Enuma Elish - Genesis of Genesis - Babylonian Myths - Extra Mythology

  • One of the oldest creation myths we know of, Enuma Elish is the tale of how the gods and humans and the world as we know it came into being. First there was nothing and then from the nothing came somethings: Apsu and Tiamat! And then they had kids. A lot of kids. A LOT of loud noisy god kids. And what else can ya do with kids but try and kill them all? Ah, mythology.

    Technically, the Enuma Elish is probably not older than writing itself. It was most likely created (in the form that we know) to justify Marduk's position as the Babylonian head deity, as his origins are more humble (probably as a god of farming), during or after Hammurabi's rule. Writing was already pretty well established at that time, even if mostly used for accounting and royal/sacral inscriptions. :)

    • @peregry
      @peregry Před 3 lety +5

      Yup, in fact, Marduk was the third deity to be slotted into the role of "slayer of Tiamat". Previous versions had Anu or Enlil being the one who killed her. In fact the question of "who slayed Tiamat" was much more tied to politics of the region than actual myths, with whichever city-state was dominate at the time claiming their patron god was the one who slew her in order to justify their dominance.

    Some context for humanity; in Babylonian philosophy and theology, humanity's purpose was only the menial labour. The Babylonians believed that humanity was a slave race made from clay to only build temples and provide offerings and pour libations. If you look at Babylonian records and documents, a good proportion of them are just lists of sacrifices made to their city's specific god (each city had its own chief god, for example Marduk got Babylon, Ishtar got Uruk, Suen got Ur etc.), because to the Babylonians that was the sole purpose of man.

    This was oversimplified so there are some error in the implications.
    When Tiamat was enraged and started a war, the gods asked Enki for help but Enki, as helpful as he usually is, doesn't want to help them any further. So the gods asked for another high ranking god, Enlil. But there are some confusing stories here since Marduk[babylonian]/Ashur[Assyrian] replaced Enlil. Marduk is the son of Enki.
    Anyway, the gods asked Enlil/Marduk to help against Tiamat. Enlil/Marduk agreed but in the condition that he will be granted as "King of Gods". Enlil/Marduk won the battle against Tiamat and thus granted with the title.
    Kingu, accomplice of Tiamat with the tablet of destiny, was then put under trial and has been sentenced to death. Enki doesn't approved of that but the sentence was delivered.
    Enlil/Marduk asked the mother of Enki about what to do next since Abzu and Tiamat is not around anymore to keep the world working. Nammu suggested that they can create laborers for the gods with the help of enki, so she woke up Enki, who has been sleeping, and told to do something about it.
    Enki approved of the idea about the creation of laborers out of clay and mud, but also used Kingu's blood to create the first human, named "Adappa".
    NOTE: there's a continuation story for this. There was a time that Enlil got bothered with humanity so much he decided to kill them with flood. Enki was the one to help to salvage humanity by informing them to create a boat that can carry their family and some of the animals around them.
    In some way, it is similar with the Bible, but Enlil/Marduk was the cause of the flood while Enki was the savior of humanity. Maybe this is why there is such a big difference in the mentality of "God" in the Old and New Testament. And interestingly, the confusion about catholic's trinity is easily solved by the existence of Anu, Enlil, and Enki.

      So, fun fact, that name alone "the Creation of Ea" is actually a reference to this myth too as the Babylonian name for "Enki" is, in fact, "Ea". The names used here are generally the Sumerian names for this story; however, there are other version of it found in Babylonian records (in fact, this is the Babylonian version of the myth, since it features Marduk who was the patron god of Babylon, there's evidence the Marduk parts of the story were added by the Babylonians to justify why they were the primary city-state of the region. In other version the Sky God Anu is the one who slays Tiamat, and in other versions Enlil, another sky god, slew her instead, with Marduk being the last in a line of claimed slayers of Tiamat. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiamat#Mythology
