I have been eying a cold drop or chop saw for years. So far I have been using cordless cold cut circular saws. They have worked well although sometimes takes a bit of setting up. As for piping, I had to make a template to cut on a 45. Also I was planning on building a template for repetitive cuts and using on various size rectangle hollow section or square hollow section. These are the main materials I used for my builds. Cutting angle iron on the more harder steel the life of my blade may wear quicker. I killed a blade cutting steel plate. The reason I put a fence (guide rail ) on a steel sheet and on sacrificial timber. The blade didn't like cutting through the timber and must have got too hot which made the blade ineffective. I had since left one side at the edge of the table so there was no resistance. All these things when experimenting on trying different ways. Some don't work quite as well as you plan. Same cutting sheet metal like corrugated iron using a guide rail. The sheets need to be clamped in such a way the sheets don't rattle. Also cutting along a corrugated sheets avoiding movement is a task when using guide rail system. The right blade is also imperative as I found out I lost a few teeth on the thicker material cutting blade. However using the other blades I had wasn't any different. This made me have a good look at blades specifically designed for sheet metal or corrugated iron. I have had 50% success. Its not something I do often or hardly at all. Nevertheless it would be ideal if you had the right equipment at hand and the right setup.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I had one guy asking me to cut with wood and I said no the blade is not made for cutting wood it’s for steel . Thanks
Hi mate, out of the box my saw has never cut straight square edges. There is always slight waves and unevenness. It doenst matter if its round, square or right angle steel. Am I am being too picky or should all cut surfaces be smooth and flush?
This makati works great no issues should not be doing that. The blade is the problem I think? What is your make? Carbide blade should last a long time. Thanks for sharing
Makita is definitely the superior model out of any cold cut chop saw. I agree, it's a welcome addition to any shop. Nice review.
