    *Today I learnt that there is a difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist and get away with it. Dietitians are accredited and regulated. This lady here is a nutritionist. The issue with that is that a nutritionist is not required by any law or oath to be scientifically accurate.*

      Actually, some nutrionist a prefer the title because of the negative association with the word diet. My nutrionist has her bachelors of science as well as extra health classes she takes to keep up to date with current knowledge. And she calls herself a nutrionist because she believes diets are unsustainable. Instead nutrional plans cater to the individual to help them make slow life changes until they reach a sustainable place.

      The problem is not with the nutritionist it's with the governments because they don't recognise nutritionist/naturopaths in high regard, therefore anyone (even your dog) can call themselves a nutritionist and get away with it. Doesn't mean that people who go to uni to specifically study those things aren't smart or use scientific evidence. As someone who is at uni studying those things, believe me when I say there is so much scientific evidence.

    Hello! Nutrition major here on the way to (hopefully) becoming a dietician. This is a fair warning for anyone considering taking some of the things listed in her meal plans. 1) Probiotics should not be supplemented if you’re getting enough probiotics from natural cultures found in natural yogurt and or products like kimchi 2) Digestive enzymes should ALSO not be supplemented unless you have a preexisting condition (lactose intolerance). Our body specifically releases enzymes at different points in digestion, and eating digestive enzymes basically inactivates them in our stomach due to stomach acid. 3) OMG do not take anything marketed as oxygen that is just... absurd.
    I hope this helps :)

    I’m a real fitness professional and this “nutrition” advice is literally trash. The girls struggled with the advice because it was way over the top and didn’t fit their lifestyles and seemed all about getting these girls to eat less, which is NOT the point of healthy eating.
    Did she cut dairy because she suspected pcos? Is she changing their bedtimes because of some vague understanding of TCM? Does she understand what candida is and that it doesn’t care what color your apple is??
    I wish major publications would be more responsible with their health content. If you try a program like this and fail, it’s NOT YOU.

      @TinyFitnessHouston Před 6 lety +70

      Nisha yes, and real, persistent bloat can be a symptom of something that requires attention from an MD. I feel like we use “bloat” to describe the fact that no one, not even models, sits around with chiseled, glistening abs 24/7. Women of childbearing age have bodyfat. Women with bad lower back posture have a “pooch” in their lower abs (their words, not mine).

It was too strict. However, I’m not a nutritionist. It was unrealistic for a long term lifestyle if that isn’t remotely how they ate to begin with. And yeah...that candida thing was weird. I'll have pancakes, fries, tacos, and things at restaurants that aren't as strict as they made it look while still eating all plants and mostly whole foods. I can't do all whole food in winter because there are no plants growing here, but it's the idea of reducing packaged goods with added sugar and other things that aren't as important as we often feel.

    I wish that Buzzfeed would bring in a Registered Dietitian (RD) in for the next of these videos rather than a "celebrity nutritionist"; anyone can be a nutritionist, but it takes years of physiology, biochemistry, and research education to become an RD -- I'm in my 5th year of education towards that certification right now. Many of the recommendations in this video promote yo-yo dieting and the diet plans don't actually seem to be tailored to each of the ladies, but rather are just slight variations in a veganism-style "cleanse diet" push. Overall, the diets are what I would call "fad diets" because they don't promote sustainably-changed lifestyles due to their strictness and mode of implementation. I enjoy y'all's videos, but Buzzfeed, if y'all really care about giving your audience "news and entertainment worth sharing with their friends, family, and the people who matter in their lives" give them medically-sound, health-promoting content, not content that promotes orthorexic behaviors.

    • @DanaN4
      @DanaN4 Před 6 lety +18

      As someone also going through this certification process, I feel the exact same way! Honestly, using nutritionists in so many of their videos confuses the public (by giving varied advice that likely isn’t appropriate research-based practice) and degrades the worth of real RDs.

      @catgrantham5796 Před 6 lety +7

      Lydia, I think you missed my point. Yes, even dietitians can promote orthorexic behaviors, but veganism isn't actually what I had an issue with. It's the "cleanse-style" of diet that is not supported by research or necessary for the body. Veganism can be okay, for people interested in pursuing that lifestyle for moral or health reasons, however being a healthy vegan requires a significant amount of planning and education beyond what was presented in this video. My main concern is with a number of her specific recommendations that are not supported by research to be sustainable or healthy for the long-term. I do wish BuzzFeed would hire dietitians, there are plenty of dietitians that I disagree with, but at least the bulk of their recommendations are typically sustainable. Hiring "nutritionists" for these videos devalues the years of education and training that we do and delegitimizes dietitians as healthcare professionals.

      Definitely agree! I'm not currently qualified, but going into my 3rd year studying dietetics; and I personally don't agree with a lot of the diet advice given. As a dietitian you don't only get taught how food can affect your body, but also how to implement behaviour change. Watching this video, I feel as though the nutritionist introduced dramatic changes to each of the girl's diets, which can be unmotivating reflected in the 'slip-ups'. In addition, I don't think the girls should be made to feel bad for these 'slip-ups'; treats and one-offs are perfectly fine and healthy in moderation. I also think the diet plans given were quite restricted with 'salads' and is in no way necessary; healthy eating does not mean all smoothies, salads, and pills, and teaching this could even promote eating disorder behaviour. Healthy eating shouldn't be a chore, food can be healthy AND enjoyable if done right. This is just my personal opinion though and again I'm not qualified as of yet.

It's also odd that they hired a nutritionist instead of a dietician, as literally anyone can be a nutritionist through bs online courses where as dieticians are actually registered in scientific organisations.

They also tell people they have candida overgrowth and need to do this diet without any science-based medical diagnosis. That's quackery.

    This video gave me an off feeling, especially after watching the whole thing and reading the comments. The nutritionist didn’t explain why she gave them each their diet and besides that, they all basically stuck to the same diet without adding in factors like weight, body type, taste in food, etc. Plus she only recommended meditation, which is good, but even just small exercises in the morning and at night could have helped out their bodies. They didn’t need to cut their diets soo small and lackluster. If they ate enough of the good stuff and did a little exercise everyday they would have been even healthier. And plus you can achieve whatever those probiotics and pills promised easily and naturally without needing to enforce those into your diet.

That was kind of the point of the enzymes, especially for those who were dealing with significant bloating. Room temperature water is less irritating for your stomach, especially right after waking up, and it might be easier to drink the whole glass quickly that way. carrotopgrl you're not a cow. Cows have 4 chamber stomachs and their stomach acid is pretty neutral unlike humans, which is pretty acidic. Also we do not have the bacteria nor the other parts of a cows digestive system to break down cellulose, or even absorb plant food efficiently.

      Live how you guys wanna live, I'm just saying there are ways to be healthy while eating anything you want in moderation. Whether you eat meat, dairy, vegan, vegetarian, doesn't matter as long as you get all your nutrients, eat balanced, exercise, and be happy 😊 also, treats in moderation are a must in my opinion so you don't go crazy lol

      Thick Boy we can absorb plant foods efficiently just not really “woody” veggies that have a lot of cellulose (aka fiber! Which we need for a healthy colon) because it works our intestines. Meat, dairy, potato diet has very little fiber and essential vitamins and minerals we need through plant foods. Our body metabolizes vit/min. so much better than taking them through supplements

      I see the same and I'm not judging her on her struggle with ED. Why someone who has ED isn't already seeing a dietician for help is beyond me. But Jazz had a habit of complaining about and not participating in any videotape that requires her to change, even temporarily. She reverts back to whatever she is used to. Maybe that's also a struggle for her. But meanwhile maybe featuring someone more open to change would help people get more out of the video.

    My strategy when trying to eat healthy is this:
    Whenever I want to eat something I ask myself, “Is this good for me? What is it doing for me and to me? Would i get mad at myself for eating this later? And am I only eating this because I am too lazy to make something else? If the answers to these questions are bad then I don’t eat it. It has helped me so much.

    I lost weight when I started weighing my food. I only allowed 1.5 pounds of food per day (before adding liquids), then gradually went down to 1 pound per day. It made it easier to cut out carbs and meat since they tend to be heavier and forced me to incorporate more veggies

    Okay, I am a registered, certified, licensed Dietitian. I work in a hospital as a Clinical Dietitian and have been for almost 3 years now. I do NOT want to sound mean, but I want to clear the air. There are some good points in this video and I'm happy that the girls feel much better about their relationships with food, but there were a lot of negatives for me in this video on how to achieve that happiness.
    First of all, in a nutrition consultation, we would not include meditation or putting down phones in our recommendations. We would recommend healthy lifestyle changes, but we would not go into specifics, since that's not our area of expertise. Food experts talk about food. A different professional would discuss mental health, meditation, specific exercises, etc.
    Second, why add the probiotics and enzymes, and other pills? Sauerkraut has natural probiotics, so what's the point? We Dietitians would not recommend pills or short cuts in a diet plan. We are going to provide you with lifestyle changes, not short-term fixes. Eat whole foods that have natural probiotics and prebiotics (so one second you are preaching the "whole foods" thing, but then the next you give them a pill? Just eat the whole foods). Now if you have an issue with your pancreas and you need enzymes to help digest your food, okay. But as far as I can see, these women are perfectly healthy and capable of digesting their foods without needing enzymes. Gut health is very important, yes, but you can achieve that by eating whole foods and adapting healthy lifestyle choices.
    Third, being healthy is SO much more than just eating salads. Variety in a diet is awesome! Yes, I push whole foods and everyday I preach to cut the chips out. But you can have regular pasta noodles, eat certain foods in moderation, and still enjoy life! The power is within the choices. Also, going vegetarian or vegan just for a few weeks is not the best way to go. If that is a lifestyle choice you want to take, have at it. I support the vegetarian and vegan lifestyle. But to use them as quick fixes or like fad diets? Not quite right. You miss a lot of key nutrients when you cut out certain animal foods/products that are vital for your energy production and metabolism. If you are going to take this lifestyle change and go vegetarian/vegan, then please supplement those missing nutrients with other food choices, or at the very least, take a multivitamin (that would probably be the only pill I recommend).
    Fourth, where was the exercise component? Granted, exercise is not our area of expertise, but since this "nutritionist" is recommending other specific habits, why not mention exercise? Exercise is a critical part of health! Move that body!
    Fifth, there is also the topic of portion control. People know they need to eat the salad, but then they eat a salad that could feed three people. (sorry to use salad as an example, but I hope that it makes sense). Portion control is an issue that needs to be addressed too!
    Lastly, PLEASE for the love for everything good and Holy, hire a Registered Dietitian for the next video! "Nutritionist" is a term that literally anyone can take; my dog can take it! It is not regulated by the government. An RD (Registered Dietitian) is someone who went to school for a long time and had to pass a REALLY hard exam to get that credential, just so they can teach about foods.
    I am really sorry that this message became a novel and if I sounded harsh, but there is a LOT of mis-information out there in the world when it comes to food. Registered Dietitians have the responsibility to set the record straight. I am only here to let the company and the viewers know that being healthy doesn't have to be this "all or nothing" mindset. Moderation is key.
