- "So what's your gain, what's your advantage? (with living a life within the system)
Well, for two or three weeks you get to go to Maine or Vermont on vacation. Then it's back to the slave pen, back to the whip, back to the tyranny of doing that which in itself is really not worth my doing"
Scott Nearing
I had the good fortune to meet Helen and Scott in the late 60's and they had a great influence on my life's goals and future development. Its too bad that that we hold sports figures and wall street executives in such high esteem when the true role models like Helen and Scott go largely unnoticed. If only we all shared their values just think what a wonderful country this would be to live in.
Wow, lucky you! I do know someone who met them in the late 70's, a Professor of Marine Biology called Stuart Hill and I am chuffed about that! That I know someone who knew the Nearing's but you went one step better!
+Richard Perry - wow thanks for sharing your story. I only just today found out about Scott Nearing through researching Peace Pilgrim (aka Mildred Lucette Norman Ryder), who is another hero of mine.
Proud to have this man as my ancestor.
so you too inherited $
It's an absolute tragedy that this man's voice was never heard on a wider scale! His life is was one of unquestionable integrity. Familiarize yourself with his work and you won't be disappointed!
Amen. The Keepers of the System designed it so that his voice would be marginalized. He couldn't get another teaching job as a college, or university professor, ever again. He began practicing, writing and lecturing about holistic, organic living out of economic necessity.
They were rare human beings. The best.
idle rich
I would read "The wisdom of Helen n Scott in the older issues of aTHE MOTHER EARTH NEWS.
There is something that is naturally strengthening and empowering about both personal and societal self-reliance and self-determination.. ..When all is said and done, it allows us to move beyond surviving physically, to flourishing, spiritually and emotionally. We Progress in a very pure sense of that word.. Perhaps it can be said that it is, in fact, an essential component of our greater Mission.
Thank you, Helen and Scott!
When i was 12 and 13 i spent 2 summers on my cousins lTe husbands horse farm in West Virginia. We were 5 miles from the nearest dirt road n i loved it n wish id stayed. I met hermits n drank spring water out of the side of the mountain so good it made your pecker hsrd. Fresh air n sunshine. I was n best shape of my life.
“All people on the planet are children, except for a very few. No one is grown up except those free of desire" Rumi
He's got it right. Hope I can be living like that soon!
His "voice"...was, in fact, a rather common one for those of his era, wise and insightful, a distillation of qualitative life, the Nearing's were simply, tragically, of a very tiny minority that were articulate and vocal about it, sufficiently so that other souls, despairing from a less qualitative lifestyle were able to hear their message..
A VERY INTELLIGENT MAN ! WHO WILL FOLLOW HIS EXAMPLE ?
Wisdom. ❤
My leaf ear had a thoroughly good time listening to him.
We are over the tipping point now Scott. Hell on earth has arrived.
Yes but the purpose of life isn’t found in just being self sufficient. But what good you provide to others too.
pragmatic idealist is rare, what's even more rare is they did what they said, they said what they did, Exactly. say and do don't go together normally in this planet, it's easier for human to lie, quit promise, exploit and slave others.
I have a bit of joke I share with folks when we talk about this sort of thing and survivalists, -ism, etc.. It goes somewhat like this:
"My grandmother was born in 1880's...You could drop her off in the middle of a wilderness, then pick her up from there a few months later and she will probably have put on some weight... And the second thing outta her mouth after she greets you will be "Come with me...I want to show you something.."
found this the good life book somehow.Worth checking out. Also didn't even think to build with field stone good stuff.
I just found it on a shelf of the local library in Abbeville Alabama and have fallen in love with the Nearings ideals ❤️ I've been looking to live off the land for years and moved here to try my start at it...wish me well 🌺
Wonderful!!!. Unknowing I am doing it right!!. Although in Genesis God said we must rule over the creation.. I am grateful to experince my daily living very much the same as the example given by these people.
Saw a link to this on permie.com this morning. I swear this is me in a past life.
How little has changed in the West.. this Man talks the most sense.
a rich kid - sure be born to rich family -thats the way
His clothes, wheelbarrow, and saw, all came from factories run from cities by companies with office buildings in cities.
That doesn't make a single one of his words less true.
Both of these comments are true.
Farm life is the good life! :o)

The volume is too low. Other Scott Nearing videos on other channels seem just fine. I don't know what the problem on this one video is, but if it is on your end, please fix it. Thanks!
How can I watch the entire video? I'm reading their books right now :)
I have a nice pile of wood behind the servants quarters of my new Chateau, so I invite everyone to please pop over, bring your well sharpened saws, and I will let you saw it all up, and I will not charge you for the sun and the pleasure of it (however tempted I may be).
I'm a Scott wannabe. Need a Helen wannabe.
No sound, not audible.
You were probably using only the right speaker. The left one is the only one with sound.
Aman of integrity and wisdom. This is a wonderful film produced by "Bullfrog" and is available to view through them, if desired.
I visited Forests Farms back in the 1990's with his wife, Helen Hearing. She was the nicest person and was a perfect hostess. Needless to say, I was changed by their writings and still adhere to their principles.
Thanks for the clip!
Im resfec granfather
Scott Nearin was 100 big deal.
he needs to leran to speak
This comment 😅
What a selfish couple. They lived for decades and only thought of themselves. What a sad and unfruitful life.
They spent considerable time inviting people onto their homestead and showing them everything they knew about their life style and philosophy. They wrote books and gave lectures on a lot of different topics from construction methods to social issues.
Scott Nearing was a GREAT human being. He sacrificed his societal standing - committing class suicide - when he began writing and lecturing about the abysmal socioeconomic conditions of the so-called Urban/Inner City areas and the people (predominately Black) living in those areas.
Scott and Helen Nearing were two GREAT AMERICAN S/Heroes.
Totally untrue. The Nearings gave four hours a day for their community. Scott fought for unions, and against child labor. That is why he was kicked out of his job as a professor at U of Penn. Scott Nearing is the father of Tenure. Living simply on the land so that others can live well is the antithesis of selfish. Dig a bit deeper and you will see what generous souls Scott and Helen were. I was lucky enough to have spent some time with them and they gave me more than just about any humans I have ever met.
people like him prolonged the vietnam war
nice to have RICH ancestors so you dont have to WORK
