Arsenal are getting bigger. They’re recruiting bigger and preferring taller, more athletic players. Declan Rice and Kai Havertz are both over six foot tall, and Arteta prefers to play centre-back Benjamin White at right back.
So why is Mikel Arteta doing this?
Jon Mackenzie explains.

Havertz was pressing in a way I havent seen from Jesus or Nketiah.
Not aggressive but intelligent, constantly checking his surroundings and shifting himself every few seconds.
Going to be very intriguing how Arteta uses this squad.
Yes, that’s encouraging but we saw plenty of that from Jesus last season, was literally all over the pitch
That is his best trait dont ask him to finish with his feet tho
In 2020-2021, despite the fact that Havertz and Werner didn't score alot of goals, they were SO good at harassing the opponents, forcing mistakes, preventing attacks from even getting going.
Chelsea were actually worse the next season when Werner was less consistently in the team and Havertz was worse because he didn't have as much support.
I think he will shine for a strong Arsenal unit, especially if they get him back into midfield
As a Chelsea fan just let me tell you that Havertz' movement on the pitch was NEVER the problem.
If you are unlucky with how Arteta sets it all up it'll be more of the same: Havertz has a good run of games between January and March and scores about 7 goals all season.
If you are lucky, however, you are in for a treat.
That is not how I saw it, but I'll try to take this into account next time I watch him
When saliba got injured, i have seen arsenal fans saying that their season was over, and they were right. Saliba was so crucial to arsenal because he was the last player in the defense, he was the sweeper who must have the positional awereness to be able to make the last second tackles that holding cant do and magalhes wasnt the best at
Sound's to me like his importance is simular to Araujos at Barcelona. Did Saliba development improve that rapid? 🤔
@@flyingaviator8158 exactly and they play the same position too (not against madrid when araujo plays lb), they both play rcb then invert to the central cb position. Also both players have a cb as fullback on their side (as rb)
@@agostonpad4183 I always find the similarities between Xavi and Arteta interesting. Obviously Arsenal has more money, but in terms of tactics they are very similar.
@@flyingaviator8158the loans in France definitely helped his development a lot some times young, players just need Time
And Saliba on the aerial part was their key man, when he was out Arsenal were suspect to set pieces
Excellent video. If I remember the elite Arsenal Invincibles, that was an incredibly physically imposing team, with the likes of Vieira, Henry, Bergkamp, Campbell, Gilberto all big players. Arsenal were intimidating in the tunnel partly because of the reputation of the team, but also because of the size of many of the players. I'm happy to see a taste of this again after the recruitment this summer. In certain positions on the pitch, particularly in the premier league, being physically intimidating is important.
Yeah Arsenal went into decline when Arsenal Wenger ceased to care about the physicality and mentality of the players, only their technical attributes. The invincibles had everything; physical, mental, and technical.
Invincible team were giants. Each one of them was physical first and all.
@@BGeezy4sheezynot really. Wenger technical team would have won a league if they had a competent CB and GK. Technical team also had to compete with Chelsea as well as united
Pep didn't start with all centre back line up. It was Mikel who did it first last season before Pep adopted it. Give where credit's due
He has used center backs at fullback positions often far before that though. Pavard is a good example.
Even if you say this, it is clear Arteta is copying Pep by introducing greater physical and bringing taller and bigger players into the starting 11
@@judgejudyandexecutioner.5223Has Pavard ever played under Pep?
@@2rude307Bayern
@@joyboy79512 Concept of greater physical players has always been ever present in football. It's trend that ebbs and flows. Arteta when he came in started imposing physicality and duel winning as key components
You simply can't say Arteta copies Pep. Football evolves. Pep learned from Cruyff, and he from Rinus Michel. Do you say they copy each other? Of course not
But Pep is a generational coach and his influence in the game cannot be diminished. That's true
just a correction Arteta "started" the trend of playing 4 CBs at the back vs Liverpool and iirc Pep even said the 4 cb thing is something he learned this season.
did Arteta actually play 4 centrebacks for tactical reasons or he had no fullbacks at the time?? just curious
@@st_ates_2563 it was when Zinny was injured iirc(also why we didn't play as hard into inverting our LB). That's why pep said he learned something new bc Mikel was forced to play that style and he saw how it worked vs Liverpool and Klopp (his fiercest comp for years).
Mikel had to do it partly because of injury but also because he knew Liverpool's wingers are the main problem point so we had to play much more defensively sound and had our full backs(white, who is traditionally a CB, and tomo, who can play cb) play much more defensively against guys like Salah. And were running haggard to get back and mark properly.
Pep 100% took it and perfected it because he honestly a genius himself and is able to drill amazingly, but also because he has more talent(it's why he brought it Gvardiol). He found out that the only way to neutralize Salah, Saka, martinelli, and the like is to play someone much more defensively sound. So City had the perfect players for that already. Arsenal meanwhile brought in Timber to do that and also play more progressive. It's a tough role because you have to cover so much space and why Pep, and now Mikel, are prioritize depth in their back 4. They need players that can slot in at least 2 position in the back 4 to be able to constantly rotate and keep legs fresh for when they have to run around defending against the best wingers.
@@st_ates_2563no, he had Tierney on the bench who’s a natural left back. He played with 4 CBs for tactical reasons
@@DawnofIsai it goes beyond that Liverpool game though. Arteta played Xhaka at left back and Calum Chambers at RB for some games in the 20/21 season in Europe
Squad depth is key for CL football, and Havertz and Timber bring that experience. Will be interesting to see how Raya and Ramsdale compete. I think before the business end Arteta might be forced to turn to one keeper only, rotating both throughout the season may not be good for coordination with the defence
6 games in the CL before back to the Europa League will make little difference to Artetas signings
Arsenal bottled the league after leading for 247 days.
@@CB-ns6sywe also lost Saliba for the last 9 games of the season but let’s ignore that…imagine Liverpool losing Van Djik for the last 9 games of a title charge and playing Joe Gomez.
joe Gomez is still so much better than rob holding, these deluded trolls won’t even recognise we were playing with 10 men
Also, holding needs to be out of the door by now
@@CB-ns6sy That's about 93% of the season, are you sure??
I hope trossard doesn’t fall out of favor. He brings a great change of pace and creativity in the attack but his defensive capabilities are lacking
Shows the majority of fans knowledge when they say he should play as 8 lol, he is perfect as he is used now as an attacking sub, he can change the attack when we need a goal but we can’t expect him to press and battle l like xhaka or rice
For certain games you can accept his defensive failings. He’s so damn creative. He can really do everything in an attacking phase as a forward

Find the Havertz-Jesus analysis a bit reductive: Gabriel Jesus is one of the most physically imposing strikers despite his size, he wins headers like it's nothing and harries and harrasses centre backs like nobody else
Very true
Doesn’t score goals though
Don't overrate Gabriel he didn't score many goals as a nine there's a reason why City sold him
Edu needs to find the receipts for Havertz and Jesus to get a refund and use the £110m he wasted on the clowns to sign Harry Kane before a big UCL winning club do
Havertz is better at aerial duels tho.
I remember a friend of mine saying this exact thing as we were watching the Community Shield and he's not even a football fan. Arsenal look bigger physically than they did last season, even with players like Timber and just more patient on and off the ball.
Haaland and De Bruyne single-handedly tearing us apart for 50 minutes in April is one reason that immediately comes to mind. The only time we were physically dominated last season.
Definitely not the only time. 2nd half at Anfield and the game against Forest instantly come to mind
@@littleboy1273 Dominated in only 3 games yet haven't won anything in 3 years loooooool

Arsenal will bamboozle teams in UCL this season. I won’t be surprised if they actually win it. Last season outside of PL they were not deploying a strong squad but this season it is going to be so much different. Arsenal ain’t banter no more. I hope they have a great season.
Win the ucl? I mean, I get being optimistic about arsenal, but winning the ucl? Come on man lol. I'd say winning the league is far more realistic.
Look at what happened to napoli last year, people were saying that they have a good chance of winning the ucl and that they were one of the favorites etc, in the end they got destroyed by ac milan in the quarter finals
arteta i can see is trying to make us better defensively and more tactically astute. He knows that defensively is what let us down towards the end. Liverpool were like us playing great football but only won the pl when they defended better and were grinding out results
Tactically cute?
if i preview all the transfer so far, i have to say, Arsenal make the best signing, Rice, Timber, Havertz are all amazing transfer, as they not only signing what they missed last season but they signed a top class players. If they are healthy, they should won at least a trophy, specially since Man City just lost Gundongan and Mahrez two of very important players last season.

You need a wing back in the wing back position. Mitoma ran circles around Ben White when Arsenal lost to Brighton last season.
Arsenal forcing City to build up on the right due to a slight weaknesses on that side shows the need for Gvardiol. This will open more options for City and create balance. City can now build up from the left or right.

So many of these fans were questioning arteta's decisions and trolling anyone who was talking about havertz's height advantage during the match. If only people were more intelligent...

Great pronunciation of Haaland and Ødegaard. Sincerely, a Norwegian
Now I see why they are signing David Raya, the goalkeeper is good at spraying those long passes.
New rules allowing more physical contact (which is fine but also clear fouls) means you need bigger more physical side.
Wait a minute. Wasnt Arteta the first do play with 4 CBs at the back against Liverpool? Tomiyasu played on the left and White on the right
Arteta pressing to direct the next movement of the ball. Thats how you move the ball without having the ball. People complaining Haverts not pressing aggreesively, that to avoid over committing that lead to lost the shape of pressing structure as a team. The weakness is Rob Holding lol. Man City: have defensive options of Rodri, Stones, Dias, Akanji, Ake, and Gvardiol who have all played at CB within the last year.
Arsenal: I want that.
I support Arsenal but Ake is very good.
Copying is best form of flattery. Arsenal want to be the best team and learning the best, implementing what they do is best way to get there. This squad look very promising once it’s complete. Young hungry and tactically flexible which what most of Man City success is built on.
Who the hell doesn't want good defenders that can all play and rotate?!
The funds are the problem. Arsenal spending this much is the biggest story here.
It seems that Arsenal owners finally identified a right coach and just gave him everything he needed.
Arteta coached that City team. His vision is bound to be similar.
I love it because when Arsenal landed timber I immediately checked his height to make sure he was above 6’. Having big defenders is important if you want to beat the Haalands of the world

Declan Rice understands the assignment
Win nothing at Arsenal just like every Arteta signing hasn't
I think you missed the point with this title...maybe I am with you in case of Havertz but I think its temporary.... I don't see any size or physical advantage of Rice over Xhaka (both 6'1'' and same strength) ... Timber is only 1'' taller than Zinchenko (and still undersized defender 5'10'') if he needs size, he has Tomiyasu of 6'2'' ... and Man City matchup didn't show any size advantage. do you think any of those will help against Brentford? it ain't about size.
The title is simplifying it, it’s not just about height but overall physical profile. Rice is far more athletic than Xhaka, Timber is far more athletic and stronger than Zinchenko
It's not just height, The physical presence is there. Timber is a stronger profile and he bullies attackers with his strength, something that zinny can't do. Rice for xhaka is unique, rice has a way of interrupting passes before they are complete and he's faster to intercept compared to xhaka was. He's stronger and faster

No he is promising. Elite coaches aren't just bright and good coaches. They have the X factor that instils belief. End of last 2 seasons that was missing. Arteta looked list at times on touchline. Young so time. It's innate in some but if your smart enough you can learn it to an extent.

Problem with Havertz is that he doesn't score enough. He does score important goals. But overall, not enough.
I thought this too but tbh, Jesus was our most important player at the start of last season and he wasn’t scoring and no arsenal fan really cared. It’s what he did off ball that lead to our form spike. I would have been fine if Jesus kept doing that and never scored a goal all year actually. Similarly, Havertz could end up being very valuable in his hold up play. Personally I think the perfect striker for arsenal right now is Giroud. Girouds strength is hold up play, making something out of arial crosses and offloading. When Giroud played for us we never played to these strengths but now our style needs it. Giroud is old now but Havertz can do all this.
I dont think Arteta bought him to score goals at all. Arteta admires his all around play and adaptability.
