Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
ドラキュラII 呪いの封印
Developer: Konami
Publisher: Komani
Nintendo
1987
Not all sequels are bad and if done correctly, many can be produced and a loyal fanbase will follow every twist and plot turn as a creator’s world is brought to life and realized through the passion of fans. It can be a wonderful thing, and anyone who is human geeks on something.
Some titles can break even with fun gameplay and good mechanics and will limp along until another sequel can redeem the mistakes of its predecessor. Despite all of this, some franchises have the “too big to fail” corporate mentality. Regardless of all the academic rhetoric you throw at them, ravenous fans will still purchase a title simply because it is said title.
It’s hard to determine if Castlevania was meant to be a one time game or if it was meant to be a series. The timeline that was created by Koji Igarashi leaves out several titles like Legends, Legacy of Darkness and Castlevania 64, giving no apparent reason to their removal beyond the convenient excuse of them not fitting in correctly in the timeline. Several years later, Konami released an updated timeline with the games Igarashi removed, putting them back in as side stories.
Both timelines are created after the fact and it is used more as a tool to try and link the games together in a consistent universe then to show that the games were actually created this way from the start. Simon’s Quest is put in the timeline at 1698, but the dates on Dracula’s Tombstone are 1431-76 - a reference to Vlad the Impaler and inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Regardless if subsequent titles in the series were meant to be part of a cohesive timeline, the first two at the least are directly linked, taking place only years apart.
It’s hard to tell if any of the top Executives at Konami were meddling in any of the games being developed at the time. Corporate manipulation really only became a thing when video games became a mainstream medium of entertainment. In-house programming jobs were the norm at that time as many games during that generation were both produced and developed by one company.
What made this game so obtuse for its time? Given the popularity of the first title, Konami probably gave the development team a long leash to realise a sequel. The game had grand ideas and capitalized on several emerging trends in the industry - Open world exploration similar to Metroid, RPG light elements and action like Zelda II, and time-based day/night cycles. It was a lofty endeavor that set out to redefine side scrolling adventure titles, and to mainstream and economize RPG elements, but the system limitations at the time posed a monumental hurdle and the Simon’s Quest team ended up with a title that was clumsy and awkward.
Taken as is, the game is enjoyable, the music and sound really pop in that famous Konami fashion, and the controls are more user friendly than the first. What kills the game ultimately for many is the localization.
The entire game, from the opening story screen to the ending dialogue is a failure on a scale that almost makes it an academic study in itself. The intent of the developer was perhaps to leave subtle clues through Japanese wordplay, inferences, and references. This got horribly perverted and ended up with only about 10% of the clues being useful, the rest being downright misleading.
An unfortunate reality of this poor translation was the difficulty. The game inherently was not that hard. When it came to gameplay, this is the easiest of the Nintendo trilogy. You gained levels by killing enemies and grew stronger by leveling and upgrading your whip. The challenge never really ramped up, but would remain a near constant. The only difficulty came in the form of dialogue.
Some will perceive length as difficulty, but with patience that is alleviated. The game also introduced a grind mechanism whereby you gather the next item for strength or progress you needed you obtain hearts. Hearts are a currency in this one Castlevania. No other game in the series incorporated still beating cardiac muscles as a currency for trading. It wasn’t just a black market job either. You wanted to upgrade your whip you needed 250 of these things. Garlic? sure that will only cost you fifty. Also on side, was a crystal trading scheme going around.
There are many reasons to hate this game and only a few reasons to like it. Whether the developers were underestimating their audience or overestimating their ambition, something got lost in the translation and North American gamers paid the price. What could have been a great sequel, one that would elevate the series to the next level, turned out to be a much debated, much talked about blip in game history. - Hry
Simon Belmont is so badass that immediatley after killing Dracula and being cursed by him for 7 years, he than goes on a huge journey to find the scattered remains of him, just so he can RESSURECT and KILL him again, therefore ending the curse, and even after all that, after his sworn enemy had thought he had the last luagh, the man still has the human decency to give his nemesis a proper burial, what a legend.
😂
Yep.😊
Bro was a gigachad 💀
"His blood and sweat have penetrated the earth and will induce magic & happiness for those who walk on the land."
Man - great writing.
All thanks to the magic of gloriously awful 1980s translation.
Despite what you'd normally expect with the rest of the game being Japanese the endings had glorious Engrish, and even then they got the points across better. Though this line's still hilariously bad.
"His blood and sweat penetrated into the ground of Transylvania will bring us full-blown flowers with happiness next spring."
Yes, this is actually what it says.
@@DeskoDev "Simon's fluids seeped deep into the earth. FIN"
I guess it could be metaphorically saying “the work he did blessed the earth of Transylvania with happy days ahead” given that “blood and sweat” means one’s labor.
@@DeskoDev
that line is great though in both
Here’s how I interpreted the endings: Simon has 15 days to break the curse but 8 days left to live. If you beat the game in 8 days or less Dracula is defeated, the curse is lifted and Simon lives and buries Dracula (best ending). If you beat the game in 9-15 days Dracula is defeated and the curse is lifted, but Simon dies a few days after burying Dracula because his body is too broken down (normal ending). And if you beat the game in 16 days or more Dracula is defeated and the curse is lifted, but Simon dies almost immediately after the battle before Dracula is buried (worst ending).
As for which ending is canon, I think it was confirmed that the best ending is the canon ending. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
Mia Good analogy, but the normal ending says they still need somebody to break the curse, which indicates that the curse still lingers. Also, I believe Konami has said that Simon did indeed die at the conclusion of the battle, as it has been said that Simon is the only Belmont Dracula managed to kill, only he had to settle for taking Simon with him as he himself was dying. As I understand, the best ending is indeed the canon ending, although the text is most likely mixed up for at least some of the endings. Many of us believe that to be the case.
@@ThunderFist1978 From what I understand the endings were mistranslated.
I checked the japanese version,
they translated correctly
so it is original developers’
mistake,maybe
m.czcams.com/video/GNWfczH9XZ4/video.html
This is correct
i guess the best ending is canon
That was possibly the most anticlimactic final boss I’ve ever fought
The text for the three endings was mixed up. Seems like for the bleakest ending (gray monochrome) the text for the middle ending (blue sky) should be used, while the blue sky ending should use the red sky ending's text.
Thus...
GRAY SKY ENDING:
"Although the confrontation between Simon Belmont and Dracula has concluded, Simon couldn't survive his fatal wounds. Transylvania's only hope is a young man who will triumph over evil and rid the city of Dracula's deadly curse."
BLUE SKY ENDING:
"The encounter with Dracula is terminated. Simon Belmont has put an end to the eternal darkness in Transylvania. His blood and sweat have penetrated the earth and will induce magic and happiness for those who walk on this land."
RED SKY ENDING:
"The battle has consummated. Now peace and serenity have been restored to Transylvania and the people are free of Dracula's curse forever. And you, Simon Belmont, will always be remembered for your bravery and courage."
This is what Belmonts truly are. Even for Dracula, they give him a decent burial and pray for him.
Anyone else see the irony in Dracula’s tombstone having a cross on top of it?
No. The legend of Dracula is based on Vlad The Impaler Tepes, who was a Romanian ruler and warrior of Christian (Orthodox) background. In any iteration of the vampire stories surrounding Vlad Tepes (the real person) being transformed into Dracula (the mythical creature) it would stand to reason that the headstone placed at his grave would be adorned with a cross.
Ian Rosado I’m aware of the history. I just thought it was funny since he, in order to become the immortal Dracula, rejected God, and thus the joke became if you wore a crucifix you could repel him.
yes.

I agree he is the easiest final boss
It was really boring. Like c'mon!

Holy crap, that description. Talk about informative! :O
Thanks! Sorry it looks like one big ugly text block bomb.
That is actually an excerpt from a longer article I wrote about the trouble NES sequels had and it's symmetrical comparison to the movie industry at the time. I would love to write about video games in some aspect as a career one day, and I particularly love the history behind games. I wouldn't mind writing about it and the socio-cultural impacts of gaming....while trying to get people to laugh.
Edomaden Well, you certainly are good at it! Definitely well on the way to that, if you really wanna go that route.
I, too, am interested in the history and impacts behind the gaming industry as a whole, so It really seems that more impressive to me.

I never understood why Simon died of his wounds at Dracula's grave. And why are we burying that prick anyway?
Respect for Dracula makes him more legend
Hallowed ground. Makes it harder to resurrect. Someone would have to desecrate and despoil the surrounding area first, before they could properly revive, resurrect or otherwise make Dracula, or any other undead whole again.
You are absolutely right, the game may be hard at first for not knowing what to do like in the first The legend of zelda game, but after searching up and then playing its a lot easier than CV 1 and 3 and you can enjoy it and want to replay it by downloading some arranged fangames of the game or even the game itself
So.... the endings are:
1. Simon survives, kills dracula and gets rid of the curse.
2. Simon dies, but kills Dracula, yet the curse is still there and an another vampire slayer has to get rid of it.
3. Simon dies, but kills Dracula and gets rid of the curse.
Right?
The third ending is somewhat confusing. It's never implied that Simon dies, just that the blood and sweat he spilled during the fight bring the people of Transylvania peace and solace now that Dracula is dead....for now....
at least that's what I think I'm reading...
Edomaden I'm pretty sure the text for the second and third ending got mixed up
Given this game's localization, I believe that.
TGX Game Reviews But the text for the first and second ending got mixed up.
(easy ending). Simon survives, kills dracula and gets rid of the curse.
(normal ending). Simon dies, kills Dracula, yet the curse is still there and another vampire slayer has to get rid of it.
(hard ending). Simon defeats Dracula and destroys the curse, but Dracula is not dead.

Simon walks away from the grave and that night Dracula's hand pushes through the dirt.
its funny how everyone likes the sunset ending best, yet it shows Dracula returning come nightfall. Meanwhile the night ending doesn't have him rise up.
I just read the instruction booklet online , it says after killing Dracula in Castlevania 1 Simon got cursed and his Soul is slowly dying, so he has to find the 5 parts and burn them in the Castle cauldron. Finally I understand, if he does it fast enough perhaps he lives, or is it that he does not survive in any Of The 3 endings.
He only lives in one ending
And that ending is canon
Mind blown! More than one ending? Give me a break. Now I have to do a better job beating this game!
Ill give you some information about the endings:
Good ending: beat the game in less than 8 game days. Simon has eliminated the course that dracula put on him
Normal ending: beat the game in less than 15 game days. Simon defeats dracula, but the course takes over Simon and he dies time after he visit Dracula's gravestone
Bad enging: beat the game in more than 15 game days. The course takes over Simon faster, and he dies even before coming to Dracula's gravestone
Ha wow. I have only achieved the normal ending. Now I will have to beat it to get the good ending!
Okay. Is the first one we see the bad ending, the second one the normal ending and the last one the good ending?
Yes, littlesongbird1
actually they screwed up the normal ending and the bad ending... the wording for the normal ending is supposed to go with the bad ending and the wording for the bad ending goes with the normal ending.
I don’t care who what thinks about Simon’s Quest.
But this is probably my favorite Castlevania series games! :)
a lot of people like this game. AVGN even came out and said him bashing the game was purely satire, but viewers took it to heart and literally started bashing the game only because of AVGN. the game has minimal flaws, is a bit cryptic, but overall is a very good game and lots of fun. i remember playing it for hours on end trying to figure out where to go. a friend finally revealed the crystal's purpose and then the game flew by..
@@kavya1638The pitfalls are the worst part. Some things are insanely hard to figure out as well. Nintendo Power is needed 😂

why is the bad ending the most happy one
I've always felt that if you let Dracula move around, he'd get out of hand with it and he will be more difficult.
trust me it's a true nightmare, he hurls projectiles constantly not letting you land one hit on him, rushing him is the best option
I actually remember a code for that game that i got out of a Nintendo power magazine in 88 when this game came out. I was about 6 at the time and still remember the code
Matter of fact just played it for some fun since the old thing and games still work perfect it's something fun to do while stuck inside ripping bongs

One of most influential games of the franchise many elements of the game were later reused and polished in symphony of the night
Thank goodness for the 2X speed option.
I just completed my first ever no continues run of this game and got the best ending. The one time I died was due to falling into the water in Rover mansion I believe, it was some aggravating jump. My time at the end of the game was 6 days, 23 hours, 51 minutes.
I've done it in under 5 days myself with just the bare essentials.
@@mattsneed4569 Me too in 5 days total. I didn’t bother with getting the Thorn Whip. It was a waste of time and hearts. I always buy holy water first then proceed to Berkley Mansion (1st mansion).
Very messed up in my opinion. The good ending with red sky seems worse than normal ending with blue sky, because Dracula wakes up from his grave, right? I think the good ending should've used a blue sky with Dracula who stayed in his grave, dead and the normal ending should've used the red sky with Dracula waking up from his grave afterwards. The bad ending should've used the text from normal ending. The good ending should've used the text from bad ending, because it feels more cheerful to me than the original one on good ending. The good ending's text seems to fit better the normal ending, but that's just me probably. It was terribly screwed up or was it intentional? I really don't think it was intentional though.
Another thing I came up with.. on bad ending Simon's dead, but Dracula also stays dead. In normal ending (from my point of view the red sky one) Simon survives, but Dracula wakes up from his grave and the curse is not gone. What is worse? And did Simon die on normal ending or no? If he does then normal ending seems worse than the bad ending to me.
Well I just came to the conclusion that good ending feels like a normal ending. I said good ending's text (originally the red sky) feels like the text for normal ending (which should be with red sky in my opinion) So basically the game's good ending is a normal ending to me.
Sorry if you have a headache from reading this phylosophical conclusions of mine lol.
I think the 'good' ending actually translates better to 'true/canon' ending. I always look at it like that to lessen the confusion lol
Dracula always finds a way to ressurect eventually. That's Castlevania 101. But the curse is lifted on the land and Simon survives in the best ending.
The precursor of the multiple endings mechanic the franchise used.
Love this ending theme.
Actually, The Grave says 1431-1476 or something
That's the birth and death years of the real Dracula (according to wiki)
Jesus, even the text HERE is at a crawl.
I got it at double speed and it's still taking me the time to finish my beer to read it.
I don't care what everyone thinks about Simon's Quest (*cough*avgn*cough*), I still consider it to be one of the best Castlevania games. While the GBA Castlevania games draw heavy influence from SotN, SotN ends up using some of the mechanics from SQ, refines them and really takes all the credit, which is bullshit.
Isn't MSX2 vampire killer the first metrovania in the series ?
But in an amped up simons quest, you still wouldn’t have the thrill of playing as alucard again, or changing to a bat wolf or mist
Aww cmon aria of sorrow was super good
This is still one of the most influential Castlevania games, and completely underrated by the modern CV gamers. Easily on the top 5 CV games. Strange how many don't see that. It's remarkable.
Did you play it without a guide? I'll only respect your opinion that way, because this game is full of BS that you couldn't probably figure out without a guide or hours of trial and error.
I've only seen the 2nd one mostly. I've rarely seen the first one. I never saw the last one.
Ok let me get this straight (spell wrong )
1) you get worst ending if your taking so Goddamn long
2) you get bad ending if it less then 15 days and more then 8 days
3) you get good ending if it less then 8 days
Btw not literally 8 or 15 days I mean like In the game there's day and night
WHAT A HORRIBLE GAME TO HAVE A CURSE
I don't think it worked that way. The game had day and night and if you entered the castle at day, night or dusk / dawn that's the ending you got. Regardless of how good or bad you did in the rest of the game.
Zixon - Lvl. 100 Boss don’t want to make conflict
@@cread80dsflkdsh You are wrong
@Fuck You Proof ? You also have to defeat the curse not just Dracula. I've seen speed runners get the worst ending. So no I'm not wrong. How fast you play the game has nothing to do with it.
bort simpson I believe there are passwords that alter the in-game clock, more specifically, a password that would keep the the clock at 0 so you can get the good ending without being pressed for time. So yes, how long it takes you to beat the game absolutely determines what kind of ending you get.
Why does the bad ending sound better than the normal one? Did they accidentally mix the endings up or something?
I finally beat this game yesterday and the first ending is the one I got. I liked the game. It's my 2nd fav of the NES ones after the first one. The first one is my fav nes game and one of my fav games of all time. Castlevania III is third. Super Castlevania IV haven't played much
I think you got the worst ending bro
You got the worst one
Well I guess that Simon disappeared or died after Castlevania 2,the Super Castlevania 4 doesn't count as it was a remake of the 1st Castlevania game, and his successor would be Richter Belmont. That's my theory of Simon's aftermath after Castlevania 2.
Umm dude the belmont after simon is juste belmont not richter
Richter is after juste
I didn't even know there was different endings. It was rather difficult to get to the end, and at the time nobody around knew this, written nowhere.
It seems like the bad and normal endings' texts are completely mixed up to me. The normal ending seems worse than the bad ending for sure.
I’m pretty sure the developers mixed up the text here. The first ending you if you take too long is all grey with no Simon, but the text is the happy ending. The second ending requires you to play better, the background is all bright and cheerful and Simon is clearly standing there and alive, but the text says he died, so from the text this is the “bad” ending even though you have to play better to get it.
Between stuff like this and the unhelpful “hints” from the townsfolk, this game would have been much better if they spent just a little more doing some quality control on the translation to English.
It's not even a translation thing apparently.
I always got the B&W ending all through my young days, thats all i ever got, the two times i played through it and with the password cheats.
Just finished the game. Got the bad ending because it took me 14 days to finish. I like to look underneath every rock and get everything. 3 bosses and a lot of faulty mechanics, not an enjoyable game.
castlevanvia 3 was a prequel crazy right
really??? 3 ends? but how you were supposed to trigger each of them?
Good ending less then 8 days oh not literally days btw
Bad ending less then 15 days
Worst ending more then 15 days
The game itself would transition from day and night so depending on when you fought Dracula determined the ending. I think the game made it easier to get to the castle at night (when Dracula would be most powerful) and you had to just waste time fighting enemies outside until it was day, but if you entered in between the transition you got the 3rd ending.
@@cread80dsflkdsh Wrong. It's based on how many days it took you to beat the game.
Which ending is canon? That’s what I want to know
Good ending ( simon lives and kills dracula and no more curse)
Just a logang Boi but you need to think about how it would tie in with Rondo of Blood
Prob the one where the curse remains
5:18 is stupid. Who's hand is that suppose to be? Dracula? The guy who's curse was just defeated and only resurrects every 100 years?
How is Dracula only 45?
The grave says he was born in the 1431 and died 1476 and Castlevania 1 & 2 take place in 1690's .
And the year 1476 is important because during that time Castlevania 3 Dracula's curse takes place .
So you could say that the gravestone was originaly made by Alucard after Trevor killed Dracula , it makes sense .
wtf are you playing with a screen filter blurs out all that pixelated goodness and flickery joys..
Considering caslvania 3 is called draculas curse, I'm guessing ending 2 is canon
castlevania 3 is a prequel the order goes 3, 1, 2.
Umm dude good ending is canon
Castlevenia 3 is a prequel a belmont before simon Trevor belmont
Funnily enough, Dracula's curse only takes place after 3, in curse of darkness
So Simon dying is the canon ending?
No, the 2nd ending is the canon.
I think the 2nd ending is the best
I wish there was an ending where Simon lived but the curse took hold and turned him into a creature of the night. Then they could have a sequel where Simon is a cursed martyr who saved everyone, but he's corrupted and fighting with his dark side.
There is a problem .
Simon most likely didn't marry anyone during that time , so the world is doomed .

*YOU'RE TOO SLOW!!!*
I looked forward to this game for so long when it first came out. And yet, in retrospect, it was a complete mess, including the botched endings. The single biggest clue should have been kneeling at the cliff for the tornado…I spent countless hours trying to figure that one out before giving up and calling the Nintendo hotline to tell me the answer. “Bloody Tears” was the only redeeming thing from this game in retrospect.
Your description is more of an editorial than a description.
That's the point. It's a review. I try to offer some history, insight, a few laughs, into my descriptions. I'm glad you read it though
This game was so complicated and beyond stupid in many ways. Granted, I am a fan of the game and series, but none of the endings makes sense. You can't say there is a "normal" ending really - because two of these (at least one does) blatantly says you died anyway! The black and white one doesn't say so, but it can be interpreted as such. To make matters even more confusing, the ending on the black and white one says the curse is lifted in Transylvania, but the "normal" one suggests there was still a curse going on in Transylvania. So if you look at it from the point of view that the hero dies (and if you say the black and white ones means that is the case too), neither one of those is a better ending! In fact, I argue that the "colored" one is worse because the curse is still there on Transylvania AND your hero died! I am surprised NO ONE has even analyzed that in the way I'm looking at it.
The third good "ending" is cryptic in the fact that it doesn't say you died nor survived - but it is in color and says the curse is lifted from the city. It can be looked at in either way and many people just say he survived (and rightfully so). I am surprised many don't look it at that he probably died anyway - but looking at the fact you complete the game quickly, it makes sense in a way that this is the ideal ending.
The manual never gives any hint at all on the time frame you must have to ideally complete the game. I read that through and through and doesn't say anything about time frames only suggesting that surviving longer in the game, you will be granted you a good outcome. Obviously not!
Simon kneeling at the end = bad ending. The ending was determined by what time of day it was when you entered the castle. That's why some are day or night or dusk to night. I think the game got you there in the day and you were supposed to wait until dark to enter, but if you entered too soon you get the day turns into night ending.
