Using a public charging station is an insane security risk

I'm not sure when this first aired, but yeah, "juice jacking" or whatever we want to call it, don't connect your device to anything that you can't trust... portable power banks are super cheap.
@@sbraudrick agreed. The main issue IMO is that you can always just buy a portable charging bank for really cheap. There’s no need to take the risk. Cool idea but it doesn’t sound like an essential.
Absolutely. I don’t even use the USB outlets on lamps in hotels and such, I bring my own charger and cube and plug it into the electric outlet. No chance I’m going to use some public charging system that I have no control over.
“You’ve come out with an incredibly elegant solution…..to free” might be the most low-key, savage burn I’ve ever heard.

and their bartender named amber lost their phones
Emphasis on “dim lightbulb” 😂
lmao
2:26 - Note what he says, he said "We test it all on the back end"
What that means is that the code for the fingerprint scanner works, but they haven't tested out the hardware (the actual technology). Which is a massive problem, the code could run no problem, but the actual application of that code through the physical technology could not work.
Yup, I am pretty sure their code can handle the requests to open or close the door. It's just the finger scan would be sending wrong signals lol
That's not what he meant. Since they don't have the doors yet, they had to check in the backend if the fingerprint scan was working correctly
which means they can call a finger print api lol
Someone else already fixed that problem years ago with those little portable charging batteries. They are cheap, there’s no security risk, and they even fit in your pocket!
New York City literally has free public charging ports on the street lmao
And I've seen the same thing they're pitching in Target. You sign up, pick a picture code, and when you come back you put your email and press your code lmao
I came here to say this. I have two portable batteries. The first one I bought still works, but the second one has a larger battery life, so it can charge two phones.
You have to have them on you at all times.
That's not a huge problem.
powerbanks. Literally been around so long they're already out of fashion. Right around the time phones which generally last all day were invented.
This feels like it would be useful on a very small scale back in 1995 in office buildings.

Robert hit the nail on the head. The fingerprint scanner is the biggest flaw with this business.
Yeah in 2014 when this originally aired, sure. Back then indeed fingerprint sensors were pretty poor, and good ones very expensive. Today fingerprint sensors (that work well) are everywhere, including on every laptop, cellphone, etc. That said it's not a good idea in any event, esp. with what it was costing them.
@@rolandm9750 yeah. Even today I’d stay away from that route. Especially in a public setting when it can get pretty dirty quickly. Do something else. Scan a drivers license or something. And then collect that data and sell to Google and make money that way? lol

And yet Robert gets the threat lol.
Honestly, they all gave it to them straight. Kevin was the only one who was enjoying their suffering. Ruthless indeed.
When you have a business this bad, the kind thing to do is actually be brutally honest and tell them how much it sucks. These guys probably had so many close family and friends keep telling them to “chase their dream” and that they had a good idea that the entrepreneurs were totally blinded by how terrible it actually is. Realizing your business is doomed is the first step to ending it and moving on to something more productive in your life.
That's why Kevin is my favorite shark
All of them can be ruthless in feedback. They are called Sharks for a reason. This is about people's money and people LOVE their money and hate losing it. This show isn't for encouraging bad entrepreneurs and bad products to keep going.
The lock picking lawyer would have a field day when they mentioned master lock
These guys really asked a room full of people who have flown private since smartphones came about if they know what it's like to sit around an airport waiting to board the plane. the first sentence of the pitch was the first nail in the coffin

The Sharks invest in products for average people though, not themselves. They are interested in what the masses will buy, not just what their own experiences are.
Robert is heavily into security, He raised doubts about fingerprint recognition with his $50K machines! ,,,these college guys should have listened INTENSELY
no, because while the sharks may have private jets, they probably understand that a large chunk of their consumers face this issue.
When investors are pitched an idea, they assume the position of a customer. They know most products aren't for them. Hence the "explain like i'm 5". They ask that to see if your average customer will understand what the product is.
“Pre-revenue”, pre-business plan, pre-prototype. Thanks for playing.
a couple of college kids who came up with an Idea during school.. can't fault them for it, they went way overboard
Then they should go in and ask for like 25k for 50% to launch the product. These are basically super high-risk investments that failure rate is extremely high. If you ask for chum change the sharks might be able to gamble with you
After a lengthy struggle, Amber ultimately went out of business in 2015.
Doubt it was actually "lengthy"
Looks like they did reduce the production cost and the amount they charged the businesses but they could not find many customers.
Better portable changers and longer battery life meant that the use of such changing stations was going to be limited.

Not at all
Not with fingerprint. You could do the exact same thing with a pin pad
Ignore the nay-sayers. This idea is based.
Why would a charging dock for business phones need security though? Just put the dock in an area only employees can get to. Some hospitals have phones they give employees at the start of their shift. The charging stations aren't out in the open and they require a special sign on to even use.
