  • "So what's your gain, what's your advantage? (with living a life within the system)
Well, for two or three weeks you get to go to Maine or Vermont on vacation. Then it's back to the slave pen, back to the whip, back to the tyranny of doing that which in itself is really not worth my doing"
    Scott Nearing

I had the good fortune to meet Helen and Scott in the late 60's and they had a great influence on my life's goals and future development. Its too bad that that we hold sports figures and wall street executives in such high esteem when the true role models like Helen and Scott go largely unnoticed. If only we all shared their values just think what a wonderful country this would be to live in.

Wow, lucky you! I do know someone who met them in the late 70's, a Professor of Marine Biology called Stuart Hill and I am chuffed about that! That I know someone who knew the Nearing's but you went one step better!

+Richard Perry - wow thanks for sharing your story. I only just today found out about Scott Nearing through researching Peace Pilgrim (aka Mildred Lucette Norman Ryder), who is another hero of mine.

It's an absolute tragedy that this man's voice was never heard on a wider scale! His life is was one of unquestionable integrity. Familiarize yourself with his work and you won't be disappointed!

Amen. The Keepers of the System designed it so that his voice would be marginalized. He couldn't get another teaching job as a college, or university professor, ever again. He began practicing, writing and lecturing about holistic, organic living out of economic necessity.
They were rare human beings. The best.

There is something that is naturally strengthening and empowering about both personal and societal self-reliance and self-determination.. ..When all is said and done, it allows us to move beyond surviving physically, to flourishing, spiritually and emotionally. We Progress in a very pure sense of that word.. Perhaps it can be said that it is, in fact, an essential component of our greater Mission.

His "voice"...was, in fact, a rather common one for those of his era, wise and insightful, a distillation of qualitative life, the Nearing's were simply, tragically, of a very tiny minority that were articulate and vocal about it, sufficiently so that other souls, despairing from a less qualitative lifestyle were able to hear their message..

pragmatic idealist is rare, what's even more rare is they did what they said, they said what they did, Exactly. say and do don't go together normally in this planet, it's easier for human to lie, quit promise, exploit and slave others.

I have a bit of joke I share with folks when we talk about this sort of thing and survivalists, -ism, etc.. It goes somewhat like this:
"My grandmother was born in 1880's...You could drop her off in the middle of a wilderness, then pick her up from there a few months later and she will probably have put on some weight... And the second thing outta her mouth after she greets you will be "Come with me...I want to show you something.."

I have a nice pile of wood behind the servants quarters of my new Chateau, so I invite everyone to please pop over, bring your well sharpened saws, and I will let you saw it all up, and I will not charge you for the sun and the pleasure of it (however tempted I may be).

Aman of integrity and wisdom. This is a wonderful film produced by "Bullfrog" and is available to view through them, if desired.
I visited Forests Farms back in the 1990's with his wife, Helen Hearing. She was the nicest person and was a perfect hostess. Needless to say, I was changed by their writings and still adhere to their principles.
    Thanks for the clip!

They spent considerable time inviting people onto their homestead and showing them everything they knew about their life style and philosophy. They wrote books and gave lectures on a lot of different topics from construction methods to social issues.

Scott Nearing was a GREAT human being. He sacrificed his societal standing - committing class suicide - when he began writing and lecturing about the abysmal socioeconomic conditions of the so-called Urban/Inner City areas and the people (predominately Black) living in those areas.
Scott and Helen Nearing were two GREAT AMERICAN S/Heroes.

    • @dennisrowan1704
      @dennisrowan1704 Před 2 lety +3

Totally untrue. The Nearings gave four hours a day for their community. Scott fought for unions, and against child labor. That is why he was kicked out of his job as a professor at U of Penn. Scott Nearing is the father of Tenure. Living simply on the land so that others can live well is the antithesis of selfish. Dig a bit deeper and you will see what generous souls Scott and Helen were. I was lucky enough to have spent some time with them and they gave me more than just about any humans I have ever met.
