  • Electric cars or internal combustion engine cars-which is better? Electric cars were in their heyday back in 1900, but a sudden rise in petrol engine cars, accompanied by battery technology inefficiencies killed electric cars by 1920. However, with recent improvements in battery technology and power electronics, electric cars have made a strong comeback. We will compare these totally different technologies scientifically, and come to understand which is superior. Here we are using Tesla model S as electric car to compare with its petrol engine car counter part.

      These statements are all shortsighted or paid adds: Road taxes are paid only by ICE users w/ gasoline taxes etc. Billions of $ for battery development were paid by tax payers, SpaceX by NASA, EV car sales by ICE car sales etc. Once EV fleet grows and nobody else will be left to pay all this excessive EV grey energy cost, are we willing to pay 3 time more for basic transport? Cheap Green zero emission intercity transportation ww will not be automatically electric with batteries. For instance: intracity electric bikes sell well, poor daily autonomy EV sell only with big subsidies and 40tons EV trucks do not exist. If smart cars no longer collide and can be light and economical, heavy EV have no economical futur at forseen possible batt. ener. density. Sometime a little bit of common sense helps thinking strait.

      @@thedriven1415 Fastest in the world? Ever heard of tesla? Nit only does p100d have quicker acceleration than a Lamborghini Aventador, but they are coming out with the tesla roadster which does 0-60 in 1.9 seconds. Faster than the previous fastest car in the world, the bugatti chiron. And electric cars are very new, so they can only get much much better from here. And yes gas cars do have the upper hand for being mechanically operated, but they are already working on solar powered electric cars. Therefore you eventually won't need outlets or charging stations. Solar power won't run out, but petroleum oil definitely will.

      Mechanicing I assume was what you took. From what I can tell classes to do with mechanic work really is not that great. I have taken it as well and videos like this and Eric the car guy and working as an off-handed mechanic for free at a shop taught me more than college did. Though my college was cheap had no real up to date cars to work on. The writing portion really did no good at all. The videos above and such work great. Then again thanks to all the extra classes I was forced to take I forgot most of what I learned in college, who the fuck needs to take music to be a mechanic. Oh it revs at a high octane and it should be a mid range octane thus something is wrong I conclude.

      Grim reaper I agree with you totally .. I mean I'm in Electrical Engineering & I have a subject called Machine Design in which all we have to do is draw a fucking sheet & no work on a real machine through which we can visualize it completely. I wonder when this is gonna change. o.O

      You reminded me of a math class I took while doing college to be a mechanic we had a certain type of special math mechanical math something odd. The thing is the teacher even said the math was obsolete, I asked math experts, and people the field and they like yeah we do not use that anymore. The teacher often said the book is wrong but sometimes he is wrong and we should sometimes trust the book. I am sitting in the corner like make up your goddamn mind. Everyone failed that class not because it was hard but because the teacher was the worse. Imagine having timed test an hour at most with math that you barely can understand due to shit teaching, plus once you reach the 10-minute mark he starts counting it down shouting out every minute on the minute and I am being generous saying 10 minutes. Holy shit when it hit one minute you could swear that it was time for a rocket to blast off 60 seconds remaining, 50 seconds remaining, 40, 30, 20, 10, 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and time. That just makes you fail. 10 minutes left okay hurry hurry hurry 9 minutes okay heard you the first time. Just absolute garbage and a way for them to make money and sadly a way to fuck you up. To me it is like I came here for one specific subject I want to learn this therefore at least 70 percent of my work should consist of it at least not 5 percent. At my school you spend a few hours on the mechanicing classes and then like 12 ish on other shit, math, music, irrelevant math, and a few other things, some weird crap I have no clue what it was for but it was annoying it made me feel like it was blaming me for something I did wrong without telling me what I did the same for the whole class.
      Honestly, I dropped out of college due to me not learning jack shit it felt like at least. Just too much fucking hassle to learn one simple thing. I am a smart person (3.8gpa double the college average in a lot of things a genius and such) etc but I do not have the gas for that shit plus when you start forgetting what you are supposed to be learning it is time to just say fuck it.

    Personally, I'd like to see a future like this: There electric cars powered by batteries for those who don't drive to much, there are hydrogen fuel cell vehicles for those that do a good bit of driving but wish to have an electric motor for propulsion, there are hydrogen gas powered vehicles (would be the replaced fuel for gasoline engines) for those who prefer Internal Combustion Engines, and there are Diesel vehicles powered that use biodiesel for fuel; in this future the consumer would have the greatest choice.

      @@jurgenklopp1506 I find that hard to believe. Given their inherent weight advantage over battery powered vehicles and with modern electric vehicles using numerous rare earth metals for the batteries and motors, demand will rapidly exceed supply. Additionally, ICE vehicles have only become more efficient as time has gone on and as I mentioned they can be converted to run off hydrogen gas to produce no emissions. Once more alternative fuels become mainstream and petroleum based fuel options become the minority, then there argument that ICE's are less harmful to the environment than battery powered EV's could become a thing (albeit quite unlikely.) Presently, most ships, trucks, and trains across the world are powered by Diesel engines and many applications aren't suitable for a battery powered electric drive. No to mention that all hospitals, and many business have backup diesel generators as opposed to auxiliary power banks due to cost and space constraints.

      Fun fact: if we consider battery production emissions and assume that hydrogen is produced from renewable energy, an internal combustion engine car running on hydrogen will pollute nearly 50% less than an EV. And that is if all the energy an EV uses is renewable.

    You forget to mention that an IC-Engine wastes about 70% of the energy into heat and friction, only 30% goes to actually moving the wheels. An electric car wastes only about 10%

      Well you still have thing like differential (where it might lose a bit of raw power output) and stuff like that, but the thing is the battery and the electric motor still produce heat. So its not 100% efficient because it is still generating that heat that goes to waste. If 100% of the power were going straight to the wheels there would be no heat.

      It depends on the engine. A current Formula 1 engine is very close to 50% thermal efficiency.

      Electric furnaces are not 100% efficient, they lose heat, and by heat loss I'm referring to the heat that is lost to the surrounding environment, so nope, nothing is 100% efficient.

    Great video. The comparisons it was missing were the resale value, battery life in electric car vs. engine major repair in IC cars, and the environmental issues at scrap yard, especially with the large batteries used in electrical cars.

      There are some additional points very important for customers:
      a) time need to charge/fuelling is very different (charging Tesla needs about half an hour at "super"-charge)
      b) lifetime of a battery, and more important - degradation of a battery in time (travel distance shorter when it's old e-car)
      c) price. Cost of use is less for electric vehicles, but their price is higher, then we need to compare total cost (I haven't seen any, it's very interesting to learn about)
      d) winter exploitation. We need to wait when our gas/diesel engine warm to proper temperature, and we use a special gel for diesel, then we use a car normally. How the lithium battery behaves in cold? What if electric car stayed on the street for a night when it was -30 C and we have no cables - could it start, how long it could run, and so on.
      As for me, I need to know about these things before deciding to buy one or another type of the car.

    There is no issue with "cornering" btw. It is great to drive around fast and curvy backroads here in Germany. The low center of gravity and the good weight distribution is an advantage.

    I'm confused about the weight issue, why does the increased weight change the coefficient of friction? Isn't that just a material property of 2 surfaces touching each other, also the increased weight is an increase in normal force so the frictional (or tractional in this case) force is increased in a heavier car

      Good question, Things are not perfect as we learn in the text books. This topic is known as 'Tire load sensitivity' . Please Google this term. Coefficient of friction between the tire and surface decreases as we increase the load.

      Learn Engineering ... One needs to maintain a healthy Skepticism even with Text Books... Heavy vehicles always​ perform better in snow as a result of better traction. The same can be extrapolated for dry road surface traction.

    When saying that it needs one hour of charging its important to point out that you start every day with a full charge if you charge at home. You can not refill your ice car from a regular home. You might not ever go to a "gass station" or fast charger again if you don't do over 4-5 hour trips

      flying cars exists since ages... But you need a pilot license to operate.

      @jan simonides You are thinking gasoline. Special petro stations are needed for ICE cars because handling gasoline is dangerous. This is not necessary for electric charging. They can be put anywhere -- like in front of restaurant or in the mall or in your home garage. In another 20 years there will be charging stations everywhere and no (or at least few) petro stations like we have now.

      @jan simonides When you can buy nice EV for 2/3 the cost of an ICE vehicle and it costs 1/4 as much to run, most, if not all, people will have electric cars. Don't laugh. The only thing expensive about a EV is the battery and that is going down fast. It is all about costs.

    kinda sad being 14 and not being able to drive because soon i wont be able to buy any of my dream cars because they will be really expensive and the cars that will come out by that time are mostly going to be eletric cars, i am a huge fan of petrol cars since i was a little kid and seeing it go away is pretty depressing

      Although the oil lobby do its best to mean EV has a close pollution balance sheet, the truth is in the worst case the EV is allways winner (on a complete life cycle).
      In good cases the difference is huge (15/20 tons of co2).
      In local pollution, including noise pollution, no need to say wich is the winner.
      And you can notice studies doesn't count the other benefits like second life fir the battery...

      the power plant making the electricity is usually burning fossil fuel to cook the planet (coal or natural gas), mining the lithium and copper are also downsides although less steel is needed for the EV than for an ICE powered car - imo, EVs are better for the environment, but the margin is less than some thing

      In europe it's very low, close to zero in France, norway, swenden, switzerland...

      Kind of, but not really. Heavier cars need more suspension repairs, they still need coolant changes, still need tyre rotations, alignments, etc.
      The only things they'll be missing out on is engineering planned obsolescence into in the engine, and all the emissions controls, which are guaranteed by law for 10 years anyway. Cars will still be engineered to rust apart after 7-15 years, depending on brand. Any brand that doesn't do planned obsolescence will perish, from not having any customers to sell to.

      brian whittle you know, not everything is a giant conspiracy. Maybe it's just not economically viable to create an electric car. Think about it.
      Not talking about 2017, but let's just say five years ago. Why were car manufacturers "dragging their feet" than? Well for starters batteries were really expensive, and still are relatively expensive. At $250/kWh you need to spend $15,000 for just the battery alone. Cannot make an affordable car if one component is that expensive.
      And to make things worse, it's not repairable. Once it breaks you must make a new one. An engine and transmission is less expensive to create and can be repaired.
      In 2017 battery prices are still getting to a reasonable price. The Model 3 has 220 miles and a 60kWh battery. Let's say Tesla spends $125/kWh on the batteries. Thats 21% of the price going to one component.
      Even at the industry "goal" of $100/kWh it's still expensive to manufacture electric cars.

      ryan pardo and two 4 pipe exhaust manifolds on a V block, incorrect engine rotation, flywheel at the wrong end, differential the wrong way around (but works for displayed rotation), and did anyone notice the CV joints on the front solid axle of a RWD car?       Many batteries are lasting well over 100,000 miles, some are making it to 200,000 miles without issue. Cost will vary widely between cars and pack sizes, and as EVs become more common, inexpensive, refurbished packs will become more available. The price of batteries will continue to fall, so by the time you need to replace a battery pack, you probably wont have to pay much for one.

      Current generation Lithium Cobalt last 10 to 15 years for Vehicle propulsion. Soon Batteries will last over 20 years in cars. 1997 RAV4 EV NiMH just require massive reconditioning work but you still use the same NiMH battery pack from 1997. So those batteries are already 20 years old and still running.

      @@superleetmegapunx there actually test cars that went very fast on steam fairly recently, like 70s or so. But yes, ultimately it's bulky, relies on pistons like a typical ICE engine, and can be quite dangerous to maintain. You can get serious burns from hot pressurized steam.

      Let's be real by the time electric/hybrid cars become more common than gasoline cars. Most energy will be supplied by nuclear, renewables, and natural gas. So its not really a problem. Coal is finite resource so eventually were going to move on to more efficient sources of energy like nuclear and wind

      And it could be cheaper if u have a dc motor. A dc motor for 500 hp is 17,000 in U.S. currency and batteries would be 15,000 for a rechargeable 60 kwh li ion battery. And u wouldn't need an inverter since batteries are dc so it would be efficient. Ac motors are more expensive but the reason they put them in is because they are more precise and are slightly more environmentally friendly. An ac motor for 600 hp is 38,000 US currency.

      @@randomgenericusername3890 In any case you loose energy for speed control. For a DC Motor you would need a pulse control otherwise you could never drive slowly. This pulse control is not 100 % efficent. The same with the inverter, bur here you control the frequnency and the motor is without brushes, so it will last much longer.

    As cool as electric cars are, I really enjoy the exhaust note of a gas powered car. It gives the car character. Plus, as a car enthusiast, half the fun is fixing/ modding your car. It makes it more yours. (If you know what I mean.) what mods can I do to a Tesla to make it faster? Not very many. As of now, I believe that neither vehicle is better than the other.

      This isn't a big deal: If you plan to park long-term and don't have an outlet, just disable "always online" in the menu, problem solved.
      This is a rare scenario but there you go. Only drawback is the car wont update its software in that setting and might take a few seconds to startup when you come back.
      Also, similar to not leaving lights on, turn off cabin overheat protection, you wont need to keep it cool inside the car.

      @Vaas Montenegro im going to refer to refer only to teslas because they are the most popular electirc vehicles. Rear engine cars are mostly sports cars, teslas are sedans crossovers and suvs. Those sports cars are also very expensive, and people mostly buy sedans crossovers and suvs. A sports car is also meant to be fast, so you will go way faster with a sport car, making a more deadly crash. You cant compare a tesla to a sport car. Teslas are also one if not the safest cars in the world, not only because of no engine, you can look up a crash test to see how safe it is. Also, the tesla model x is the only suv that refuses to roll over, you can look that up aswell. It also has safety systems, for example the automatic emergency braking system. What i wanted to say here is that since most crashes are frontal, more crumple zones make a tesla crash way more survivable than a petrol car.

    Half of the energy charging batteries from ac is lost in the rectification circuit converting ac to the to dc. Then a further half of the battery power is lost in the motor electronic control circuit.
    That works out at 25 percent.

      That's not true. Battery chargers today have very efficient AC-DC converters such as the totem-pole bridgeless converter which can reach up to 99% peak efficiency. Also, the motor electronic circuit consumes less than 1% of the motor power. Electric drivetrains and battery chargers are becoming very efficient today with the advancement of semiconductor materials and Digital Signal Processors.

    The Tesla Model 3 is only 150lbs heavier than an equivalent BMW 3 series vehicle. So with newer batteries weight will not be much of a factor.

    You touched upon many things but you missed the fact that you charge your electric car at home so the time to charge does not matter as much, people don't often realize how much time their car is left not used in their driveways and that is when you would charge it, unless you are on a road trip in wich you will be able to use superchargers and get 100 miles every 15 min and with the smallest battery haveing a 200 mile range it would take less than 30 min depending on how much battery is left in the car. This wasn't in the video so I just took it opon myself to educate the viewers who are still sciptical as to if electric cars are viable in the real world

      Most of the people live in flats / apartment complexes. There is no way to charge car as this is privilege only for those living in house. Therefore is good that this point was not mentioned. If you don't have possibility to charge car for example at work then only option is to wait hours at nearest charger ... which is not so convenient.

      Lukas Dzunko just because there are people who can't charge the car doesn't mean that the entire argument is invalid. 3rd party companies and even the biulding owners themselves are putting chargers in parking garages and street sides to combat this but it has not been universally done. People have already thought about this problem and like any problem there is a solution

      Ask your building manager if you can talk to the owner about installing an EVSE. You could probably arrange to split the cost, on the theory that you leave it there in the event that you leave. He'd probably go for it. After you leave, he could advertise: "EV READY!"

    Within the first minute I learned a fundamental that is overlooked. People count heat as a loss; without admitting the fact that heat increases pressure in gases. The efficiency of IC is thus underestimated. Thank you.

      The insurance is higher because evs catch on fire easily due to easy puncture. The VW evs are pretty good because the electric motor is where the engine would normally be. The placement in Tesla is what makes the insurance high.

    Not to mention that OVERALL, you save more time "refueling" with an electric car. This is because you are not using your time to stop at a gas station. You are charging while your car is in your garage and doing something else (sleeping, cooking, or eating while on long trips, etc.). Only on long trips would this time start to shift back towards I.C.E. vehicles. However, you would've saved up enough time, on the other days, to more than absorb that time. Over a year, BEVs save WAY MORE time "refueling" than an I.C.E. vehicle.

      Juozas K ... Of course that's possible. Tesla has already presented that years ago... They swapped 2 battery packs in the time it took to fill up a typ. sedan with petrol. This remains a possibility for unique applications like Racing, Service industry, etc. where time is a critical factor. For general public use, it has proven to be un-necessary... although this is already done with small power tools.

      Great for short hops, but what happens when you do have to drive long distances. I know most electric cars only have ~100 mile battery. I know more people who would rather stop for 5 minutes at a gas station than for an hour to charge.

      More recent EVs have ~500km (which google tells me is over 300 miles) ranges. When you drive a long distance the stops are fairly natural every 3-4 hours when you'd need a bathroom break or sandwich/coffee anyway. Newer rapid chargers starting to be deployed across europe this summer deliver up to 400kW of power which (provided the car's battery can take it) could potentially allow you to charge 400km worth of range for a typical EV (15kWh/100km) in around 10 minutes (the cars of 2017 and 2018 can't take that charge rate yet but later cars like Porsche's Mission E are rumored to be capable of charge rates in that range, I've also allowed for ramp up and down in that time estimate).

    My phone charge longer than electric car. It takes 3 hours to charge from 20% to 100% and 3 hours and 30 min from 0% to 100%

      @@Ignisan_66 no. My phone really charge on 3 hours and It doesn't get damage and the charger unlike my old phone that charge up to 8-11 hours because the charger is damaged so we buy a new charge on my old phone but now I have a new phone

    what about the duration of the battery? As i know, the lifespan of the battery is limited and with some years, it will need to be replaced

      They only lose a few percent per year. Tesla batteries have an 8 year warranty too.

      The technology is improving too fast for a car you buy in near future to definitively say. Current Generation Lithium Cobalt already on the road should last 10 to 15 years for effective Vehicle propulsion. But that is going improve very soon to over 20 years Non Cobalt type Lithium Ion.

      As I understand the Tesla battery will have about 80% capacity after 25 years... Of course that is with recommended charging & discharging techniques for extended battery life.

      Simple, un a ICE, you have ti replace everything 15,000 Km ir less, oil, oil filter, gasoline filter, spark plugs, clean or change fuel injection system, aire filter.And how do you drive can make it early or just some more kilometers more.
      Batteries Will need a change eventualy. Uppss but your lunges ir the ones of your kids or grand-kids, Will never have a replace, they must need to pay for medicines or oxygen to live . Hope I've been clear.

      After reviewing data of the first teslas produced 8 years ago its safe to say that a tesla battery pack still has 80percent of its capacity after 25 years.. due to good battery care which tesla is doing in their cars! And after that the batterys can be used for solar storage for another 20-40 years.. and after that they can be recycelt!
