- This September the legend begins. #TheRingsOfPower
Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth's history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

When Elrond looked into the camera and said “the force is female” omg chills. And when Gandalf lectured Saruman on his white privilege everyone in the theatre stood up and clapped.
Such powerful moments.
Fr i'm kinda scared that they'll put his show full with lhbt and 'male privilege' bullshit and stuff. It's okay if a few characters are bi or something, but please don't act like everybody is gay, cause that's not how the OG Lord of the Rings felt either. Just keep political virtue out of this
Elves are are often portrait as gay in many LoTR parodies. Looking always. So stylish, perfect and divine. Ironically the elves in this casting look more straight than Peter Jackson's casting.
Pop quiz to see if you're even qualified to take part in the discussion: who is the only Tolkien character, Man, Elf, Maia, or Vala, who not only faced but defeated both Sauron and Morgoth? And on what real-world person's tombstone is that character's name inscribed?

For everyone in the comments saying ‘give it a chance’ and that we can’t judge from one trailer, let me make it clear. It is not just about this one trailer. If you’ve been following from the get go, or even since the Super Bowl trailer, and you are a fan of the books this entire production had been nothing but red flags.
For those of you who genuinely want to understand, here is a very brief highlight:
- Amazon buys rights and makes statements about wanting a GoT style show
- Announcement that the show will be about the Second Age, a story that is only very briefly summarized in the LotR Appendices that Amazon has rights to. The bulk of the Second Age material is in the Silmarillion and additional works that they don’t have meaning they’re going to be making up a lot of material.
- An Intimacy Coordinator is hired, rumors of mature content
- Tom Shippey the medieval scholar and Tolkien expert is fired under sketchy circumstances
-Super Bowl teaser reveals that cultural details of Tolkien’s world are being ignored such as short haired Elves, lack of beard for female dwarf.
-Vanity Fair article. Highlights include statements about ‘writing the novel Tolkien never wrote’ and wanting to update the story for ‘modern audiences’. Profiles for Elrond and Galadriel that are not true to character or their stories. Addition of Hobbits who didn’t play a role in the Second Age. Reveal of at least 9 original characters and comments implying that they want them to play a bigger role in the story. Compressing thousands of years of story into a single point in time.
-Amazon puts out ‘super fans’ trailers to try to stir up hype for the series, but the ‘fans’ are clearly paid actors who know nothing about LotR. After backlash Amazon hides the videos.
-Amazon flies several prolific Tolkien fans/influencers to Oxford for a tour, dinner, rumored goody bags, and 20 minutes of footage of the show. All of them make vague statements about being more optimistic after talking with the show runners, but none say anything about what they saw.
-Empire articles/covers reveal more inaccuracies. Celebrimbor is revealed and is not canon compliant. Elves are immortal and shouldn’t look aged (looks MUCH older than Galadriel when he should be her younger cousin additionally) and he doesn’t look to be able to pass for his profession as a smith. Poor quality on the costumes - Tar-Miriel is very clearly wearing a long sleeved shirt printed with the same pattern on her armor.
-Amazon’s marketing commercial for the copies of LotR they are releasing with RoP covers
-Amazon is airing this show on the anniversary of Tolkien’s death
And it goes on and on. This is a very brief overview, if you want to know more, go read the articles for yourselves and look up videos others have posted that chronicle every step of this fiasco. This doesn’t even get into Amazon’s horrible treatment of the fans or the moving the production from NZ to a stage they’re building in England. They don’t care about the lore or making something true to the heart of the stories.
They must have at least some rights to the Silmarillion/First Age works. I mean they show the Two Trees which are Silmarillion only right in the trailer.
@@jbrockleburst98 My understanding is that anything they want to include from the Silmarillion or other works has had to be approved on a case by case basis by the Tolkien Estate. I would guess that the Trees and what looks like the Oath are part of a prologue that they will put at the beginning of episode one, similar to what was done at the beginning of the FoTR movie. It will probably vaguely recount the bare basics of events to explain Morgoth and the Elves leaving Valinor. I wouldn’t count on Amazon having gone through to get that kind of permission for all the Second Age material they’re missing. Amazon’s rights to the Appendices only material leaves them with a lot of blank space and they’ve made it pretty clear that’s exactly what they want. They’ve made references in the articles and interviews that they wanted a blank canvas with room for their own stories. Considering they’re adding at least 9 original characters in, I would say it’s far more appealing to them to have the blanks than having to get permission and possibly fork over more money to be able to use material that actually pertains to the canon story.
@@SGABlencathra Ah, thank you! You’re right, the Trees are mentioned in the Appendices:
“He wrought the Three Jewels, the Silmarilli, and filled them with the radiance of the Two Trees, Telperion and Laurelin, that gave light to the land of the Valar.”
So there you have it, they didn’t have to get permission for the Trees because they are mentioned.

It's less a matter of when it was than how it was. He was given an incredibly unlikely free hand and a huge budget and all the time he needed. That's been extremely rare since 80s debacles like Heaven's Gate and One From the Heart made studio execs very wary of giving too free a hand to auteur directors.

One of the best scenes in the entire decade was this scene:
Thanos: “Chaos isn’t a pit, chaos is a ladder”
Shehulk: “You have not seen what I have seen”
Thanos: “Many who try to climb it fail, and never try again…..the fall breaks them”
Shehulk screams: YOU HAVE NOT SEEN WHAT I HAVE SEEN!!!
Very perfect script ever written
The part where Gandalf said "You're a wizard, Frodo" gave me chills- So amazing.
That’s from Star Wars.
when Aragorn said "the one piece is real" it sent a shiver down to my spine
It's amazing how a man who lived in the 30's managed to create such a wonderful work, well written and rich in content, while writers and producers of the 21st century, even with all the technology and tools available, are not able to do it and need the name "The Lord of the Rings" to create your own version of Game of Thrones.
Yeah... a 500mil usd fanfic is being made by a real life "lord of the parcels"
What happens when society is being dismantled and destroyed.
The series isnt even out yet

@@CompassionateCoos I'm confused why everyone is getting bent out of shape. It isn't out yet. Maybe it'll be bad, maybe it won't but I'm willing to give it a chance.
This was posted by someone else but was taken down. Still needs to be said:
For those of you who only know the movies and are wondering why any of this outcry matters, Tolkien didn’t set out to write just another fantasy, his first love was language and mythology. As a linguist, he set out to make the most beautiful language ever created (Elvish.) He invented Elvish based on Northern European languages.
As a historian, he wrote the Silmarillion and all the other extensive back lore that is only hinted at in the movies as alternate mythology for the British Isles. The very creation of Middle Earth by the gods through an act of song was informed by Finnish myths. He was steeped in Northern and Western European culture and the myths, legends, languages, stories, racial characteristics, history, and cultures of Middle Earth are inextricably built from corresponding roots of European culture in a way that no fantasy has ever been able to replicate before or since.
He is considered by many of us to be the true father of modern fantasy and no one-bar none-has equaled the depth and verisimilitude he brought to that creation.
This trailer and all Amazon interviews to date prove that they don’t care about any of this and intend to dismantle the very foundation of why Tolkien wrote these books as a labor of love in the first place. He loved his culture, his history, and his language and his invented languages, world, races, and stories were the medium through which he communicated his love of his ancestral heritage.
To change his work in the ways shown in this trailer and subsequent interviews is not just to reinterpret some surface aspect of his stories, it is to completely undermine his stated intent, strike at the heart of his passion, and directly attack his own cultural heritage.
Very astute. well said
My favorite part was when Dernhelm killed the Witch King and when he revealed himself to be the woman Eowyn, Merry said: "Don't get cocky kid!". I was simply awe-struck and inspired!
The way Amazon brings all the Tolkien fans together is amazing! Great company. Nothing connects people as much as a common enemy. Keep up the good work!
We're just a small minority Sir...
Hell just read the comments...
@nieooj gotoy they really did go back to the source material, back to the source material, back to the source material, back to the source material, back to the source material, back to the source material as they say.
I like that you paraphrased the part were Celebrimbor hugged Sauron and declared that "The enemy of my friend is my Frenemy, as long as he is a frenemy of my friends enemy."
Then taught Sauron the art of ring making.
It was beautiful.
@@Ub_Dub :)
@@Ub_Dub let me put it this way: I was being as sarcastic as the Predator when he's bitten Frodo's finger and said: "This is a tasty burger!"
I absolutely love the scene where Galadriel shouts “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED” so majestic, so original and so Tolkien. Brought tears to my eyes.
Can someone explain this meme
@@AlexLopez-uf4ho they are mocking the trailers

My favorite part was when smaug lifted the sword of Gryffindor from the black cauldron and shouted "this is Sparta" before dropkicking legolas off his battle elephant.
“The past is dead, we either move forward or we die with it”
Yep can’t even give us a trailer without snapping us in the face
Jesus Christ, you guys had a budget of $ 1 billion. That in itself is amazing, you HAD the power to create the best of the best in modern cinematography. Not only did you have the money, but you also had the rights to one of the best and richest (lore-wise) IPs out there.
And yet, you fucked it up. It's wild how incompetent Amazon really is. It goes to show that no amount of money can buy common sense and good decisions. Everything you touch turns to garbage (look at New World, look at Lost Ark, look at literally everything you do).
I would genuinely be ashamed to say I work at Amazon.
Hands down best part when Elrond asks galadriel " who sent you?" Then she says
" You did, 35 years from now you reprogrammed me to be a protector here in this time. " Goosebumps!
@gtoss chddy I’m sure it’ll be brave and stunning.

Fine. I'll die with it then. And I'll be in good company.
I’ll die with the lord of the rings by Peter Jackson playing though my ear phones

Cringe comment
I love how the Harfoots or early Hobbit people had hybrid accents of Irish, West Country English and Caribbean. In the future when Hobbits they'll settle on the West Country accent of the real life English shires of today. I used to have a little bit of a west country accent but lost it. My Hobbitness was lost with it. Although I'm a SixFoot so not really their race. I do love a pint of cider on a hot day though.
"DID YOU CREATE A MASTERRING BEHIND MY BACK?" Celebrimbor asked calmly
I believe an Amazon fantasy series would have turned out better if they had just created their own mythology rather than appropriating Tolkien’s.
@@rickyrayrosenberg420 Imagine this same exact trailer but nothing Tolkien related. I think you’d have a good amount of buzz. Buying an IP has value but also brings with it commensurate expectations. Hollywood does not seem to understand this.
Exactly
I only hate it because they had the audacity to appropriate Tolkien's work for this
But like the man himself said, evil cannot create, it can only corrupt
misappropriating
If the WOT series didn't have the WOT in the title, and the names were changed, no one would think to themselves, "Doesn't this resemble Wheel of Time?" That's how far Amazon is willing to pervert their series.
They have created their own fantasy. This isnt Tolkien.
The moment when Sauron yelled 'NO SOUP FOR YOU!' at Galadriel send shivers down my spine! This is gold, Amazon...GOLD! The showrunners are truly masters of their domain!
I also enjoyed when Galadriel said about Sauron: “he’s not ring worthy”.
i loved it when the dark elf said "I have a dream", it resonated with me in so many levels, well done!
Any time I feel down and alone, I look to this comment section and it makes me feel better. Like there's others out there just like me. ❤️
