      @@saramcgaha1406 because the R&D was publicly funded. Yes he developed the vaccine, but it’s not like he was paying for lab supplies, experiments, etc. out of his own pocket. It was all taxpayer dollars. He couldn’t have patented it even if he wanted to.
      Either way, Dr. Salk is, and always will be, a hero.

      Yes and the anti vaccers now don’t appreciate the gift they got as normal, polio vacc/ routine. To be able to walk and talk and object! They were only babies when their parents made sure they got the benefits, like my kids did. Just imagine their kids living with the fear of polio.

    you know when I talked to my dad about this interview, I said "Jonas salk didn't patent the vaccine cause he said it was for everyone, he chose not to profit from it". my dad said "no, he forgot to patent it, he didn't CHOOSE to not profit from it, nobody is that stupid not to make $ from such a great invention".
    my dad is a banker. it just shows you how greedy and shameless people in his profession is. I lost a ton of respect for my dad that day. even to this day when he calls me and asks me to have dinner with him, many times i say "I'm busy". but in all honestly i just can't stand talking to someone as greedy as him.

      @@lobelia2, please remember that in psychology, the best way to treat a characterstic is to look back at how it occurred in the first place, where it derived from. Your comment says more about your avoidant type of behaviour rather than his greediness. Think about it this way, have you ever had a real conversation with your father? A conversation at a high level about his childhood the effects of his life to who he is today. Why he thinks a certain way? Getting rid if him just because he is different is not any better than "being greedy".
      I want to give you another thought, have you ever heard of hoarders? They are greedy on whole another level, yet they have and find themselves so many reasons for what they're doing. The only treatment of minimising it's effects is to start with the cause, which is always trauma.

    An admirable view from a brilliant yet humble man.
    What he should have asked, however, was "WOULD you patent the sun?"
    There are plenty of ruthless individuals out there who would jump at the chance to slap a patent on sunlight and make it a restricted commodity if it were possible.
    Altruistic geniuses like Jonas Salk are sadly a rarity in the world.

    We should be deeply proud of having people like Salk (and Sabin) among our species. But lets be optimistic: there are more of them to come.

    P.S: There is a little mistake on this video: in the minute 0:55 there is an image of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) which is not the one designed by Salk, it was made by Sabin (it was more efficient than IPV, it was the one which really helped to nearly eradicate polio).

    I doubt that Salk would have been happy that the emphasis was on him in this clip. It is clear to me that his priority was the advancement of knowledge and its benefits for all.
    We all did this together. And while Salk is an incredibly gifted and kindhearted individual whom we should be thankful for, we should never that our fates are in the hands of a single man.

    What an amazing man, seriously this is just a very very amazing man. I don't know why people always glorify and admire people like Napoleon, Hitler, Hussien, Che Guevara or even Dalai Lama which he had good intentions but did little for people in an overall sense etc etc and real amazing people like Jonas Salk are easily forgotten.
