- Carp are some of THE most elusive and technical freshwater fish you can pursue with a fly rod. We are lucky enough to have access to a world-class carp fishery along the Front Range, but quality carp fishing can be found darn near anywhere in the United States. They require precise presentations, a keen pair of eyes, and some stout equipment that can stand up to use and abuse. There's a lot to love about chasing carp. They are measured in pounds, not inches, and certainly will take you into your backing at a moment's notice. They're a very worthy fish to chase with a fly rod in hand.
In this video, Rick Mikesell at Trouts Fly Fishing breaks down the necessary gear you need to start pursuing carp with a fly rod. From rods & reels to fly line and accessories, we're here to get you set up and ready to get after chasing these golden ghosts on the fly.

Rick's breakdowns are awesome...easy to listen to and watch, the guy knows his sh..stuff. 👍
Best and most comprehensive video and I've been carp since 2004!
I always felt using an equal weight ratio rod to bring those larger scrape fish is best overall, great topic.
Rick is a legend… The Carp King 👑
Legend!
Carp on the fly rocks!!!
Great recommendation! Thanks!
Good video
Hmm I use the bread flies floating deer hair a lot. They eat a lot here in the ponds from the top water. Often worked better here for me than sinking flies. Have to say a lot of people feed them with bread here or fish and try to attract them with toast bread here.
Which version of the tfo reel sbould i get my rod is a 7 or 8 weight 9ft
They're impossible to catch though
you absolutely do not need expensive gear to get carp on a fly. I do it all the time with cheap equipment don't let these merch pushers fool you. they're just trying to sell
I absolutely agree, buy a $200 7/8 weight and just fish. Carp, Gar, Big Bass, just go fishing! I’ve never encountered a sport that has so few working parts on equipment charge as much as fly fishing.
@viator21 what about center pin rigs? they may be contenders as well 😆
@@turkN9NE I didn’t even know this was a thing! Makes me laugh watching it. The should just buy a spinning reel and fish conventional.
I have no idea why people have to overcomplicate this very very SIMPLE craft that requires a lot of SKILL by adding strike indicators (bobbers) and full sinking line. Maybe I’m missing something, but I doubt it. I fish about 4 times a week, (fly exclusively) and scratch my head why people dump money into overpriced gear. Elitism at it’s worst.
@viator21 lol I know. gotta get that absolute perfect drift via extremely expensive gear, or you're just never gonna catch a fish. might as well just stay home 🤣 🤣
