- "If you don't know how to save, you should at least join a sou-sou"! This lesson from his childhood has stuck with Carl, a Flatbush native on a mission to deliver financial literacy and empowerment to those who need it most as, "The Sou-Sou Man". In this talk, he is saving communities one economic plan at a time! Carl Joseph-Black is a Law Student at the City University of New York School of Law and the Founder of RaisingBenjamin.com, a website dedicated to increasing the wealth of young black millennials by sharing insights on Capital Markets and Wealth Management that's as easy to learn as a Drake verse. After obtaining his Bachelor's degree in Finance from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania in 2011 he began his career at JPMorgan. Through his work, he found the need for financial literacy and empowerment among minority communities. This inspired him to create #RaisingBenjamin. He’s a life-long Brooklynite who currently works as an Associate at SEB Group in their Securities Division. During his spare time, he likes to sip Kombucha while reading the Wall Street Journal and advises local businesses on strategy. If he isn't doing those things he's probably watering his plants or listening to Drake somewhere. For anyone who came to this video researching sou sou because you were asked to join one to earn $4,000 a month - please understand this is NOT the same thing. He is referring to the traditional sou sou in which you do not need to bring people into the circle and you do not make money from sou sou. Traditional sou sous are interest free lending programs. That’s why he compares it to pooled income programs.
So you're saying (subliminally) that the $4,000 monthly pay-out where you gifted (donated) $500 initially is a scam?

Resume Byron I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a scam. But it’s empty promises of fortune. Just as Tony Mosley in the comments said once the people you bring in decide to pull out - that’s it for you.
I just want it to be clear that the program where you bring people in and make $4,000 per month is not the same as this. Sou Sou is a community loan program. You pay to enter the “pot” and then each person that is participating receives a lump some that they pay back in portions either weekly/bi-weekly . Thats what the guy in the video is describing. It’s easier than the bank because there’s no interest and the money is held by a trusted person in the community. Access to the lump some allows people to make down payments on homes, pay off cars etc.

My Trinidad parents built and furnished their home in the 70’s by being in multiple sou sous. Very common in the Caribbean.

I just joined a Sou sou savings club. Very excited! I informed family and friends thinking that they would listen and join in. It's really sad that a lot of people don't even take time to listen or am open minded. Instead, the majority of people said the same thing. "Let me know when you get your money". Smh.
So sad but so true! Looking crazy until they see the 8k in two months and wish they would have started when you told them!

I'm having trouble understanding if i'm saving the same amount of money every month wouldn't it benefit me to have access to it all the time in case an emergency comes up instead of waiting 3,4, 5 months or longer for my turn to come back around? Or do I set this up after I have established an emergency fund?

I'm in a Sou Sou. I'm loving it. The hardest part was getting two people to join. I understand the entire concept. I will rather take a risk with giving money to my people versus letting the banks, credit card & student loan companies rob you with their APR/interest rates. I will no longer be taking out any loans.

I am finding that just filling spots with WHOEVER is NOT ENOUGH. You have to find people who are connected to people, that can bring 2, 4, 6 PLUS people in when they join. Otherwise the flower is going to stall. When people don't bring 2 that will bring 2 and so on, it will slow down or stop. Choose wisely and let people know whats needed upfront! 🙏🏽
Which is why our village don't bring people in just on that premise. It has to be about Community and servicing each other.

How long did it take? Do you basically have to rely on everyone as the flower develops and breaks off?
Elise Craig I joined June 14th. July 5th is my water date so 4 weeks. The key is finding 2 people that will find 2 people and so forth. After the earth position, the flower split and I could see that the 2 people I brought in, essentially brought in the 4 people that would bring in the 8 people that would pay me now that I am in the water. Each person is responsible for 2 people! If someone doesn’t get their people, the flower stalls and people are short on their payouts. And if they still don’t get 2 people, by the time they get to the water there is no money to receive.

A Sou Sou is different from the flower blessings or the blessing circles. A Sou Sou is a micro-saving and does NOT require recruitment of anyone, just a group of individuals who are trustworthy and disciplined in saving. The flower circle or blessings circles are all pyramid models that are based on recruitment and therefore fall apart when you are not able to recruit new members.
THANK YOU!!!! These people are unfortunately being misled. A sousou is not the same as those supposed "blessing circles." People really have to do their research.
I just joined one 2 weeks ago and am excited for my payout in a week, but more importantly, I'm excited about the possibilities--paying down debt, building wealth, helping my community, family and friends. It's just so tough finding likeminded people to come on board with me. I am a part of a very trustworthy group--all about team, helping each other get their two people---no one is left out in the cold because they can't find their 2. Not only that, but encouraging words are sent out daily and financial literacy offered as well. So, I"m grateful to be a part of this group. Its unfortunate that people are not taking advantage of things like this. it's a great way to earn extra cash but a lot people are afraid to join. I joined one on the 7th of this month, I made it into the water on the 27th so far I've got $3500, I'm now waiting on my last $500 payment for my flower to close. one of my coworkers started about 2 months ago he now has 3 flowers and just got pay from all 3. I'm starting my second flower on Sunday🤸♀️.

Why don’t we have investment plans for sou sou. Instead of giving everyone all their money back have them keep 10-20% in the group, have business plans for them to invest for themselves or the group. Like busying a franchise or real estate.

Mathematically, what you're saying makes absolutely no sense.
The pot is $5
5 ppl....physically circulate $4
($1 per person x 5ppl = $5. THEN, you minus your $1.
You really don't have to pay the (day/week/month) that you have to collect. Therefore, each person actually physically puts in $4)
Let us use a week for example...
Week 1....Mildred gets her $4> $5-$1(The $1 that Midred would've put in.) However, she must now make sure EACH person she borrowed the $1 from gets their money back. Where is the investment?
Week 2... John gets his $4 > $5-$1 (The $1 that John would've put in)
Week 3... Paul
Week....4 Winston
Now.... explain where the investment is when each person is taking ANYTHING extra out of the pot!

I've listened to this video and I get that his foundation for investing came from Sous sous. But he went on further to explain being more effective through crowdfunding in order to make a greater impact with investments. Am I the only one that got that? Why are most of the comments about joining a sous sous? He explained the limitations of it.

I am right there with you. I think the reason people are talking about sou sou’s is probably because of their success with them. They work when that investment is personal, and a great means to a quicker, higher dividend.
Gerri Drain, you are correct. What he described from his youthful years was a true family-controlled Sous-sous. The So-called modern day Sous-sous, also known as the Flower Loom, Gifting Program, etc., are illegal and highly risky. His talk moved the focus to "crowd funding" as a more efficient tool to raising capital for legitimate business ventures. Unlike the modified sous-sous of today that many are turning to for "quick" money returns for individual gains.
I agree. He should have spent more time on crowdfunding. What most people are commenting about are not traditional sous sous. These gifting circles rely heavily on recruiting. In traditional sous sous there was no recruiting and levels.

The main difference between a Sou-Sou and blessing flower or loom is the fact the number of ppl is fixed. With a sou-sou there is fixed number of ppl who agree to contribute a certain amount of money on agreed upon schedule (week, bi-weekly, monthly). A sou-sou doesn’t require you to recruit more ppl to get back your initial investment.

Kaliah Nash I just joined 5/25, so I’m almost a week in. So this isn’t a scam. Just learn the fine print. Don’t join unless you have your 2 ppl ready to go. Not having your ppl is the frustrating part, since everyone wants to see you get paid 1st, and everyone else thinks it’s a scam. So have your 2 ppl, if it’s loved ones, have their 2 ppl etc etc, cause everyone thinks they can just do their $500 and get paid in a month.

I was invited to join a SouSou but I am a big skeptic. Anyway, I'm in an investment club (was sheptical about that as well), have been in one for years and I can get my funds when I need them. Club members have used their funds to buy cars, put down payments on houses, paid for their children's education, etc. I'm not saying that SouSou(s) don't work but I got started with just $25 per month in the club. I have learned about investing, learned how to evaluate companies and have increased my assets significantly. Be careful out there all.

The Gift Tax. If you give people a lot of money, you might have to pay a federal gift tax. But the IRS also allows you to give up to $15,000 in 2019 to any number of people without facing any gift taxes, and without the recipient owing any income tax on the gifts. Take out banker/middle man and its legal. Calculated risk by community i guess

It's terrible that people started calling the recent ponzi model a susu. They are not the same. The craziest part is that "Flower" or "Bloom" or "Blessing" isn't new either. It resurfaces every few years and a lot of people toward the bottom get scammed out of money.

Thank you for sharing, I have been successful in network marketing so understand residual income. Once you understand residual income, the old model of trading time for money doesn't work all that well. Learning about the modern day sousou is a great idea

You all will do better pooling your money together with family members, going to an investment company, and buying a mutual fund or a Vanguard Fund where there's interest to be compunded and it's legally regulated. It takes longer, but a much better return.
The point is in a sousou, everyone's money is not legally protected. It's considered to be a gift and not a loan. You put upwards to $500 in and then you have to go find two other people? Sounds like a pyramid to me, and those rarely work out, except for the one who's holding the money. If someone runs off with it, you're out of luck, again because it's considered gift and not a loan. A short-term loan won't catch up to the 400-year headstart you referred to, but hey🤷🏽♀️.

Warning....only do this with people you know and trust. If they cant come to your house and spend a night, then dont put them on your flower. This is a true blessing for serious and trustworthy people you know. People call it a scam because they did this with strangers and this organization strongly disagrees with that method.

So does the flower ever split? Someone told me once she was in the water position and blessed, she then has to regift $500 seven days later but she doesn’t have to bring 2 people on again. I’m confused and just trying to understand. I would’ve been in the water position this coming sunday but the 2 people I was bringing in couldn’t find 2 people so they backed out.

Of course you own the home after it's paid off. You have to pay property tax because you own a property, in a neighborhood, in a city. In order for that neighborhood or city to survive is through 'property taxes'; these taxes are used in the government of the city to help provide for lighting, roadwork, community services including public schools, public transportation, etc. Don't let the fear of property taxes stop you from paying down your home. With a paid off home, you have equity, you could sell the home and very likely earn money due to the increase in value of your neighborhood.
@@ContessaRobins My home is paid off. I reached out to my county and found a program that if you are a certain age you can have real estate taxes deferred due to age and financial standing. So literally I own my home outright and I do not pay real estate taxes! Which is great as I have paid for many, many years!

If you have to bring people in, it is not a Sousou. A sousou has a set number of people and you only get your payout once per round.
So what are they doing?
The revised sou sou has you bring in 2 people each to increase the payout amount.

Yes that is true. Always best to get 2 ppl before you join. Makes it easier. But the longer you have to wait for payout.

In a way, but most likely as been going on for countless years is you would spend it. So putting that money into a pool and getting a big payout can change your life.

The old way of doing Sou Sou died out due to reckless and selfish behaviors of people. But there were NEVER any recruiting of any kind. You get in when it starts and no one else is able to until everyone gets their payouts. And then it gets restarted again. Simple. People and their ways makes it difficult. Period

@@angelajenkins6053 a real Susu you don't invite people in order to get payouts. Everyone pays and you get a payout. Like, 10 people pay in a pot, then one person gets a payout after every time all 10 people put their money in.
That's how I understand the traditional sou sou to work. No recruitment. I also have yet to see how the math works for some that are getting paid after less then a month.

It is a gift giving process. If you choose to put the funds in a money market to gain interest your choice. Most people who join this process are looking to pay off debt, put their kids through college or open a business without a loan.
