SGDQ2015 raised over $1,200,000 for Doctors Without Borders, and is just one of the many charity marathons from Games Done Quick.

I’ve got to say, it was awfully nice that they had a round of applause when Oats died. There are too many races when someone dies, and the sentiment is “That sucks dude. Anyway..... who wants to go bowling? Har har har”

This was my first GDQ, and this was one of the highlights of the event. I don't know anything about Metroid, and I was glued to the screen.
I was rooting for Killing the Animals, myself (I like to think the Animals scarifies themselves for Samus' victory), but I couldn't donate to help them win.
I honestly like how some of the runners didn't make it, as in they failed to finish the race. It makes the race feel much more intense.
Just in case you're wondering who's who, from left to right the runners are:
Oatsngoats, Zoasty, David Clemens, Straevaras.
I worked this out by watching the end of everyone's run and seeing who reacts to it.

I recently discovered this channel and this made me like discover speedruns again since I hadn't watched one since at least two years
And I would to know, what do they do with all these donations? And also, how come so many people give so much amounts of money just for a bet?
The money raised from GDQ go either to Prevent Cancer Foundation or to Médecins Sans Frontières, depending on which marathon (AGDQ or SGDQ). The money from the bet still goes to the foundation, it is just donated towards something (on the even) for the sake of raising more money.
I would really like to see the top 4-5-6 players in the world run this at a future gdq. Too bad they're so spread out and can't all make it.

In 2016 we had Zoasty, Oatsngoats, Behemoth87 and Sweetnumb, not the greatest execution at times but it's still my fav race ever
why do people donate and say "Kill the animals." What does that mean? I'm so confused. I watch AGDQ and SGDQ a lot. Occasionally I tune into the live streams and I still don't know what it is.
Can someone please explain?

+Jack Pakela In Super Metroid you can kill or save the animals. Killing them saves the time, saving them loses it
+Jack Pakela As such, it has become a very popular bid-war incentive to raise more money. Super Metroid is often saved for one of the last runs to get as much money out of it as possible.
In Super Metroid, during the Zebes escape sequence, you can go into the Bomb Torizo room to find animals. They help explain wall-jumping and Shinesparking in certain areas. If you go into the Bomb Torizo room in the escape sequence, you can blast the wall and give the animals a way out of the planet, which is exploding. This fact is commonly used to start speedrun competitions between donators who want to see the animals get saved or killed.

Man, oats seems to die on these races. so sad
Oatsngoats is a wild man. When the stars align for him, he sets some great records, but things fall apart quite often too.
I watch his stream on a daily basis. I felt so bad when he died, because any% was kind of like "his" category
