- Chevy Chase was a bonafide comedy movie star throughout the 1980s. But he yearned to show audiences his dramatic side. So he began development on a movie about a lonely man who turns invisible. The project began with director Ivan Reitman & screenwriter William Goldman onboard. They clashed with Chase and fled. Years later, it finally got made with John Carpenter at the helm. The result was an expensive, very visible mess.
Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)
Produced by Warner Bros.
Directed by John Carpenter
Written by Robert Collector, Dana Olsen & William Goldman (early drafts)
Starring Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah, Sam Neill and Michael McKean

Underrated Carpenter and Chase film.
I love this film.... I never understood why it got so much hate.
Some of it is very compelling. There's some good scenes and the effects are top notch even by today's standards. But it becomes one long chase scene by the end.
@@hollywoodvulture but don't you think Terminator and Terminator 2 are one long chasing as well? Those movies don't get that much hate for it.
Yeah I really like it a lot.
@@davidlipscomb6345 How bout ET, Starman, & Cat From Outer Space
I liked the movie as a kid, havent seen it since then. I was impressed with the special effects, and yes with the invisible chase scene as well. Now i have to Check it out again, if i still like it.
There's a lot of good stuff in it. It drags at the end, though. The effects still look cool.
I agree with most of the favorable comments made about this movie. I really liked it and didn’t question the details like why the dirt under his fingernails was not visible. Characters, story line, special effects… all worked for me.
And the most unrealistic detail: Why would Daryl Hannah be madly in love with him after one encounter at lunch?
@@hollywoodvulture Density? Oops, I mean destiny? 😉
Loved this movie & still do has a certain something about it. 80s & 90s movies are the best.
It does have a certain something. A cozy noirish feel. Perfect afternoon nap movie.
I loved this film. It’s criminally underrated. The book is great as well but very different.
What're you talking about?! This movie was great.
I can't argue with you there, hahaha. My opinion is definitely subjective. There's a good hour in there somewhere.
i wonder if someone who wasnt happy with the movie at least 2/3 in was yelling at the box office saying "I want the molecules of my 10$ ticket money back!'
That's how I felt. 😄🤣
I will defend this film to the ends of the earth. The special effects still really hold up, the score is downright magical, and Carpenter's direction was as crisp and focused as ever.
This is unironically a top ten film for me.
I just watched it and I really love this movie!
I really hope your channel blows up, great quality. Good watch as always.
Thanks a lot. I'm glad you're enjoying the content!
Why didn't it succeed at the box office? Was there something else that ate up all of the profits those weeks, or were audiences just unwilling to accept Chevy Chase in a Sci-Fi Action role?
Wayne's World was dominating the box office the weekend Memoirs opened. So people were in the mood for comedy. And a week later, The Lawnmower Man came out. Which ate up the Sc-Fi crowd.
I love almost all Chevy Chase movies and I don't know why the ones he made in the 1990s didn't make money and are considered not good I think they are great movies 🎬🎭📼🆒
He was at his best in the 80's with being Clark Griswald & Irwin Fletcher.

This film is surprisingly underrated. Despite its reliance on special effects and many flaws, it harbors the essence of a great movie. I wish the script had been less bland and infused with more comedy. Nonetheless, it was ahead of its time, beautifully capturing the backdrop of San Francisco pre-October 1989. Overall, it's a remarkable film.
It was post '89 earthquake! This film was made in '92.
@@Music-tk5oq I know! But The Embarcadero Freeway 🛣️ is clearly seen in the opening credits of The Film 🎞️
@@michwashington Wouldnt know. Never been there or anywhere out west.
Chevy Chase was the Ryan Reynolds of the 80's.
I will say that whether people liked the film or not, the visual effects were super neat, and how they accomplished the desired effects was neat too. I thought Chevy was decent in the part since even as a funny man, he has also played the straight everyday man times. I just feel like something was missing here since he wasn’t doing any comedy routines.
I love it too! Great 90s fun and the jokes landed perfectly. It's got that Family Guy type humor. It has a lot of references and I think some people like slapstick and fart jokes more than witty quips.
It isn’t a ridiculous line and it makes sense for the character to say that . 7:29
❤ I subscribe because of this video
Those 2 names just don't seem to go together...😂
I vaguely remember this movie, it would be on network television a lot back in the day, along with nothing but trouble. Both movies had serious production issues. The problem with this movie is that it’s very forgettable because nothing significant or impressive ever happens, except the special effects. It still comes off as a somewhat low key comedy because of its cheesy dialogue. To me it seems like these movies were geared more towards kids and teens rather than adults. Cops and Robbersons was strike three for Chase’s big movie career sadly. I don’t think anyone could recover from 3 major flops in a row, except maybe Steven Segal.
Super film !! This tired bored narrator voice trying to be clever , is talking negative tripe he/ she/ it/ is Obviously NOT a Sci Fi fan . Chevy is great and the special effect are fantastic .
In short, your review is spot on (sadly). Obviously, this film had tremendous potential but without any clear focus, story-arches were too constricted, while others, dichotomously, morphed wildly. Proof once again that despite a lavish score, great special effects, a big budget, etc., etc.. a "good movie" needs a "good story." Like all great ball players who occasionally strike out, or competent Lawyers who sometimes lose, outstanding directors can make mistakes too.
NARRATOR IS WRONG . . GOOD MOVIE
Other than the first vacation movie and caddyshack, all of his other movies sucked
fletch was good and spies like us even foul play this is agood film I thought
I would probably say his worst movie is either Man of the House or Oh Heavenly Dog.
@@davidcoombsbestmegadethalb9780 Funny Farm is also underrated.
@@davidcoombsbestmegadethalb9780 When I was a Kid Spies Like Us was Hilarious! Haven't seen it in years! Cheers Mate 🍻
