Towed a 8x5 Hiker for 2 seasons with a Toyota FJ Cruiser. This past summer I traded the FJ in for a 4Runner. (the FJ had 200k and I tow the hiker from NY to Colorado and back twice a year, so it was time) Love the 4Runner - Toyota is the way to go if you want absolute dependability. I usually lose 4-5 MPG towing. Fridge is always in the tow vehicle, running off a 500W Jackery. I tend to travel light as I rarely spend more than a day or two in camp and I travel solo, but storage is no issue. And thanks for all you guys do for the Hiker community!

Have a 5x9 hiker tow it with a 22 4Runner it’s been from Wisconsin to Oregon a few
times and never had any issues. Love it. We have a fridge box.

4Runner owner here, and I'm seriously looking at buying a Hiker. Slowly outfitting my daily driver 4Runner for light overlanding, but my biggest recreational use is for amateur radio Parks on the Air. If you'd like a look at how I'm set up so far, there's a video on my channel showing a radio installation.

I have a 2019 4runner. I installed a wooden platform in the back with recessed L-track for tying down Zarges aluminum boxes. Also installed on the platform is a DFG Off-road fridge slider which hold a Dometic fridge which I power from a Jackery 500 which is charged from the truck while driving and with shore power or solar panel while camping. Gobi Stealth roof rack on the 4runner as well. It’s been a great tow vehicle for the Hiker trailer with the exception of horrid gas mileage, lol.

I will be towing a 5 X 10 Hiker with a 2024 Outback Wilderness. That's when I can get my tags and Lic. Its been since December of 2023 and I still can't take our Hiker out yet, no tags, no license plate. Its been a real nightmare. Anyways working with Hiker, I did this. No fridge box, smaller toolbox up front. Spare tire up front. Raised the bottom shelf, put the goal zero and a C44 fridge in the back. This reduced my tongue weight. I've only driven it back from Lake Havasu to Bakersfield. It was well balanced and tracked really well. Dry weight 1250 LBs

Own a Tacoma and 4runner which both pull our trailer. Sherpa if you go with a rack, I made the switch from Prinsu. Also, Roam boxes are great and have been on during all winter months here in NY with zero issues, I run 2-95L boxes. 1 for recovery gear and one for miscellaneous items. Dobinsons IMS suspension with HD coils in the rear, you won’t even know you’re towing. Or, medium duty with airbags. Fridge in the right rear corner right next to the plug and fold the driver rear for longer items. Either way, you’ll love your 4runner which will last forever if maintained properly.

I have a 2023 ORD premium. I recommend looking into an SUV cargo liner. The liner protects the side walls, back seat, and flaps out when sliding fridge or equipment in and out of vehicle. Have fun with your new vehicle outfitting.

I’ve lived out of my Hiker for over a month now as I work away from home. I pull with a 2011 Sequoia (5.7L), which is quite a bit bigger than the 4Runner, but I haven’t noticed any problems. My gas mileage is essentially as expected or the same with a lightweight trailer. I pack heavy tools and other cargo. The Sequoia is high mileage (well over 200,000) and I commute two hours one way. So far so good! I’ve been commuting in the Toyota for almost a year and have towed cargo trailers with it across country in years past. I’m glad you got the older Toyota and not the new ones. I think the engine will last longer than the ones with the turbo.

Happy Spring! Welcome to the Toyota fam! My ‘21 Sienna Hybrid tows my 1900 pound 5x9 Hiker HD very easily. I get 24 mpg. I use a Curt Bluetooth wireless brake controller. I power my fridge via my EcoFlow River Pro that charges while driving via the 12v cigarette plug. I have Amazon 150 pound rated crossbars that support a 60 inch long mockins roof basket in which I keep my spare and on top of which goes my 14’ canoe. It gets the job done!

Love to see your new ride. Can’t go wrong with Toyota. I was considering a new Tacoma but ultimately I ordered a new Ford Ranger Raptor. In my search I came across a great company that makes great accessories for Toyotas. They are called Westcott Designs. I would check them out for a roof rack or other cool stuff for your 4Runner.

Congrats on the 4Runner. I have a 2016 with 304,000 miles on it. Yes, you read that right. Lots of highway miles for work. No issues at all so far. My mechanic says "don't get rid of it" . I plan on putting a Prinsu roof rack on with locking ROAM boxes. Enjoy!

I run a 2013 4Runner LTD and drag a Rockwood HW behind it. I put airbags in the rear coils to reduce the tail dragging. Full load out is probably in the 3,500+ pound range. I have no problems towing this rig and have run it all over the country.
The 4Runner turned over 200K with no major mechanical issues this year. I just did a full service on it and replaced the tires with Falven Wildpeaks. I ditched the factory 20" wheels for some aftermarket 18" wheels.
Towing I get 15mpg or so, mostly depending on wind. High winds will drop it to 12-13mpg, no wind will be 16mpg. Unladen I run about 20mpg on the highway.
I'm also a gear head mostly because I'm an amateur radio operator and do a lot of field ops. But the rig works fine for me and the dog.

I have a 2020 4runner with same trim, its been completely redone (lifted dobinson/lockoffroad long travel, full armor, rock sliders, winch. I would at least recommend stiffer springs in the rear or helper air bags for towing. (I went with dobinson heavy springs, bcuz i also keep drawers and recovery gear in at all times. (I tow a 2023 boreas xt and its perfect, almost zero squat) if you want to keep a fridge in the truck, you want to consider wiring a always on or hot outlet in the back (i wired mine on the left side) and i upgraded the 24f battery to a 27f agm x2 from batteries plus. That will run my fridge without running the 4runner or using solar for close to 48hrs and the truck will still start. I do have ut on a fridge slider to make it easy. I made a platform out of 3/4 plywood and used the 4 anchor points to bolt it down to. That way if i ever need to take rhe drawers, and fridge slider out, i could do it easily and then have my full storage

Congrats! We have a 2021 ORP similar to yours. Over the past 3 years, no issues. For what we do (not towing currently, overlanding- camping) it has been great for us. We upgraded to Falken Wildpeak tires, RCI rock sliders, RCI skids, Rhino Rack roof rack with side rails. We have an inexpensive Bouge RV fridge that we place in right rear area with a Jackery 500. That setup works for us with fridge plugged in to the Jackery and it in turn plugs in to he 400w 110v socket.
Fyi, we are considering a Hiker Trailer......😊

    I have a 2008 4Runner (244,000, going strong).
I removed the back seats completely and covered the entire back area with a 3/4 plywood platform.
I use one side of the platform for sleeping and built 42" slide out drawers and shelves on the other side for camping.
No towing yet... might save that for my next 4Runner... coming soon. HaHa

My 2016 Trail Premium was what was renamed as the TRD OffRoad Premium, so, mostly the same truck. With the Highway Deluxe, I didn’t need heavier springs or air bags, even with the big 90 liter fridge. But it weighed a lot less than your trailer.
I had the Raingler ceiling net, but I see you went with the KAON shelf (or copy) like I now have in the Land Cruiser. I liked the larger space of the net, but the shelf keeps things in place easier.
As we talked about on the phone, I went with the affordable and configurable Air Down Gear Up system for drawer and fridge with the second row removed. But you’re correct in that now we have to use Deb’s Mazda CX-5 for larger cargo…
    Enjoy the new toy!

I have a 2021 Toyota 4Runner ORD as well! Love it! No towing for me yet, just starting to look at squaredrops, but will be curious to hear your thoughts on towing as you use the 4Runner/Hiker combination more. For now, I sleep in the 4Runner for my outings.
I try to keep my 4Runner build functional, but minimal. For roof rack, take a look at the Sherpa Crestone. Amazing rack, I’ve been happy with mine. I use two Pelican rifle cases on top for additional storage (recovered tools, camp stove, straps, etc). I went Pelican instead of ROAM because I wouldn’t fit in the garage with the ROAM cases (they make quick releases, but I am a landscape photographer, and frequently leave pre-sunrise - more important for me to just get up and go).
I just bought a fridge for mine (used an Rtic cooler before). It goes on the driver’s side in the cargo area. I have the slide for it, but going to go more temporary for now as I figure out what would work best (Ieaning towards adding a small cubby to raise the fridge a bit, put the slider on it, room for storage under - but haven’t committed yet).
I have the passenger side seat bottom removed, but that’s because I sleep in it, so the extra few inches made that more comfortable. I also have a small platform to even out the 2” drop in the cargo area. That has a small sliding table I built into the one half as well for making coffee when at a spot with no tables. With a trailer, I probably wouldn’t have put any time into the platform, that was more for sleeping in it.
I use Frontrunner Wolfpacks for storage (two of them). They are modular, holds my kitchen and misc. supplies. I like them, because in a pinch, I can strap them to the roof rack to make more room inside.
    Enjoy the 4Runner!

I'll see you guys at the MOORE Expo. I'll be there with my new Hiker, but not in the barn. I'm camping in the general camping area with friends. Look for the huge ham radio antenna as we will be doing demos during the evening. I tow my Hiker with a Tacoma Sport TRD and I get around 15mpg with the Hiker. I've got 100K on the truck and it's been the most reliable car/truck I've ever owned. No roof rack as I put all my extra crap in the lockable bed.

Just and FYI, having anything on top of your truck will effect the mileage due to the drag created. Some consider it as nonconsequential. I prefer to keep my tow vehicle clean and not looking like an expensive item to steal.....lol. Just your everyday drive.....Like you said, you are camping not overlanding.

@@jamiehurd4081 My last new Jeep was a JKUR - off road and overlanding queen. 90k reliable miles before I sold her for almost as much as I paid for her new. My current overlanding rig is a 1995 Cherokee with 226k miles on her... runs like a clock. Cheap to build hold their value and last. Sorry to disappoint the Japanese auto-worshipping crowd.
