After over 30 years of hiatus from operation, and a long and tenuous 5 year restoration effort, steam once again filled the cylinders of ex-Reading Company T-1 Class 4-8-4 "Northern" #2102. The 2102 was one of four engines of its class that survived the scrapper's torch and went on to continue to operate "Reading Rambles" excursion trains over the system after steam was well on its way out. These engines were rebuilt from 2-8-0 "Consolidations" into the larger 4-8-4 arrangement after the railroad was denied the ability to purchase new engines during wartime, and proved to be excellent at hauling coal trains and mixed freights through the mountains of Pennsylvania. 2102 later found itself under the ownership of Andy Muller and his railroad, the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad, later reorganized into the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad. The engine was a mainline star well into the 80's and up until 1991, when it was taken out of service. Now the engine is back in action, wearing the iconic Reading Rambles scheme, and to prove that it can handle the task of pulling the new iteration of the Iron Horse Rambles the Reading & Northern put the hulking T-1 to the test by putting it on a classic 50-car coal hopper drag over the very rails it traversed while in revenue service under the Reading, in addition to the Central Railroad of New Jersey trackage to Jim Thorpe. This was to simulate the weight of the Iron Horse Rambles consist, in addition to just doing it because the railroad wanted to. Now, please enjoy this exciting and nostalgic video of a steam powered coal drag brought to you by Blue Comet Productions!
This video was filmed in April 2022.
Spackle.
I think this is the first video I've seen that captures the feel of the day, very impressive sound quality too. Aside from the great sounds of 2102, one thing I'd never thought I'd hear is steam pulling wheels over fresh rail grinds like the shot at Hometown on their way down, I love that change in pitch as they gain speed. Great spots on the way up, that mood at Hometown was perfect!
Kkd
Reminds me of mark 1 videos same film covering 2102 pulling an identical train 30 years prior and i love this because of that.
Such a beautiful 4-8-4 “Northern” that has been back in service.

Was a Mary LARRY SPACKLECrab™️ out and aboot?
Y does she sound stronger than 4014? She’s so loud!😂
4-8-4s are such good locomotives a good balance of speed and torque. No wonder so many are running today. Probably easier to rebuild too than the odd ball locomotives. Oddball by todays standards anyway.
7:44 fun stuff.
How does spackle operate?
Is 2102 setup with a booster in the trailing truck because it looked like it was c huffing away coming out of that tunnel
Yes the booster was working at that location
Cool haven't seen a locomotive with a working truck booster on it yet
PANTSFEET
So, she is using her original whistle, or at the very least a replica of it?
That is the original whistle
I recently got the chance to ride on the Iron Horse Rambles excursion on May 28th as an 18th birthday present, and not only that, I got to ride in the cab. I'm also looking forward to see Reading 2100 make its comeback in early 2023 if I'm correct for the first Iron Horse Rambler doubleheader

I do believe that magnificent Iron Horse needs a Reading 6 Chime steam whistle
Buena experiencia de un viaje en tren con locomotora a vapor por las campiñas verdes de los pueblos de EU...!! 😅😂
Great video!
