- This may be an unpopular opinion, but I love eating backpacker meals. They make our time in the backcountry a little extra special because it gives us the opportunity to enjoy them in a beautiful setting! Today we’re diving into an introduction to, and the theory of backpacker meals. We made a video that details how we plan food for backcountry travel while also taste testing a few different major brands of backpacker meals out there.

Those look amazing ❤️ also I love your enthusiasm surrounding food
Glad to see u 2 r safe and healthy
I am right there with you, I LOVE backpacker meals. Heather's Choice has been my go-to lately.
Just wanted to give you a shout out - I downloaded a bunch of yalls videos before I went on a submarine deployment last year, and they helped give me a sense of normalcy and adventure that I had trouble experiencing any other way.
I'm so glad you're still making videos, and I hope that you're able to chase your adventures for as long as you want.
Your videos helped inspire me to kit out my jeep for adventures and also start making videos myself. I'm not entirely comfortable talking in front of a camera all the time yet, but I've definitely really enjoyed the process.
Submarine duty? I spent 21 years in the Army, and the only thing I would want to do in the Navy is sub duty. You are liked primed for van life or vehicle travel. Lol
@@russellrlf though I wasn't a great fit for sub duty itself, the learning to live for months on what you can fit in a duffel was a cool skill. When I go camping and I'm sleeping in the back of my Jeep now I can't help but think, "wow this is roomy!"
@@russellrlf I feel like army life either trains you to be really okay with backpacking... or really hate it
I’ve to see you again! Hope you both are very well and having fun.
We totally are! So much fun that we haven't had time to edit anything recently ;)
This was an awesome video. You should make one of these each year. Thank you!!!
New year, new meals!
I completely agree that Patagonia Provisions are a car camping meal. I’ve thrown the salmon in a tortilla with cream cheese and veggies on the road to a destination many times. And I always have a Black Bean Soup in my car camping box along with a packet of cooked chicken breast. Add the chicken breast packet to the soup mix in the beginning of cooking, perfect protein boost to a simple meal on the road with no effort at the end of a hard travel day.
You are so smart! That sounds amazing. There are those days every once in a while when we get to camp too late to really be able to do the "full meal" that we planned. I see these as being perfect for those sorts of days!
Great reviews. Thank u.
Peaked Refuel is my absolute go to
Great video and great info. We have stocked up on some of these over the years as we live in western NY blizzard country and you never know when you might get socked in for several days. In 2016 we got 5 feet of snow overnight. ❄
Looking forward to trying a wider variety once we get out on the road again. -Aimee
Wow! That is a side of backpacker meals that I have never thought of before! I'm sure you know this already but some of these companies sell their mix in bulk and without the packaging.
Thanks for your reviews! I have a lot of Good to Go packages but have only tried the pad Thai and chili. The pad Thai was nothing like real pad Thai, more like Singapore rice noodles but tasted okay. The chili, like you said was missing salt but I also added shredded cheddar and sour cream. I’m going to try to add dehydrated cheese and dehydrated sour cream to see if it can be a backpacker meal for me 😀.
Awesome review!! I loved how mischievous you looked when you were trying the desserts.
If available try Happy Yak, quality ingredients at a decent price point.
Always looking for new brands to try! So thank you so much! Desert in the backcountry just hits differently ;)
Yummy review! 👍
Thank you 😋
Love your videos! Especially this one given the range of expressions with your food tasting. Have you tried Harmony House foods? They're a good outfit. Great for dehydrated veggies, soups, beans, etc.
No! How have I not heard of that brand?! I will have to keep my eyes peeled for it!
Missed you guys.
Slowly but surely we are getting the massive amount of videos edited! Should have some videos more regularly soon!
The mountain house fettuccini is probably my favorite. Especially the shorter bags so you don’t get food covered fingers.
Have you seen those long spoons they make for backpacker meals so that doesn't happen?! Here it is: bit.ly/30oQ3VE
Genuinely blew my mind!
Our favorites are the Backpackers Pantry three sisters, chana masala, and Kathmandu curry - but with TVP added for extra protein on all three.
Real pro move right there!
Thanks for the vid.
You guys should try Pack It Gourmet. They are the best 👌
Love discovering a new brand! We will keep our eyes peeled for them!
Smoked Paprica ! Try it , you'll love it!It goes with anything1
Oh that is such a great idea!
Very informative and cute.
You are too kind!
Thanks for all the good info, we live in Palmer and would love to meet you?
There you are!
Omg we bought some of these to try in Moab today and then watched the video while eating ours!
HAHA no way! Which did you get?! And did you like it?!
@@BoundForNowhere we got mountain house Mac N cheese and chicken with mashed potatoes! I loved them both but my wife preferred the Mac N cheese.
Ya'll should check out Fernweh Food Company and their backpacker meals. Really good! I've not had a bad meal from them yet! Plus, their packaging is biodegradable.
Now you are speaking my love language. I really don't understand why all backpacker meals don't come in biodegradable packaging!
Biggest tip seems to be bring salt and hot sauce lol
Also love your necklace and overalls in this vid, do you know where you got either? :)
Hey....I took this class in high school! Missed you at the expo. Timmy C Arizona
Wish we could have made it! We were still in Canada at the time
Awesome...speaking of candy bars, peanut butter and almond butter Snickers will change your lives...Lol!
YES THEY WILL AND THEY ALREADY HAVE!
So many backpacker meals are loaded with sodium, which I am mindful of. There are a few that I’ve found that are TOO bad (relatively) speaking. One of my favorites is TrailTopia banana oatmeal that has 233 calories & zero sodium. It tastes good too.
My favorite is Mountain House Biscuits & Gravy.
Stoked to have another B&G lover around here!
@@BoundForNowhere I always use slightly less water then what they recommend.
if you haven't tried packit gourmet meals... you're really missing out... good suggestions on what you ate
Agreed. May be the best out there.
alllwwayyys lacking salt - AGREED x 1,000
#SaltAddictsUnite
I agree, that biscuits meal is so gloopy (in the best way)
haha came for the biscuits stayed for the gloop
how do you measure out water for rehydrating? im always just eyeballing it from a pot of boiling water and invariably getting it wrong
So with a @jetboil they come with a measuring cup, but we also carry this mug: bit.ly/3tf1EjB the cup itself (when you take it out of the sleeve) is a measuring cup!
"Add extra fat before leaving"!!! Why didn't I think of that?
I just started doing it a year or two ago! It's kind of a game changer right?!
You should of tested some heathers choice, could of stopped by their store in Anchorage.
Where? From Palmer
Whoo, first! 😎
Surprised you feel these meals need more salt? Seems like most have very high sodium content but great reviews and topic
So we are heavy sweaters on trail we often feel super depleted so even thought the salt content is high we add it to the meals and we add a supplement to 50% of all the water we drink on trail. For that we wither have Nuun or LiquidIV
It’s interesting that it seems Most of these could use some more salt or other spices… and that they don’t just put a few small packets of those in the bag that you can add to taste?… seems like a no brainer
Ohhhhhh you are right! That is such a good idea. Then you can add it if you want, don't if you dont! I mean Backpackers Pantry has plenty of options that have "extras" included... so why not some salt and a lil hot sauce?!
I don't mind low salt. Leave it to me to "tune up" my meals.
Same! Bring on the hot sauce!
No Peak Refuel? IMO, their beef stroganoff is superior to Mountain House
YEAH?! Well we will have to try it. We just got what was available at the time. This past year there has been a bit of a shortage of these backpacker meals
no offense....but WHY would you take a 9$ oatmeal packet when you could take a 50cent packet or 2 for essentially the exact same thing?
most of these could be created on your own for little effort and WAY less cost.
i find the cost of these meals to be offensive, to tell the truth.
love the vid as always!
They make money if you buy them thru thier site so they can stay on the road.
Even cheaper and less packaging to bring a bag of quick oats, sugar, and some trail mix or whatever to put on top. You do have to have a container to rehydrate it in, but if you’re out more than a few nights the weight of all those backpacker oatmeal pouches would outweigh a plastic container by far.
As usual, I find these meals to be too pricey. Can delicious meals be made at home. Yes. Most certainly yes. And they would cost 30% of the cost.
We sadly dont have that luxury. There are some people who have mentioned they keep these in their car and home for readiness purposes in the event of bad weather that keeps them from getting to the store. Thought it was a solid idea and a different way to look at things like this
Scary food equals scary poops 💩
Only rich people can afford those things. Have a nice day.
