    Aram Ilyich Khachaturian (Արամ Եղիայի Խաչատրյան (Aram Yeghiayi Khach’atryan) /Арам Ильич Хачатурян (Aram Il’ich Khachaturyan) (1903-78) was an Armenian/Soviet composer who blended elements of his native Armenian music with modern harmonies. He wrote music of various genres, and he is best known for his concertos and ballet music.
    The incidental music for the play “Lermontov”, by B. Lavrenyov, was written for the production of the Moscow Art Theatre on 30 December 1954. The items were 1. Song in the Field, 2. March, 3. Mazurka, 4. Waltz, 5. Lezginka, 6. Military Signals, 7. A Dirge for the Poet, and 8. Finale. In 1959, Khachaturian compiled a symphonic suite, as the current form.
    (0:00) No.1 Introduction/On the Death of a Poet - The introduction expresses the poet’s death, aligning with the epigraph preceding the play.
    (3:20) No.2 Mazurka - This part is Lermontov’s avowal of love to Maria Shcherbatova.
    (7:10) No.3 Waltz - The waltz is supposed to a description of the general scene of St. Petersburg.
    (13:35) No.4 Intermezzo and Finale (Lermontov in Caucasus)
    (18:54) FInale (which is a Lezginka). This is supposed to be a depiction of conspirators plotting the murder of Lermontov in a tavern (dukhan).
