- When asked who owned the patent on his vaccine against poliovirus, its inventor Jonas Salk famously responded: "The people, I would say. There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" The Salk Vaccine is used worldwide to this day.

"Could you patent the sun?" Will always be my favorite and best remembered quote.
Beautiful quote. I agree.
They removed the youtube vide where Dr Salk says, "My vaccine gave they polio." If you ever find that please
archive it. I had it and now cannot find it.
Wasn't there prior art preventing him from obtaining the patent? Sorry if that may have ruined the quote for you... People are complex.
@@aramaswa4 There wasn't
There is a patent on the sun. Just look it up.
He had a clear shot at billionaires club but he let it go for the sake of humanity, Glad he was no Martin Shkreli.
He could have used the profit for R&D to make new life saving drugs. But let's be clear, Salk couldn't have patented the vaccine even if he wanted to.
KeeGeeK this is where I’m done with speculation and I want to ask why. Why don’t you think the scientist responsible for the polio vaccine could not profit or truthfully WOULD not profit from his vaccine?
@@saramcgaha1406 because the R&D was publicly funded. Yes he developed the vaccine, but it’s not like he was paying for lab supplies, experiments, etc. out of his own pocket. It was all taxpayer dollars. He couldn’t have patented it even if he wanted to.
Either way, Dr. Salk is, and always will be, a hero.
@@wyatt2137 Doesn't matter, he could've still patented the vaccine and he refused!
@@keegeek5100 Covid time and everyone is protecting the patents while potentially millions can die in India alone as they get ravaged virus
Decline the patent and lose massive stacks of cash, but gain immortality by generations of people that don't know what polio is but know who he was. Yeah, fair trade probably. This guy is a legend.
Yes and the anti vaccers now don’t appreciate the gift they got as normal, polio vacc/ routine. To be able to walk and talk and object! They were only babies when their parents made sure they got the benefits, like my kids did. Just imagine their kids living with the fear of polio.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha vaccination is for low iq donkeys who are cowards in natural life and lack every bit of realistic knowledge.
The epitome of low iq- vaccination
I guess it's sad that only people in the field will know about it as polio is exterminated all over the world except Pakistan and Afghanistan
why have we fallen so far away from this ideology?
eblb1ful2 I think its greed in general. People can't get enough money :/
+Matthew Baran Yep! You don't have to be a Jew or of any specific creed to fall victim of greed and corruption.
+Matthew Baran Corporate greed and accepting higher levels of narcissism.
Jess Whallon Yep.
Right, except Jonas Salk, the guy who inoculated polio for an entire generation, is also Jewish. Nice logic though.
“Could you patent the sun?” (2020)
What a beautiful human being!
Juan Pena i have zero words.
beautiful?
the guy was pure cancer with his poison causing the 1 disease that exists: toxemia.

A hero and legend of humanity. His contributions to public health are extraordinary. Love him.
Very much agreed.
All humanity owes to this man... He saved the world...he is the real superhero..
We need him now in 2020
No, he'd be laughed out of the boardroom.
He'd have been executed for refusing a patent
that is a fucking great man. a great contributor to humanity. today everything is patented, even the design of a cell phone. but this man came up with a cure for one of the deadliest diseases of the 20th century and he did not profit from it. that's pure respect.
Could Salk have profited from it if he wanted to?
@@keegeek5100he could’ve had millions , if not billions of dollars
I'm in tears ngl. Why can't we just think above money and capital. Why don't we give the humanity, what it gave us.
Afterall aren't we just one family, one species?
Be the change
We need more noble and dedicated people like Jonas Salk...a man for the ages.
If only FDR had lived a bit longer to discover the miracle that was Jonas Salk.
We need him now. STAT.
An altruistic human being who cared about all of humanity.
A great man that we need to respect
To say the least. Can you name a greater man in all of human history?
Agreed
@@anthonypape6862 no the greatest man in all of human history is Mohamed the Massinger of Allah

Truly great man. I too wish for more people like him, let us strive to be like him.
"Could you patent the Sun?"
THANK YOU DR SALK
Some people are just destined to change the world. Thank you Dr. Salk!!
Capitalism: "Profit is the motivation for innovation"
Salk: "Hold my vaccine"
The ultimate anti Martin Shkreli.
This reminds me of that wonderful Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns blocks out the sun. 'My nemesis, providing everyone with free light, heat and energy.' We're not too far from this now, with that Nestlé CEO wanting to privatise water.
EDUCATION THAT TEACHES GREED
CANT CURE HUMANITY OF DISEASE
THANK YOU DR SALK.............I AM NOT A POLIO PARAPLEGIC FOR YOU
AND YOU DID NOT CHARGE A DIME FOR THAT LITTLE FAVOUR
you know when I talked to my dad about this interview, I said "Jonas salk didn't patent the vaccine cause he said it was for everyone, he chose not to profit from it". my dad said "no, he forgot to patent it, he didn't CHOOSE to not profit from it, nobody is that stupid not to make $ from such a great invention".
my dad is a banker. it just shows you how greedy and shameless people in his profession is. I lost a ton of respect for my dad that day. even to this day when he calls me and asks me to have dinner with him, many times i say "I'm busy". but in all honestly i just can't stand talking to someone as greedy as him.
lobelia2 Shouldn't get caught up on one comment, it's what he was taught to do in his profession. Unless there are other issues under the surface I wouldn't let one comment ruin family.
nah it's not just one comment. he does all kinds of things that shows me how greedy he is.
lobelia2
Thought there might be.
@@lobelia2 but is your father, after all. Is the only one you have.
@@lobelia2, please remember that in psychology, the best way to treat a characterstic is to look back at how it occurred in the first place, where it derived from. Your comment says more about your avoidant type of behaviour rather than his greediness. Think about it this way, have you ever had a real conversation with your father? A conversation at a high level about his childhood the effects of his life to who he is today. Why he thinks a certain way? Getting rid if him just because he is different is not any better than "being greedy".
I want to give you another thought, have you ever heard of hoarders? They are greedy on whole another level, yet they have and find themselves so many reasons for what they're doing. The only treatment of minimising it's effects is to start with the cause, which is always trauma.
This is something that our education system seems to be missing these days
That's what I call a hero. Great humanist. And now we see all those no names sticking to those great scientists who worked for humanity

Actually he turned earth in to heaven by his invention of polio vaccine
i love this video every-time i see it , i would not be here today if it was not for this man
A true scientist and philosopher. We need more people like him.
Agreed wholeheartedly
I love that it was Murrow who asked the legendary Doctor Salk that question. Brings a tear to my eye every time.
Rip Dr Salk . You were a great man. We need people like you .
I heard some impressive sentence once time, "Great soldier saves his country, great scientist saves humankind." and the writer examples Dr.salk the great scientist. No one can refute this perfect sentence:))
Huge respects for this remarkable and humble man.
A Legend in true sense.
We were also fortunate to have a humane inventor of the World Wide Web who chose to make it free and available to everyone.
Thank you Dr. Salk.
Thank You Dr. Salk!
An admirable view from a brilliant yet humble man.
What he should have asked, however, was "WOULD you patent the sun?"
There are plenty of ruthless individuals out there who would jump at the chance to slap a patent on sunlight and make it a restricted commodity if it were possible.
Altruistic geniuses like Jonas Salk are sadly a rarity in the world.
Like would you . . . . if you could?
We should be deeply proud of having people like Salk (and Sabin) among our species. But lets be optimistic: there are more of them to come.
Thank you Mr. Salk.
P.S: There is a little mistake on this video: in the minute 0:55 there is an image of the oral polio vaccine (OPV) which is not the one designed by Salk, it was made by Sabin (it was more efficient than IPV, it was the one which really helped to nearly eradicate polio).
This is what Pfizer and Moderna should watch.
Dr. You have a new admirator
The single greatest hero of the last century. Saved and improved hundreds of millions of lives.
Thank you, Dr.Salk.
My mom was an intern BEFORE the vaccine.Terrible, Parents had to be told----"nothing we can do."
I doubt that Salk would have been happy that the emphasis was on him in this clip. It is clear to me that his priority was the advancement of knowledge and its benefits for all.
We all did this together. And while Salk is an incredibly gifted and kindhearted individual whom we should be thankful for, we should never that our fates are in the hands of a single man.
True. But it's also true his generosity has to be remembered
People like Jonas Salk and Alexander fleming will always remain as legends. They never patented their revolutionary discoveries just to help the world. Thank you very much. RIP
Thank you Dr. Salk
The world needs scientists like him more
Most scientists already agree. We need the public to wake up.
He's a hero & i wish more people out of the basic sciences fields knew about him!
