but it’s very real. It makes the character more vivid, realistic n well-rounded. I never thought Robert in this way before honestly, it’s from this part that I suddenly realize ahhhh he’s a husband, lord, father, son and oh, a man. He finally has something personal.........some private corner of his own heart.

You know, I can't imagine servants knocking and then immediately opening the door without an invitation from Lord Grantham or whomever. Star Trek's Picard could teach them a lesson: whenever his room was buzzed he'd say "Come," and then the visitor would enter.

I must be the only one who got the pressure and looming Failure hanging over Robert. Bad investments, no heir, stupid financial decisions, - everything he believed he was doing right to carry his family into the future is crashing down on him. His wife is fighting for her life and he is helpless to do anything. He is alone with no one to talk things over. He is one of those stalwart British who carry everything internally, and so suffers in silence. Someone vulnerable comes close to him, shares her grief/loss. He can do something for her if no one else, help her son further his schooling. The war has shattered him, he is cast aside as too old to serve and must watch the youth bear the brunt of violence. And when he reaches out for direction more than solace, he finds a willing soul in the new maid, someone who is still missing the man in her life. He's desperate for a path, but reality shakes him out of his dream and he realizes where his path is, with Cora, in life or death. He is shamed to realize the only way out for Jane is to leave before they both crumble. But in the end he knows it's right.
