CLINT EASTWOOD & The Birth of Gorillaz | New British Canon

- Cartoon bands as a concept had existed before Gorillaz. While The Archies, Josie and the Pussycats and Alvin and the Chipmunks had toyed with the medium, Gorillaz was the first time where it was more than a novelty. For the past two decades they have been pumping out weird and wonderful pop music, spanning multiple genres and featuring far reaching musical guests. Who would have thought that the guy from Blur would work with Bobby Womack, Neneh Cherry, Noel Gallagher and half of the Clash? But beyond that the group has defied all expectations and become global superstars. Smashing charts with hits like "19-2000", "Rock The House", "Feel Good Inc", "DARE", "Stylo", "On Melancholy Hill" & "Saturn Bars." As much as they are a Cartoon band, the project has evolved way beyond that. But it had to start somewhere, with their tentative first steps. This is New British Canon and this is the story of "Clint Eastwood".

Unoriginal, but it's always a tie between Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc.

Damon Albarn almost singlehandedly defined two generations’ music taste.

@@emptysoul8462 Eh, I know :/
Most people have heard of Song 2, Feel Good Inc. and Clint Eastwood, but I wish he was better known as a musician and songwriter. Also Blur are criminally overlooked compared to other bands, as if they were only confined to britpop and weren't able to experiment
2D's eyes aren't gone they are fully blacked out. He isn't blind.
Blacked out sometimes. They're portrayed as white in basically all of the newer stuff, and On the cover of Demon Days he seems to have white eyes with black pupils.
its called an 8-ball fracture. it fills the eye with blood making it appear black, though doesnt fill it entirely leaving the white part, so its greatly exaggerated for 2D.

Gorillaz music never gets old, demon days has aged like a fine wine
Truly good music doesn’t age. People not listening to old music implies that they never really loved the music itself, but only loved it because it was popular.
And ghost train was ahead of it's time. I couldn't tell if it was just made recently
I couldn't say it any better, I can listen to demon days on loop for days
It all gets better the more I listen to it.
Feel good still gives me chills
I’ve never taken the time to look into the Gorillaz, the moment you said “the guy from Blur” I was like “oh shit no wonder the Gorillaz rule”
Look into them more, you won't be dissapointed
The Almighty Couch I meant in the form that I’ve never looked into their history, demon daze is my favorite album easily and I really love plastic beach
@@baulzzzzzzz2278 Ohh gotcha. My mistake (that makes more sense now that I read it again)
I only recently started listening to Blur, we cleared out all the CDs in the car because we had been listening to the same 20 or so CDs on rotation for a very very long time, and one of the ones we brought in was the best of Blur, which I had never really listened to, but when the first song came on I said to my mum "this sounds like Damon Albarn" and she told me it was, it was a really surreal moment for me as I'd never really thought about what he did before Gorillaz
Yeah when he said Blur wasn't well received in the US I was like...... Wha?
Melancholy Hill may be the best pop song ever written. It’s just perfect in my ears
The video is underrated too
I love the acoustic version way more, I could just never quite get the synth-y feel of the song. The acoustic version just amplifies the lyrics even more, kind of like El Manana or O Green World. But it's a good song.
@@franciss2529 It's perfect the way it is in my opinion, synths can do much more than a guitar
i saw it live a couple of years ago and its still the best live performance of any song ive ever seen
Damon was born to be a music genuis honestly, especially because of how passionate he is about music.
Yeah, I truly admire his passion and dedication! You know he doesn't do it just for the fame or money, because it really is his way of expressing himself and share his outlook of the world. Also, he takes a lot of risks with his music and isn't afraid of potential failure, rather he sees those mistakes as opportunities to grow both as an artist and as a person. I can't help but feel inspired by this man!
And they're still going massively strong with Song Machine in 2020, and one of my new all-time favourites, "PAC-MAN" dropping 2 days ago

Clint Eastwood was the song of the summer of 2001. The fall would bring a change to the world. Clint Eastwood reminds me of the good days.
Yeah I remember starting the year with Ms Jackson and then come summer Clint Eastwood was the bomb.
oof, late 2001 was certainly the true end of the great 90's vibe for sure.
That and Daft Punk's "One More Time" (another animated music video).
And the song encapsulating 2005 is Dirty Harry...
I'm a bit older than you probably. Not quite as nostalgic. But yeah. While I wasn't shocked by 2001/9/11, I dreaded what I knew would be coming after. There's a line from the 80s, through 2001, up to where we are now. Bad times make for great art though.
I was 6 and I heard it in spring. I felt so hip for liking it.
As an American Club DJ, I began a list of all the "Songs people never request by their REAL title", "Clint Eastwood" is better known by Customers as "Sunshine in a Bag". Favorite Song: Kids With Guns
You could make a whole video just on Demon Days
Exactly, there's so much to talk about regarding that album. It's a masterpiece. And so is Feel Good Inc., which deserves every bit of success it has for its musical dynamics, lyrical themes and visuals
Demon days is so amazing. Watched the live concert DVD with my mom when I was a kid, opened my eyes to music i never knew could exist. I still play it and just feel nostalgia
Honestly I might actually prefer their first album even though Demon Days is OF COURSE an all time classic... just has that extra personal significance to me. (My favourite track might be O Green World, though I also love November Has Come)
Demon Days was such an album to me, when I was 3 years old I would just shout out 'Gorillaz!' to my Dad and he'd stick it on. It was the first musical influence to me and still my favourite album of all time. It gets better with age alike all of the band's music.
@@isabellamorris7902 I dont think you're alone in preferring it to the first album, I think most people agree it's a better album, and personally I prefer plastic beach to either
Damon Albarn is arguably the most underrated music producer alive.
I dunno, he seems fairly widely respected in the industry and his records have sold millions.
I actually sing and rap whole Clint Eastwood as lullaby to my 1 year old daughter and it works 100%. It started as an accident, but she loves it since :D
10 yrs from now shes gonna discover it somehow and have it feel so familiar but have no idea from where its from
@@pogchamp9669 You just explained my childhood. I also grew up with Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy".
@@pogchamp9669 You say that hypothetically, but something similar happened to me when I played the Gorillas Geep game that they did in Adobe Shockwave as a kid. The background music was 19-2000. I had no idea what the song was called, nor that the people in the Geep were the Gorillaz. Ten years later in high school I found 19-2000 completely randomly through CZcams recommendations, and promptly flipped out at the sheer improbability of that happening. Ever since they've been one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite band :)
Gorillaz are especially popular with young children for some reason.
Maybe because they're a cartoon band?
Her eventual first words to her kindergarten classmates: "Finally someone let me outta my cage..."
At this point Damon Albarn's voice is a whole genre of music
I know right???
Sorry to be basic, but Feel Good Inc will be the forever fave. Special mention to Tranz, O Green World, and Saturnz Barz.
Feel good inc is popular for a reason lol
I've always appreciated the horror references peppered into Gorillaz albums, particularly the sampling of Romero's "Day of the Dead" on "M1 A1."
La la la la la la la la la la HEY!!
Empire Ants. It reminds me of Summer 2011, Plastic Beach was on a constant repeat. Such a theatrical album, I never get tired of it. Gorillaz’s Magnum Opus, if you ask me.
Interesting, it took me a long time to enjoy Plastic Beach being a massive fan of the first two albums. I thought there were just too many abruptions to the album's flow. Especially Sweepstakes was too weird for me. Maybe I just wanted it to be more of the same.
Love that song, also.
I absolutely adore Plastic Beach, genuinely one of my all time favourite albums
Agree!! I think it is flawless. My favorite is stylo or some kind of nature
Yes, yes, yessssssss!!!!
Clint Eastwood was my first Gorillaz song, and part of my alt-rock awakening during high school. I was never much for pop or hip-hop as a teen, but Clint Eastwood hit all the right beats: moody, dark, a little stoned, with a catchy hook and a heavy-hitting verses. It remains one of my favorite songs of all time, and it absolutely deserves some of the credit for introducing me to a wider world of music beyond my parents' classic rock.
Pffft, you had far greater examples to discover that by; if were talking Brits, you had Portishead/ Aphex Twin/Massive Attack/ & Radiohead just to name a few & none of them were mass fed to the public like the Gorillaz. You were just introduced to more cookie cutter crap from the label establishments & you bought it hook, line & sinker. P.S. They're just a CAKE cover band.
@@JeighNeither Can't have a discussion about music without somebody like you coming in it seems
I mean, everyone has to start somewhere, and that usually means starting with what's more popular and well-known and slowly moving to what's less popular but fits your particular musical niche. It's not a crime against taste to like something that a bunch of other people also happened to like.
Calm down. Getting uptight ruins your ability to enjoy music, which is presumably why you listen to it in the first place.
(And Cake is good, but trying to pretend that Gorillaz is ripping them off has to be one of the biggest musical stretches I've heard in a while.)
My favorite? That's like choosing a favorite faze of my life.
I was 13 in 2000 - the first record shaped my taste forever.
Fast forward to 2010 - I am just getting over an addiction and a mental brakedown, the first thing I got myself after rehab was Plastic Beach.
Fast forward to 2017 and the darkness coming on, Let Me Out is on repeat. The future is here. We've Got the Power keeps me hopeful.
Fast forward 2018 I've accepted the darkness and learned how to make light from it. The now now captures that light.
So like I said, asking me to choose an album, let alone a song is like asking me to choose a time in my life.
The Gorillaz have always been there for me.
Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head and Punk are up there for me.
That’s a good one!
Hey, hey, hey, don't forget about Jem and the Holograms.
Aren't they the ones who went platinum without technically selling a single, because one of the songs was part of a toy thing?
@@av.punk.801 There were songs in every episode of the cartoon, plus you'd get a cassette tape of songs in the box with every doll you collected. There were about 150 songs over the three years of the show.

I think the best thing Gorillaz ever did for pop music, was to announce that "If you're going to be fake, at least be interesting..."
Damon is a genius. Gorillaz was so damn cool and different from all the cheesy pop bands of that time.
Damon Albarn is actually genius.
I love too many of Gorillaz's tracks to choose one

Best live performance i've seen in my life
I wonder what was British people's first reaction when they heard it back in 2001. Did they think, oh, so Blur are doing hip-hop now?
From what I remember of my teens, it was more like "oh cool, the lead singer of Blur has created a cartoon band". They spoke pretty openly in interviews from the start about how they wanted to really lean into the absurdity of how pop bands are frequently made (basically focus tested, mass produced, consumerist type shit, moulding the band members into cookie cutter shapes to appease the masses) so they literally created their own band members. So most knew it was just Damon trying something new, at the time it was deemed more of a pet project and I don't think people really saw it anything more than a one off experimental type thing, but here we are today and they're still as big as ever.
@@Spamhard Oh cool! Thanks for the info. Yeah, who would've thought they would become this huge...
@@noursarhan8695 No worries! Obviously that's just my own personal memory of it, I'd be interested to know if others had different experiences/commentary of it back then. I used to pretty obsessively follow them back in the day, so my personal experience on the reaction to them is based more on radio and music media's takes on them (from interviews and articles), rather than just a general population hearing them without background info.
I had Massive Attack's "Angel" as an audio tape single back in whenever year that was released, and there's a Blur remix on it that's super not very Blur-like at all and much more proto-Gorillaz sounding. So when I heard the guy behind this new Gorillaz band was the guy from Blur I wasn't super surprised since I'd heard him toy with similar ideas musically a few times before then (indeed, the video mentions "On Your Own" which is a good example... "Ambulance" is also a good example and could be my favourite Blur track honestly).
I'd also got used to the idea of bands expanding genre before then, what with being both super into discovering b-sides in general (often an indicator of any band's more experimental side), and also a big fan of Radiohead (even though with them I honestly overall prefer their more early-sounding guitary stuff).
@@wipsycripsy4170 No one said rap wasn't normal or even mentioned rap. Not really sure what you're getting at. OP just asked what the reaction was to Damon creating a different sound to what we were used to, which is a perfectly reasonable question seeing as Damon, at least in the mainstream, was mostly known for pop/inidie at the time, and Gorillaz was a newer sound coming from him.
I thought 2-D had eyes but he had 8 ball fractures in his eyes turning them black

I was 5 years old when it came out and I remember watching the music video with my mom, she loved it. We would wait for it to play on MTV every day. She died in September of that year and to this day I still keep on playing the music video at least once a week because of those moments.
This might be an "unpopular opinion" here but my favorite Gorillaz song is "Man Research (Clapper)".
It might not have the most coherent lyrics or whatever, but I always liked the beat to that song. It's very trippy and I love it! ❤
omg i thought i was the only one. it’s so great.
I didn't like Man Research when I first heard it, i always hit next when it came on. Then a few choice listens on LSD catapulted it to top 20 Gorillaz Songs status, and thats saying a lot. Special shout out to the Spacemonkeyz version of it too.

I can still very well remember seeing Clint Eastwood for the first time. It was the first time MTV released the video in holland, and I was immediately glued to the tube! It was so novel and so outstanding, especially to me, a ten year old boy drawing little comic strips and characters from morning till evening. So immediately Jamie Hewlett had this enormous influence throughout my teens: when I drew through classes, as I started doing graffiti, and when I studied at the arts academy. and not just in the style of drawing, but also in that it taught me to ever be playful, a bit rebellious and always trying to wonder at what I see visually through the day. I do not want to say that he is my idol, but I have a lot of respect for him and therefor for Damon Albarn for making this possible in my life.
@Max Boot, That was a great comment to read. I hope you're still making Art! Are you from Holland(The Netherlands), Dutch yes?
Fire Coming Out of the Monkeys Head for me as well. Dennis Hopper's storytelling is perfect for the apocalyptic story.
I enjoy the Demon Day's album a little too much
I'd love for my fave to be some deep cut, but "Feel Good Inc." is just a monster.

The way the band mixes story and character into their songs like with melancholy hills up beat music made by murdoc and the melancholic vocals by 2-D creates a sense of longing and listlessness that is can be hard to create.
The one thing Gorillaz has never been is predictable. Very good video.

it was never intended to be for kids
I still remember as a teen staying up to listen to BBC Radio 1 not long after the first albums release, just so I could record Murdoc's interview onto a tape to listen back to it. I've always been a huge fan of animation since I was little and the idea of a fully animated band, all with really unique personalities was just so appealing to me (Murdoc was my fave :P). I love this channel so much! Absolutely brilliant! One subject I think would be of interest would be the close proximity U.K punk and reggae had, with things like Don Letts djing at the Roxy, Bauhaus' clear dub inspiration and of course the 2 tone movement. For music that sounds - on the surface - so different, there are so many similarities, some of which can be seen in this video - even Murdoch has identified it! Ohh and my favourite song is Sound Check (Gravity)
I was only 11 when this song dropped but I clearly remember it constantly playing on all music channels. To be honest, I found the video a bit unsettling and thought the song was a bit repetitive, but fast forward to Plastic Beach and Gorillaz got me hooked! I would love to go back and explore some of their earlier works.

The first time I ever did acid as a teenager was with my best friend, his girlfriend and her best friend. We were at my best friends house which was perfect for tripping cause well.....it was a big house in a really nice neighborhood and he had this balcony in his room that opened up on the 2nd floor which if you looked out it at night you could see the tops of the houses and trees in the neighborhood with the moon's glow(and it looked like the whole wall opened up). I see why "Clint Eastwood" was the big single tho. it's got the Ennio Morricone-flavored hook, that five-beat cymbal crash thing (yeah my musical terminology sux), and the video introduces us to the band while "Tomorrow Comes Today" is more about London, imho. It seems to me like the two songs are in the same tempo but "Clint Eastwood" has more energy, "Tomorrow Comes Today" is more laid-back. All good.
Yeah, I think it's simpler and stronger. The drums and the melody are great. You can hear that sound in their music more than Clint Eastwood.
Clint Eastwood drags on for too long. I always skip it bc it's repetitive and almost 6 minutes 😬.
I'm not at all surprised by "the guy from Blur" as Damon is a genius.
also important is the reference of 2D using that moniker, is most likely a reference to the most consistent “face” of massive attack, Robert “3D” Del Naja. but of course he’s 2D because.......well because he’s literally 2D
Fantastic video. I'd definitely love to see a second part approaching Demon Days next!
favourite gorillaz track is On Melancholy Hill. perfect synthpop track.
I actually saw Gorillaz at the Philadelphia date of their first US tour. great set, never actually saw who was onstage because they played behind a screen with their silhouettes projected from behind. there was another screen above that showing cartoons.
it was a frustrating show, tho. they had no opening act, just a 2 hour disjointed DJ set. by the end everyone was sitting on the floor. I have never been more relieved to see the headliner.
Good way to start my day 👏
Tomorrow Comes Today was the very first Gorillaz track I ever heard and no matter how much I enjoy their other albums, I always end up coming back to it.
Your videos are incredibly well done. So much so that after they're over, Im sad.
Aside from Gorillaz, 13 is Blur's best album.
Overlooked masterpiece
I was today years old when I realised the name Gorillaz is a pun, as a group of gorillas is called a band
The way 2d describe noodles appearance was so iconic
This content insane good. Gorillaz will be forever one of my favorite bands.
I would love to see your perspective on the band Interpol, imo you will do an amazing research as always. Thank you so much for this!
I love Feel Good Inc. I will never get tired of that song.
My favorite song of theirs is Dirty Harry. It’s just so well made and I got the main riff drilled into my brain for weeks
My favorite Gorillaz song is "Stylo" the parts of Bobby Womack send shivers to my spine! Also the music video, Muscle cars roaring to an empty highway, Bruce Willis as a bounty hunter, i love that song!
But for getting some seratonin and feeling good is "Dare", Noodle is my favorite band member, i remember when the 19-2000 released i was a kid and i've always wanted to play that "video game" of 4 characters doing hot wheels stuff in a Buggy 😂
You perfectly brought back the feel of that first album. Subscribed.
We need to have more collabs with Del Tha Funkee Homosapian on Gorillaz songs. I would like them to do a full album with Del
My favourite songs are probably o green world, tranz and on meloncholy hill
I truly love these videos! The editing is eye-catching and I can see you put a lot of research into them. I really appreciate the fact you gave some proper backstory regarding the creators, especially when you pointed out the importance of Blur's artistic shift in the creation of what would, later on, become Gorillaz, as well as the main influences that made Damon want to take part in a project with less expectations from the public and more artistic freedom. Being a frontman in a rock group can be really tiring and limiting, it seems. I can see that Damon was disillusioned with that kind of fame, though I still think that Blur had something really valuable in their music, despite being, perhaps, misunderstood, in both their home country and the US where they sadly didn't even have that much of an impact. Gorillaz seem to have succeeded because they're a lot more accessible and stand out more with their "cartoonish" image and countless references to global pop culture and sounds. Again, kudos for making these videos, I loved every single one I've seen so far!
Oh and I don't have one particular favourite Gorillaz song, but Feel Good Inc. is the first one I've heard, like, ten years ago...so I'm really fond of that one (popular choice, I know. Though it's still a brilliant song, both musically and lyrically!)
