  • Unboxing and taking a brief look at the TP-Link ER605. We also set it up in standalone mode but do not go into incredible detail about the setup. I will do a more detailed setup at a later date.

    May I give you a suggestion? When I do demo setups for my channel I always use admin for user name and password. Then for my personal setup I make it more advanced. That way you will not forget the password while you are recording. I got this router for an upgrade because the old TP-Link load balance router I have been using is not gigabit. Some things just do not work properly on a 100 mb anymore.
    For those that are reading this comment and looking at buying one. I have been using TP-Link since 2012 and now I have both wi-fi access points and routers. They have given me years of reliable service. If you need more bells and whistles you will need to spend more money.

    • @SPXLabs
      @SPXLabs  Před 2 lety

      Suggestions always welcome! I had considered doing admin admin but didn’t want to set some poor soul up with easy credentials that would leave them vulnerable.
      Lol also I’d probably forget the password anyway.
      What kinds of things don’t work?

      You should be able to just plug into the WAN port from your modem (from your internet company or a modem that is compatible with your ISP). This just "routes" the internet to where it's being asked to go. Keep in mind this specific router is *not* a WIFI router, so you'll need a separate access point or WIFI router connected to the LAN port on this router.

    • @SPXLabs
      @SPXLabs  Před 2 lety +1

      Wan port needs to be connected to your ISPs modem/router/gateway and that device will assign an IP address to the tp link router.
      Other wise unplug from the wall plug your pc into the tp link router and navigate to the default IP address of the router to do whatever you need to do. Then set it up for WAN access.
      If that doesn’t work call your ISP for help.

    • @staaldak
      @staaldak Před 2 lety +1

      In laymans terms, standalone setup means you can configure the router via it's built in web interface found by typing its ip adress into the adress bar of any browser. Usually this router would be set up using a Tp-link OC200 network controller, which is a centralized way to set up this router along with other compatible Tp-link switches and access points to form a pretty decent home or small business network. You can set up a raspberry pi to act like an OC200, or a VMcontainer on a NAS, if you're into that kind of thing.

    • @staaldak
      @staaldak Před 2 lety

      Yes you can do this fine with standalone mode. The chances are you can plug an ethernet cable into your tv and the routers and it will work without the need for any other configuration. The tricky part is if you want your tv to reside on a separate VLAN - virtual lan network - to the rest of your devices. There's tons of guides how to do that in both standalone mode or with an OC200/Cloud controller.

    • @NgocLaMinh

    Literally was going to buy one this week and thought... Let's just see if ubiquiti has any edge routerx in stock after being out for like a year. And sure enough they had one.

    blows my mind that TP Link has not come out with a NGFW considering the portfolio they offer. They need to compete directly with Ubiquiti and Meraki. they have EVERYTHING except a real firewall.. Anyone who puts this as their edge device is going to be vulnerable, period..

      Noob question, why would this make a network vulnerable if it was the edge device? I have been thinking of replacing a netgear mesh system with this and APs.

      The controller should not make a difference. Maybe a setting got modified somewhere. Hard to diagnose
