No, the leaves will grow above the water level. Water lilies tend to grow closer to the surface of the water, that may be what you are thinking.

@@sujithkumar804 Yes, it occurs in nature as well. Water lilies are most easily identifiable by the slit in the leaf, whereas lotus do not have this. This is a more prudent identifier because lilies tend to foliate above the water level slightly as well when mature, yet not to the same extent of lotus, which could cause confusion.
