  • Succession planting cut flowers may seem confusing or overwhelming, but once you get into the habit of planting for a continuous harvest, rather than a once a done harvest you'll be on the road to consistent blooms all season long.

Thank you for taking the time to making videos that help people like me - home gardeners who like to grow cut flowers in the landscape and not just in a farm-like configuration. Can you please show in one of the future videos how you replace the sunflowers in the ground after you cut them? How do you manage the planting areas for the sunflowers? Are you planting the same area with other kind of sunflowers or is it important to let the ground "rest" and plant something else in the same place? Thank you so much.

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Debra! For something that branches like a zinnia I will wait until it becomes hard to locate a good flower in the row. At that point I move on to the next succession. I practice crop rotation whenever possible. If and when I get powdery mildew on zinnias I pull them at that time. I will get a good number of cuts from each zinnia plant before they wane or become diseased. Things that will only produce one stem can be pulled immediately after harvest.

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  Před 3 lety

      Hi there neighbor. Such a hard question to answer, but I'll do my best. I focus my watering on newly planted things, and things I know are water hungry (sweet peas, ranunculus, dahlias, etc). I water everything in very well upon planting. Deep watering less often is better than shallow watering often. So much depends on weather. Not only how much it rains, but how hot and windy it is. A cool week without wind will not dry out the soil as much as a heat wave with strong winds. Since we are having a heat wave right now I'm watering more than normal. The plants will start to tell you if they are in distress. If anything even remotely starts to melt down I know I need to up the watering on that crop.
