Rebuilding Beetle Rear Brakes, Transmission and Modified Pan. Almost...

  • It's Wifey Wednesday! Time to do some more work on the Renault/VW Beetle project. In this round, we start by rebuilding the rear brakes and replacing rear axle oil seals. This leads to removing the complete swing axle transmission for clean up and paint. That done, it escalates into repainting the floor pan! First we finish some outstanding welding on the shortened floor pan and discover some bad rust which required welding in a new panel. Finally I could clean up the floor pan with grinder and wire brushes, and apply a rust converter and primer. Then, overnight, rain and cold suddenly stopped play...

    Div, love the way you work man, doing the hard graft like most of us out here have to. A man who leads by example is always appreciated.
    It's getting "colder, colder, colder, simply because you're getting older, older, older", and if you're at all like us other seniors, you've just forgotten how cold it was last year. (Or that's what my wifey keeps telling me).Cheers mate.

    Hey Div,
    I think it is nice that you have a friend like the barefoot mechanic to help you work on your projects.
    Those brakes should be done well as your misses is going to be depending on them soon.
    Some people really dislike cleaning up old parts such as that floor pan.
    Myself, I enjoy doing such work because I know it is going to make the finished project look so much nicer.
    I want to be proud of my work, even if I am the only one seeing it.

    The NS1 probably contains phosporic acid which eats rust and turns it into iron phosphate which makes the meatl turn black.
    The iron phosphate is water resistant and prevents oxygen from getting to the steel.
    You can even make rust cobverter yourself by mixing phospohric acid (to get a 25-30% dilution with water) and some ethanol to act as a surfactant... work also great...I did rebar mat fencing that way...

    PS. In the UK we have something called Vactan as rust converter. Possibly the same formula.

  • @RosarioSound
    @RosarioSound Před 4 měsíci +1

    Normally these rust converters contains phosphoric acid which converts both elemental iron and iron oxide (rust) into iron phosphate which is not porous as iron oxide and therefore creates a protecting layer on the surface. The idea with zinc primers is similar although the chemistry differs and it doesn't react with rust.
    I've used these rust converters a lot in my restoration projects. Another benefit is that they're water soluble and it means you can rinse the brush in the tap and use it over and over again. Normally I have a dedicated brush for this since it tends to be ruined by the harsh treatment when stuffing it upp small cavities and such. According to the label of the products I've used, its recommended to pour the amount you're working with in a non metal container to not get contaminants in the can, I don't know how important that actually is, but I use a glass jar for this purpose.
    Thanks for a great and as always instructive show. Still using the fireplace here in Sweden despite its supposed to be spring now, saw snowflakes today... brr...

    Some of the best time on a project is sitting and pondering about the project. As far as the science of NS1 rust converter, the Tech Data sheet shows it contains Tannins "Tannic acid is a complex organic acid (found in plants). It reacts with rust to form iron tannate (or ferric tannate) [...] the final surface is a stable and protective polymeric coating"

    • @Mick-sq4lr
      @Mick-sq4lr Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hi,
      Yeah Man!And I add that tannins, polyphenolic compounds, derived from tannic acid have properties that inhibit ferrous metals. They act by forming complexes on the surface of metals: with trivalent iron, tannic acid forms an insoluble blue-black complex.Tannins, derived from gallic acid and other polyphenolic acids, are not exactly acids, but they result from the esterification, by these acids, of the alcoholic functions of glucose. Consequently, this esterification being a balanced reaction, there remain these glucoses in this mixture which we call tannin...And to conclude, the use of tannins as corrosion inhibitors should not be confused with the use of tannic acid as a rust stabilizer, often mixed with phosphoric acid which acts as a rust converter.

    Great job on the clean up and priming of those parts. Something that is done in some parts of U.S.A. is mixing chainsaw bar and chain oil 50/50 with kerosine and spraying it with a pump up sprayer inside the frame rails to coat the metal with oil. The kerosine evaporates and leaves the oil behind. You can spray it on the underside of the whole vehicle and it will collect dust and form a weatherproof coating on the underside.

    8:00 There's supposed to be a circlip beside the washer. It looks like the circlip is missing. If so, the washer will move on the shaft to where it was before.

    Dear Dif
    👍👌👏 Very well done again (video and work). 2) I'm sure that you know how for instance whales and bears keep themselves warm. You once called yourself a skinny goat. With no layer of fat you will freeze, even more the older you get. That's at least my excuse for having a winter type body/figure since 2 decades (especially because I'm a big bear type guy). But seriously: I have almost never and still don't feel cold but my joints/muscles/tendons/ sciatic nerve seems to feel different now. Or it might also be that climate change thing!? 😁 ;-)
    Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.

    Looking Good Div, some good products you mentioned, have to try them out. I wire wheeled my diff, what a pain in the "you now where." I using Process 404, rust treatment and then hammed hammerite. Will see how it holds up... Thank you for sharing. What you going to do about the missing spring retainer on the brake back plate. Like to see if you plug the oversized hole, drill and file for the new pin.

    • @ratrodsafrica
      @ratrodsafrica  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I tried welding it, too tricky... Think I will just stay with the bolt for now🙂 I've been playing with Hammerite for a long time now and have since discovered that the smooth Hammerite lasts much better. The "fish eyes" in the hammered one actually creates weak spots where rust starts first

    We have similar rust converter products like Jenolite or Kurust and they're a type of acid that reacts with the oxides and leave a protective coating. That's what the product looks like? My mate recently put Jenolite in an aerosol and it exploded because of some sort of reaction between the acid and the gas propellant 😮. What a mess it made!

    Good work, Div. Curious question, as geography can be an interesting subject to me. I believe you've mentioned that you're near Mossel Bay. In the last clip, what was the temperature? I assume you shot this a few days ago and I am curious as to relative temps. For context, I'm just outside Toronto, Canada. Over the last few days, our average daily high has been about 15⁰C, but cooler today. While I'm a distance north of the equator, you're rather south. Basically, I'm looking to see if you "freezing your ass off" is anything close to my "freezing my ass off" lol
    Enjoying the videos as always!

    • @ratrodsafrica
      @ratrodsafrica  Před 4 měsíci +1

      No brother, I think your cold is way worse than mine! It is relative to what one is used to... It's not supposed to be winter here yet. We had an intense cold front with lots of rain and temp dropped to around 5 deg C. In the middle of winter, we can drop to a little less than 0 overnight, but typically it goes up to around 15 during the day. We never get any snow, just the occasional morning frost. I live in a little valley, 30km inland from Mossel Bay. There, the climate is more temperate
