Thanks to you, I did a variation on this successfully! I placed a slice of potato I had scored on one side in a container of compost I got from my garden pile. I punched a few holes in the lid, stored the container on the floor of my garage to prevent freezing and waited 3-4 weeks. When the potato started to decompose, I noticed the surface looked slimy. When I checked with a hand lens, I saw the micro worms. Next I scraped the worms off and placed them in some cooked oatmeal. Let them reproduce, then voila! Saved me $12 plus shipping!

I didn't expect this to work, but it did! I buried 5 potato haves partially hallowed out with hole down across my yard (Arkansas) and marked them with white flags, left them for about 6 days, then dumped them into a large jar with oatmeal, yeast, misted with spray bottle. I forgot about them for a couple weeks with a coffee filter lid, and checked expecting nothing, to see it FILLED with micro worms. :D So I'm going to split the mega culture into smaller containers and supplement my betta fry. I red too much microworms causes them not to develop correctly though.

This is (as far as I know) the original method for starting a microworm culture (make a hole in a potato and bury it in soil outdoors). It’s mentioned in aquarium books from the mid-20th century. Of course, your job is a lot easier if you can get a starter from someone who is already culturing microworms. But if you can’t, do this.

No, you can't. Because the starter is very stinky and maybe can break down the water parameters... You need to culture it in culture media and then harvest the worm that crawl out from the culture media ... It safer I think ...
