    Sometimes you have a daughter that's so amazing, even the gods fight for her hand in marriage. Son Tinh, the Mountain God and Thuy Tinh, the River God both want to marry the strong & intelligent My Nuong. The gods are both evenly matched, capable of incredible feats so the emperor poses one last trial. Whoever arrives first the next day with a suitable wedding present will get to marry his daughter. Thuy Tinh may have spent a little too much time picking out presents because by the time he arrives, My Nuong and Son Tinh are long gone. But Thuy Tinh isn't going to give up so easily...

    Im Vietnamese myself i i find this really funny and exciting even though i knew the story by heart since i was a child,so great job guys :D Actually there's one inacurate plot : When the King ( Hùng Vương ) had to decide which one can marry Mị Nương,he give both men an almost impossible challenge : They have to bring,not just fancy gift by morning,but also one 9 tusks Elephant,one 9 heels beautiful Cock,and a great 9 pink mane Horse. This challenge heavily favor Sơn Tinh btw lol cause he's is the God of mountain so he can easily find those creature (Thuy Tinh still managed to find them though so credit to him. )

      Also Vietnamese here, with a bit of clarification. The version with the elephant, the cock and the horse is the standard version taught in schools, however many earlier records do not feature this details. As much as I love the Vietnamese Myth being featured here, this story misses a crucial part which is the offerings. The king is heavily on Son Tinh side, but he wants to make it seem like a fair context. So, the offerings he wants are: a pair of 9-tusk elephants, a pair of 9-spur chickens, a pair of 9-mane horses, all of them can only be found on land. So, Thuy Tinh takes way more time to look for the offerings than Son Tinh does and he loses.

    I have to add this into the story since the challenged gifts are really iconic: 100 glutinous rice board, 100 nệp bánh chưng (aka banh chung), nine-ivory elephant, nine-spur rooster and horse with nine groups of mane hair, each bring a pair... As you can see, these are foods and animals of the land... The king have favored Sơn Tinh over Thuỷ Tinh, that’s why Thuỷ Tinh lost Mị Nương :(( Hence, reacted reasonably, I would have done the same!!
    Note: the phrase: Voi chín ngà, gà chín cựa, ngựa chín hồng mao... not just rhyme but could also be understood as “mature” creature; as they used “chín” = number nine (counting number) or mature (ripe for fruit). As one of my reply also point out, beside other mythical animals, nine-spur rooster is a thing. Shout out to my replier!!

    This story mainly indicates the power of Vietnamese people against natural disasters. Son Tinh, The Mountain God, represents the people living on the lands and mountains. While Son Tinh, The Lord of Waters, represents disasters such as: floods, hurricanes, tornados, landslide, etc.. Every year, Son Tinh returned to steal My Nuong, as every year, natural disasters came, causing floods and storms, making people suffer as they lost their family and friends. Yet in the end, Son Tinh always won. It was the undefeatable power of our people, our pride. We fight, fight and fight. Vietnamese people never gave up nor surrender to disasters Son Tinh has caused.
    That was the true meaning behind our Vietnamese myth, The Mountain God vs The Lord of Waters.

    Glad to see you guys covering Vietnamese mythology. We have a lot of great myths that I hope you will cover someday. In one version I've heard, and its not one commonly told, but Thủy Tinh and Sơn Tinh are said to be brothers, two of 100 children born to the mountain goddess Âu Cơ, and her husband the sea dragon god, Lạc Long Quân. You could say their parents' story is our famous creation myth. Âu Cơ was said to be banished from the heaven because she tasted the earth. After being rescued by Lạc Long Quân, who emerged from the sea searching for adventures, from a giant eagle, they fell in love and married. Being magical, the goddess gave birth to a large egg sac containing 100 children, said the be the first Vietnamese people, or the founder of the first 100 surnames that still exists today, whichever way you want to interpret it. But after a while, each parent misses their mountain and sea realms and decided to split up, each taking 50 children with them. Basically, they created the first divorce. Hearing this version, I'm guessing Sơn Tinh went with mom and 49 other siblings to the mountains and Thủy Tinh went to the sea with dad and the other 49 kids and didn't clash together until they try to marry Mỵ Nương.
    Aside from this, Sơn Tinh is said to be one of the Four Immortals, powerful and famous gods of Vietnam. The other three are reincarnated to earth as demigods, including Thánh Gióng, the boy who grew quickly into a man and rode a fire-breathing metal horse to battle against invaders; Chử Đồng Tử who reincarnated as a fisherman so dirt poor, that he had to share a loincloth with his father until his father's death, but he did ended up marrying a princess like Sơn Tinh (the details of how they met is kinda hilarious); and perhaps the most famous is Princess Liễu Hạnh, the daughter of the Jade Emperor who reincarnated so many times, it's kinda hard to keep track. During one of these reincarnations, the mortal king thought her so evil, powerful and dangerous that he asked Buddha to send the Eight Diamond Generals to apprehend her, but it ended up being a stalemate until Buddha intervened.

These were all land creatures so Son Tinh was able to bring them to the king in time and won Mi Nuong’s hand.

  • @photastica
    @photastica Před 3 lety +3

    In our Vietnamese folktales and education, it is clearly stated that the Hùng Kinh was bias to wed his daughter Mỵ Nương to Sơn Tinh rather than Thuỷ Tinh. The reason being, in his opinion the powers of Sơn Tinh benefit the people of Văn Lang (ancient vietnamese state) as he created mountains, settlements, farmland, livestock and of course most important of them all: trees. Trees with vietnamese is like fish with water, on the other hand Thuỷ Tinh brings flooding, typhoon and storms. This idea is backed by the wedding gift the Hùng King demanded the two gods: “ a hundred pieces of cơm nếp (sticky rice) two hundred rolls of bánh chưng (vietnamese new year food) along with elephants with nine ivory, horse with nine back hair and chicken with nine claws (all mythical animals). All of his demands can only be found on land which is an advantage for Sơn Tinh and a huge disadvantage for Thuỷ Tinh as none of them are ocean-related. In the end Sơn Tinh won and wed Mỵ Nương just like the Hùng King wanted, their marriage lasted much longer than Văn Lang and the rule of Hùng Kings.

    Hey, long time watcher here, and yo all have no idea how stoked and pleasantly surprised I am to see this pop up. Some side notes though: The most popular version of the myth says the gifts included legendary and mythical animals like the nine tusk elephant, nine spur cockerel, and a nine mane horse. Why nine ? If I remember correctly, the number nine represents eternity in Eastern cultures, Vietnamese culture included. Furthermore, from what I was taught way back in elementary school, the king himself specifically asked for those animals, as it was his subtle way of saying "I pick Son Tinh". Oh, the translations for Son Tinh & Thuy Tinh respectively were literally "Mountain Spirit" and "Water Spirit", as in, these dudes were the embodiments of the mountains and the water/sea themselves (feel free to correct me since I learned all of these more than 10 years ago). Final thing. Son Tinh also has another name- Tản Viên Sơn Thánh, or, The god of Tan Vien mountain, and he's one of the four immortals in Vietnamese mythology. Anyways, cheers, superb job and looking forward to more content.

    This captured the core mythology pretty well, but the version of the myth parents and grandparents tell me, as well as the version in written books has details, some of which would make this tale even more interesting:
    - The King is a Hung Vuong ( stands for Hung King ), a king in one of our most ancient periods
    - The gifts were very specific for both Son Tinh & Thuy Tinh: 100 trays of sticky rice ( Cơm Nếp ), 100 batches of Chung Cake ( Bánh Chưng ), elephants with 9 tusks, roosters with 9 heels, horses with 9 red manes. Another interpretation also accepts elephants, roosters and horses all with "ripe" and adult tusks/heels/red manes.
    - Because of the gift's availability, Son Tinh managed to get them all in time for the wedding. Thuy Tinh is the lord of waters, therefore securing the gifts in time was a slower endeavor, even if he also got them all as requested. Which explained his lateness to the wedding, albeit not all too late. The marriage did happen lightning fast lol
    Thank you for doing this episode of Extra Mythology, always a pleasure to listen to the tale of Son Tinh - Thuy Tinh again, and for even more people to know of it !
