I have been here in Sweden for about 4 months now and wanted to talk to you guys about some OBVIOUS yet IMPORTANT differences between Sweden and America!!! When to take your shoes off, how to do laundry, throwing away your trash properly, locking the bathroom door, grocery shopping in Sweden... and SO much more!!! There are SO many differences between the two countries and I hope to make more parts to this series!
Here are the resources I used! Check them out!!!:

The laundry room booking system may varry. In my apartment, we have that digital and have had for ~10 years. You book online and use your "digital tag key" to enter the rooms. If it's not your time, the doors wont open. :)

Keeping the laundry room clean is very important to Swedish people, the whole building hates the Erikssons from apartment 35 on the fourth floor because they never take out the fluff from the dryer 😁😉.

Very interesting Ilyssa: The thing about how to lock doors etc. here in Sweden most likely has to do with the fact that the doors you mention are security doors (or safety doors, if you will). The part (bolt?) that locks into the doorframe is much longer so you have to lift the handle for the door to lock properly. I myself didn't get one of those doors until last spring, and it took me a while to figure out how to lock it :-), having been used to the "old" way of looking doors. The shoes off when you visit someone's home is very interesting.. I get that in parts of the US where you always take your car from point A to B dirty shoes aren't really an issue. But for example in a city like New York, where you have to walk dirty streets all the time (where dogs poop without owners picking it up), shoes off should be as obligatory as here in Sweden, but to my knowledge it isn't.

Regarding the tampons. There are two brands that I know come with an applicator, Tampax and Natracare. You should be able to find them both in a regular supermarket (or at least one of the bigger ones) or a pharmacy.

Welcome to sweden! Glad you like it here. About the ac, most apartments dont have ac thats true. However, around 65-70% of the houses in sweden have air to air heating pumps, and of course they have ac mode. Plus the fact that half of sweden dont really have any use for ac, the heat and humidity are only for one to two months, and thats not worth the investment.

The cost for the small plastic produce bags is typically around $0.05 (five cents). This is mandated by a law.
The paper produce bags are normally free. The larger normal bags for your groceries may cost around $1, and you normally must pay for both the plastic and the paper ones.

In our apartment complex there was so much conflict about the laundry rooms, they got a digital system that couldn't be tampered with. People stealing each others time, disabling the time lock to use the laundry rooms in the middle of the night, a LOT of angry notes and maybe even a fist fight. The last one is just a rumor I heard though. Yeah, a lot of Swedes take laundry room time seriously, but some don't, which creates issues. 😛

A thing to consider when it comes to air conditioning is that its used more often in specific areas. As someone from the north of sweden, up here it is much more common to have an ac. Its much colder so its more common to have an ac in addition to underfloor heating and/or a fireplace.

Not sure if you have been exposed to this yet, but if a swede starts mentioning miles (mil), be aware that the swedish mile is ten kilometers. This is mostly used for driving distances, mileage in used car ads, and fuel consumption (given in liter/mil).

In southern Sweden it is not uncommon with air-air heat pumps for heating. And typically they can be reversed and work for cooling as a normal AC. However this is only for single home houses. Larger apartment complexes are often heated via district heating. Possibly fueled with thrash. So no AC.

I saw this video now haha! But something I reacted on was the tampon applicator you were talking about, like tampax. When I lived in the USA, I hated that every tampon had an applicator. I thought it was so much harder to get it in and all the time the cotton just broke. With that said I love the tampons here, also better for the environment. But ofc it has to do with what you’re used to.

To the "take your shoes of indoors", its about the climate, wet and cold outside!
There are more to it, no dress code, take your shoes of and relax, kind of thing.
Many house owners use slippers inside, even if they have heated floors.
And you forgot one thing, there should always be at least one shoe horn, in the entrace hall!
Then the laundry thing, it says that you live in an apartment, they have awsome laundry rooms, high quality machines and lot of space.
Its juste this, if one got children, and both parents working, its not enough, so one install a laundry stack (a washing machine and a tumble dryer) in the bathroom.
In newer apartments and houses there are "grovkök", it translates to "utility room" when I google it, but its the laundry room, separeted from the bathroom.. thats modern and practical!

  • @KjellEson
    @KjellEson Před 2 lety +4

Hey! You have moved from Warm temperate climate (northern United States) and
Subtropical climate (southern United States) to Boreal climate is also called
the boreal (taiga) forest zone. In America, the zone is in northern Canada and all of Greenland. Stockholm, for example, is approximately at the same latitude as southern Greenland.
We have been hot for about a month (if we are lucky) so installing AC is a waste of money.
Sweden is divided into eight plant zones. Some plants in southern Sweden Zone 1 does not grow in Zone 3 but may grow in Zone 2.
In northern Sweden Zones 6 - 8 there are archaic plants that can not grow in southern Sweden.
You can not plant a palm tree outdoors in Southern Sweden. It would freeze to death.
Northern Florida is located at the same latitude as southern Morocco and northern Egypt. LA is at the same latitude as Iran.
If you live in Spain, it is the same latitude as New York.
What I want to tell you, which unfortunately makes many people move from Sweden after a few years, is that you live in an Arctic country.
The advantage is that the air is very clean and the water is still reasonably clean. Four Seasons. Sweden's nature rests for about 4 to 5 months.
Wakes up and becomes summer. Fall asleep in the fall and become a long winter.
I hope you stay despite our rather inclement weather.
People from Australia who move to Sweden are grateful to avoid
    +35 - +45 ° C during the day and - 2 ° C at night.
It takes just as short a time to get used to the cold as it takes to get used to the heat.
I've traveled around the United States 16,000 Miles and was going crazy from the heat sometimes.
Ps. Many Swedes have a washing machine in the apartment.

On the subject of burning garbage for heating I'd just like to ad that the exaust/smoke frome the burning is being filtered, so there's no big amount of toxic or environmentaly damaging substances being released during this process. I think they filter co2 pretty good as well. Been a few years since I looked in to the subject, didn't go that deep either. What always bugs me tho is what do they do with those filters they use when they're full of the essence of incinerated human waste?

You mentioned garbage in your video! We haven't always sorted garbage😅. We started 10 - 15 years ago with the brown bags various garbagebins if you have chosen it as an alternative in your home. There we sort food, hard/soft plastic, metal, newspapers, white and colored glass and residial waste. And if it is environmental waste, we take it to the various en vitonmental stations we have around the country. In the past we exhibited in the forest or mega big waste/garbage disposal/dumps such as car batteries, broken tv's, and cars😥, but that was 35- 40 years ago😁, now we take care of everything at an environmental station and recycles😇😄. How do you do inte US with recycling and do you like us have environmental stations?
