  • Great full-suspension electric mountain bikes range between £3000 and £15,000. But how much more or less are you getting between one price point and the other? Motor, battery, components spec, price, and colour are all important factors when buying a new EMTB. In this video, Steve Jones explains the difference between diving deeper, or lesser into your pockets.

I started cheap with a bottom line Norco Fluid for my wife who, due to medical reasons, could not ride her mtb any more. I rode with her a couple of times and decided if I want to keep up I need an ebike. I got a Scott Genius. More expensive than the Fluid but more features. Norco - Shimano, Scott - Bosch. After many hours on both, Bosch all the way. Better power, better feel. I have ridden a Rocky Mtn Altitude with their proprietary motor. Love the motor, do not like the noise. These three brands are what my LBS carries. So, choosing my next ebike gets simpler. I buy from my favorite LBS that I have known for almost 30 years. I want a Bosch motor so Scott. Now which Scott. I know how I ride so I do not need 170 travel, 150 does the trick. I want carbon wheels, AXS shifting (I have it on my regular mtb and love it), and really good brakes. Scott does not make what I want so the solution? Buy a low end Scott Strike and build. Buying from my LBS means I get a deal on the upgrades and the LBS will sell my take offs for me.

I’m looking at buying my very first e-bike very soon, I’m 6’2” tall and heavy at about 18st, now I know this model isn’t cheap, I’m looking at the 2024 Orbea Wild M-Team, my consideration was this, it’s got lifetime warranty on the frame, it’s got XT group set, reasonably priced to replace components, Fox factory suspension, very tuneable. Especially as I’m heavy and may need a factory tune?? The Bosch CX motor is reliable, it has the free MYO fame colours, small charge component changes and it has awesome online reviews and it gets best e bike on some of them to. And I’ve got two local dealers in my area to test ride, buy and ask advice.

My only consideration was what after sales support i would get when buying my e bike. My LBS pushed me slightly above budget to get the more reliable bike with better warrenty and they have been fantastic with the few issues ive had.

If I had to choose one of the bikes probably the CF8 due to price/performance. The fact it has a Shimano motor does put me off though, as nobody seems to want to repair these motors due to possible issues with the electronics failing and lack of support from Shimano. It seems all emtb motors will require repair at some point and Shimano seem to only want to sell new motors which doesn't help when your warranty expires and is bad for the environment.

    • @Paulo-fr3xm
      @Paulo-fr3xm Před 9 měsíci +3

Yeah, know loads of folks had issues with Shimano motors, straight in the bin, really environmental friendly. Embn don't seem to want to call them out about it though, channel sponsor. Really independent jurnos ??? I made sure I got the Bosch motor for this very issue. If or when it packs in, plenty of out of warranty repair options and Bosch will supply the parts. So buyer beware

@@Paulo-fr3xm At last count, Shimano supplied 80% of all e bike motors, so there's a lot more of them out there.
And people online, who knows what they've done to kill a motor, but they advertise it far and wide usually with wild exaggerations that get wilder and wilder.
When I google "shimano ep8 failures" not much comes up.
Online it seems they all fail almost. The EP8 in my bike runs quiet and smooth and makes plenty of power.
I like it fine. Local shop has a good line on shimano rebuilds if needed.

My 2022 CF8 has been great, no complaints, no problems. To me the suspension works pretty darned well as is, once adjusted accordingly.
Local park is all rocks so a good testing place. Can the 36mm forks have a 160 kit put in? If so I might just do it.
More travel, a little more pedal clearance on rocks. The brakes? Are strong one finger stoppers.
Honestly the bike has worked way better than I thought it would.

I hate that color is factor but, to a degree it real is. I find that when looking at a bike it's not often the top of line is that you want even if you have the money. It's the base model or a step up. The top of the line isn't usually setup the way you wanted and it's more cost effective to buy a lower model and upgraded it the way you want it even if you do it right on day one. Sometimes it's the base model but color and maybe some component that your not going to change bumps you up a model. in case of these bikes the r models are big factor as the frame and motor are different

Well, we got to be honest with ourselves. If you don't regularly do manuals, bunny-hop over logs and low fences, and tend to be waiting for other riders when in a pack, can you buy gear to cover the lack of technique and skill?
To a point maybe, but isn't the whole point to have fun?
So, for me, it comes down to if e.g a slightly more plush and forgiving suspension increases the fun.
    And budget, of course...
So what would fit the normal mtb'er best, and what are the significant differences that one can actually detect when riding without being a pro or semi pro?

What to expect and what not. My current bike is 5 years old so not a good reference for the current parts like suspension. So your experience with all the parts would be a great help, instead of which on looks great colorwise.

I am coming to the opinion that every manufacturer cannot specify a comfortable saddle. let alone chose a decent drive train. The brakes are ho hum quality. Genuine high quality components exist but rarely get fitted. I think the only way to get a good price/performance bike is to build it yourself from individual specialist component suppliers.

What are you looking for? If Shimano or SRAM wont work for you , you'll have to build your own parts.
