    You do brilliant reviews on cars but I am curious to know why you think that stop start is the worst invention ever ? I have a Volkswagen polo and I think the stop start is such a simple and fuel saving system , I personally leave the car in neutral when I am stopped anyway so let the car do the stop start , as soon as I put the clutch in the car is started and ready within a second so I’m curious to know why you don’t like the system

    • @BarrieCrampton
      @BarrieCrampton  Před 5 lety +2

      Alex in my opinion when anything breaks on a car it is usually when its starting up, as that is when all the components are at their most stressed, every time the car starts its putting extra strain and wear on the starter motor, flywheel, ring gear, battery, alternator, waterpump, engine mountings, cambelt, fanbelt, crankshaft, pistons, valves etc, a modern car now starts and stops thousands of times more than one without stop start and believe me you can tell, they feel loose and well worn, also the amount of fuel it saves is negligible compared to the cost of a starter motor or dual mass flywheel, now a car that has done 100,000 motorway miles feels less wornout than a car thats done 5000 miles round town,

    • @4l3x50
      @4l3x50 Před 5 lety +1

      Barrie Crampton yes I do see your point absolutely and your opinion is brilliant and I do understand what you mean about the strain being put on the engine , but in my opinion I think that as the cars get more modern and more technology is built into cars and they are built more reliable I think that it can indeed cause damage but in modern cars with better quality built parts for the engine that it isn’t as bad as people think , don’t get me wrong you have had way way way more driving experience than me as I’ve been driving for only 5 years so I’m not 100% experienced or sure on everything but I have put 35000 miles on my vw polo and always used the stop start system and I have never had an issue with it not starting up or anything breaking , I have just saved fuel , I really do take pride in my car and I always inspect it to make sure of any strange noises or anything that doesn’t look right and there’s no issue with it , i also think that engines in this generation have changed so much that I wouldn’t call them propper engines , in my polo it is a 1.2 tsi and when setting off in first it always has a certain precise rpm it will go to make sure that I have enough power to set off but not too much and burning fuel which I think makes the car too technological as to get the real fun out of driving is to show off your skill of getting all the engine speed right by yourself , but hey we all have our own things we like and don’t like about cars , sorry for the long paragraph but I just thought I would mention it , keep up the good work Barrie !👍

    • @BarrieCrampton
      @BarrieCrampton  Před 5 lety +1

      4L3X / Alex i accept what you say but all i can tell you is that our reconditioning costs seem to be higher on start stop cars, and when you consider a car used to start once at the beginning of your journey and once at the end, now it can be 10,20,30,40, 50 times during a journey, components are not made 50 times better, and if you consider the costs of the ones which get the most punishment, alternator £650, clutch and flywheel £1000 you can buy a hell of a lot of fuel for that, then theres also material wastage and global warning of making new parts to take in to account. All in all cars these days are not made 50 times better and i would also recommend that the cambelt on a stop start car should be changed a lot sooner too, but its just my opinion
      Thanks for watching

    • @BarrieCrampton
      @BarrieCrampton  Před 5 lety +1

      @@jamesmawdsley7306 yes that is the other problem wiith stop start, it sometimes switches off at junctions just when you were about to set of into a gap in the traffic, it just delays you long enough to nearly get you killed, and i am sure that it will have been the cause of some collisions for sure

    Good reviews Barrie why stop start bad idea ?

    • @BarrieCrampton
      @BarrieCrampton  Před 2 lety

      it wears out all the components like ring gear, flywheel, starter motor, engine mounts, you have to have a different battery, and it has an awkward habit of cutting out just before you are about to turn right, or pull out on to a roundabout in in front of oncoming traffic, and just delays you long enough to put you in danger (thats my opinion)

    How is start/stop a bad invention? It's economical and less wear n tear and automotive engineers don't use 'traditional' starter motors in these situations. The starter used for start-stop systems combines several technologies.

    • @BarrieCrampton
      @BarrieCrampton  Před 3 lety +1

      Too many things, not enough time but the main ones are it stresses all the drive train components thousands of times more than conventional, a low mileage city car feels like its done hundreds of thousands of miles, they cost more to maintain than they save in fuel, and they have a habit of switching the engine off just when you need it and are pulling out into traffic (imho) ive just replaced the starter motor on a low mileage Porsche Cayenne, £680, and the “Special Battery” which is more expensive than the standard one because it was lazy starting, all thanks to the “stop star system 😂

    • @BarrieCrampton
      @BarrieCrampton  Před 3 lety

      Oh and my friend is just on with the starter motor on a Bentley GT which is 10 hours to remove and replace, thats a hefty repair bill, i cant remember ever replacing a starter motor in any non stop start cars that i have sold in the last 25 years, then there are the dual mass flywheels that are always going, the battery condition switches, engine mounts, gearbox mounts, shock absorbers, the list goes on, the cost, the energy wasted making components, material wasted, time off the road, etc etc etc
