- In this episode of RIO's "How To Fly Fish" Chris Walker talks about fly fishing for carp. Though not everybody's choice as a target species for fly fishers, carp are notoriously fickle to deceive, hard fighters, and can grow very large. In addition, carp are not adversely affected by hot weather (as trout are), and can be found in far more locations than trout. In short, they are an ideal species for the fly fisher to chase.
In this film Chris talks about what flies to fish, how to fish them, what kind of water carp like to inhabit, and what gear to use when chasing carp. Anyone thinking about fly fishing carp will find all the information they will need here.
RIO's "How To Fly Fish" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

I really like this video. So much well presented information in just 10 minutes.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...
Absolutely.... one of the best videos like this I've seen...
What kind of net are you using in this video
Stellar!
I caught my first carp on the fly 3 years ago and have been hooked (pun intended) ever since.
Trout and Bass have taken a backseat since.
The host here knows his stuff.
They are a great species - so under estimated by most fly fishers!!! Glad you enjoyed the episode, and thanks a lot for your comment.
Excellent video, this guy is an excellent instructor and presenter, not a loud mouth like so many YT vidiots. Stayed on topic, presented the information we need, and even gave us a good idea of the problems we may encounter and how to overcome. Well done Chris.
Glad you found it enjoyable!
A white puff fly is a killer for carp as it imitates a cotton wood seed pod . It’s a go to fly on the lower green and also works great on the Gunnison in or around the town of Delta Colorado
Wow!! Rio has a way of putting together videos that always hit the nail on the head of the subject they are covering. Thanks for one of the most professional fly fishing videos I've watched. lots of info that made perfect sense and the fishing sequence was fun and informative for all levels of fly fishermen.
Thank you!
By far the best video on the topic I’ve seen yet. Most well presented, to the point, detailed and entertaining!
Appreciate it! Glad you found it useful.
That was a really excellent presentation. You are a natural narrator. Nice work
Chris Walker is the man! Great video.
No doubt!
I never tried to catch carp on a fly rod before, looks like a new challenge for this summer, Thanks!
Very complete video for a very “unusual” sport fish, thank you Rio!
Just watched this again. Thanks RIO very cool
Thanks!
It was one of the best videos that I have watched about fly fishing for carp. The information on the flies & rod selection was great. Thanks
So nice to see a video that goes through the whole thought process and trial and error. Very informative.
Excellent info - thanks for putting this out!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...
Spot on! Excellent tips Chris! I accidentally caught a few big carp on 4wt when White bass fishing a couple years ago. What a fun fight! Now they’re one of my #1 target fish right along with lunker Largemouth. Really enjoy your videos and products Rio. Keep up the great work. Thanks a lot!👍👌🎣
Thanks Charlie, glad you enjoyed it...
Love it, so much potential for a very challenging and picky sport fish. Great presentation, absolutely a template piece of work for any professional or you-tuber to look at it carefully.
So much valuable info to be watched only once.
Thank you Rio and Chris please keep it up ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...
Great instruction! Thankyou for doing this!
great video about my favorite urban fish in NYC
Hooked my first for a few seconds, can’t wait to land one
Great video!!!!!!!
Excellent presentation! Thanks for clearly covering all elements; 😊I love carping on my 5-wt. rod!
great video! I recently found out that there are carp in my area and I'm excited to fish for them, but I have absolutely no experience in the field of carp fishing. this video was very informative and answered all the questions I had about targeting carp on the fly.
Good luck in your endeavor!
Great video. Very informative
Thanks!
Great video - thanks Chris
This is a stellar video. Thank you for this excellent, well presented information.
It looks like Chris uses a humble composite/plastic Redington Crosswater reel. It’s got a drag system. Who needs expensive gear. Pretty cool.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...

You're welcome!!!
Excellent vid, just starting to target, thanks.
Get em'!
Excellent video!
Glad you liked it!
Great Video . In my ponds here I fish many times with the fly for carp. Montanas Working great ! Greetings from Germany
Couldn't agree with Fario anymore. I was just out at a job site today and have been seeing a bunch of large carp lately, I guess getting ready to spawn, I knew folks fly fished for carp and it sounds like so fun to catch a fish that size, and they really are super pretty fish. So I snuck my rod to work, got the work done, then hung around to try and catch one, and holly cow! So hard to catch them 😵 hahaha. I really appreciate this video, so well presented, fella presenting and camera operator did such a good job, and now I'm super pumped to get back out there 👍 professionally done RIO, love your products and muchos muchos gracias!
Sweet! love the fact you are using a natural style pattern not bread or dog biscuit!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it... No dog biscuit or bread flies here!!
Great Rep!
you did a good job I have had them break 10 and 12 lb mono/flouro before. Most mine have been on a fast moving river so the fish pluss the current ad a lot of pressure. and you have to fight to keep them out of snags.
Nice video. I've never fished for carp before but when I do I think I'll have a fighting chance!
Good luck with it when you do...
Excellent content 👌 really enjoyed this 🐟
Thanks, Cary. Glad you liked it
net flip at 9:45 was ELITE
Thanks for the info. Great video. I'm gonna target them here this summer in SC. Should be fun!
Good luck!
awesome video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it...
This was great. I live about a mile from a local lake that for some reason they have completely failed at managing it as a fishery with the bass. I was out in my boat and finally found carp suspended about submerged trees...time to get set up and start carp hunting.
Good luck!
Good stuff. Carp was the first larger species my brother and I would catch in the neighbours pond when we where Kids. Back then it was with conventional rods. Now that i'm a fly fisher, i'm really keen on catching them on a fly.
It's super fun and technical! Great challenge. Good luck.
Great video!
Wow I was surprised when he released it. In my area, you’re required to kill them.
one of the best Rio videos ive seen
what net was you using
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. It was a Fishpond net
Love love love fly fishing for carp huge fight in em
Nice Video - just started targeting carp and your spot one - they are pretty tricky to catch, spooky, and fight hard...harder than a trout...
They are tons of fun!
Chris excellent presentation very clear and to the point. Quick question: what type net is that? Thanks for your help.
It's a fishpond nomad series!
Great vid man. 2024 is the year i land a carp on a fly!!!! Time to go tie some flies!!!
NICE! Good luck!
Enjoyed the video and tips. Been wanting to try carp to since I don’t get to chase redfish as often as I’d like. And, What size hooks for the flies?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it... The fly sizes ranged from 6's to 10's
What is the brand of flies used?
What about the models?
Thank you!
Great video, thanks for the info. I live near a large area that gets flooded every year in the spring and I see lots of large carp that seem to be feeding right against the grassy banks when the water is coming up. They are nosed into the bank and seem to be aggressively feeding. I know it might be impossible to answer this question but what would your hunch be on what they would be eating and what flies to use? I know this year when it starts to happen I can wade in and look but I am keen to try to get a carp and want to make sure I have some flies ready to go. Cheers.
Great question! Our hunch during a flood season would probably be worms that are flooded out of their normally dry homes. Also, generally they are a good choice for carp. They could also be feeding on other aquatic species disturbed by the change in water like nymphs or crayfish. Try one of RIO's Red Hot Worms, or Cray Crays. Hope this helps!
@@RIOPRODUCTS Awesome, thanks for getting back to me
@@mikewelch4673 , The weeds would be dry? and dying? the carp are staging and feeding by rooting the dead weed and insects/worms .
For me a beadhead crystal wollybugger in size 10 had been effective along with small brown beadhead wollybugger with rubber legs .
The technique is to get the fly in the zone slowly and let it be on the bottom and gently raise it as the carp suck /stir up the bottom as if the fly rose up from the path rooted/stirred by. the carp, the carp will immediately take the fly .
The should only be raise till the carp's eye level just an inch or two .
I anticipate the rooting path and pre-plant the fly
Couldn’t have picked an easier place to show how to do it! I live right next to this particular reservoir, they are extremely aggressive in there I use craw and damsel patterns they also eat lots of minnow patterns in there. My profile picture came from there also. Lol
Great to hear!
Near the end of the vid you tied 2 flies . What knots dit you use,how did you tie them
9:22 holy cow what a technique
It is a good trick!
What size hooks on the damselfly and woolly bugger?
What does tippet do . What's the difference between leader and mainline
I have a 4 weight fly rod , would it be a wast of time to try for carp on that or should I buy a heavier 8 eight weight as most seem to use those.
A 4 weight is definitely too light, these fish are strong! An 8 weight is a solid option.
Question for Chris Walker, can you forward over that damsel fly nymph recipe?
Would a Thomas and Thomas 6wt euronymph rod with a mono rig be better for this as it would create a gentler landing?
Only difficulty there would be if you have to make a longer cast, but try it and let us know how it works!
What are your opinions on fiberglass rods for carp?
Really fun fight on a glass rod! Definitely prefer modern glass for it's accuracy.
Dude, it looks like you're in Utah! Are you? I live in Davis county.
This was filmed in Idaho, it definitely looks similar!
I am writing from Turkey. Can you help me with Carp fly? What would you recommend as a fly?
Always depends on the fishery but to give you some pattern ideas we have a number of patterns you can kind of map off:

What sling is that?
It is made by Fishpond
When you set the hook you just pull the line?
In this case, yes! It's called a strip-set. Once you feel a strong connection after pulling the line, then you can lift your rod to apply pressure.
What's the difference between leader and fly line
