Many promo films were made in the 50's/60's, to encourage post-war interest in air travel.....this one stands out as one of the best; you don't need to understand German to appreciate it. Production values are excellent with great air-to-air shots of the best prop airliner ever made....oh to be a passenger back then!
I remember flying in a TWA Constellation as a kid in the 50s. It was a comfortable plane and I remember the seats were so comfortable. We flew over the Grand Canyon and the pilot circled a few time so we could get a good view. Shortly after, they stopped doing this because of a collision between two airliners. I remember friendly service. Now, they pack you in like sardines and our major airplane manufacturer cuts corners to save money and allowed 346 people to die in interest of profit. Everything I have read about Lufthansa is this airline is high quality, efficient and very safe. You got what you paid for there.
I am german and avoid the LH when I can, got a flying blue account. It has become cumbersome and Germany is gonna become a shithole cuntry as well. Emigration is on the horizon and sure I will emigrate with the Lufthansa, to remind me properly of never coming back.
Drang da gerade angenehmer Flug an mein Ohr ? Gut 15 Stunden nach New York mit Zwischenlandung in Gander. TOLL ! Reiseflughöhe 4.100 Meter, also genau dort wo die meisten Turbulenzen stattfinden. As time goes by.
Adding my voice to the choir of 'ah, the good old days' when flying was an event! You dressed, you had manners, you knew how to act in public. I'm glad they did away with smoking on planes as it never made any sense to have two sections. I actually was a smoker when they had this go into effect. Now you can barely get your suitcase on a plane and have it arrive at the same destination. People are rude, seats are thin and uncomfortable and the crew is all stressed out.

In main cabin you cannot even use your laptop/tablet if the person in front of you reclines. When I fly, I book really early and pay extra for the exit seats.
When I was a child in the 1960’s my family started to fly to Spain for our holidays. Every flight was exciting. All passengers were smartly dressed, no jeans, trainers or scruffy clothes. It was just like on this video. On the down side, it was noisy, everyone smoked and the cabins weren’t well pressurised. Many people vomited so ‘sick bags’ were in every seat pocket. I remember one flight where were all passengers started to get pains in the ears. Turned out the rear door wasn’t properly closed. Answer - the plane descended and carried on the journey at a lower altitude. Madness!
The ultimate development of the famous Constellation, and one of the last and greatest of the piston-powered airliners (along with the Douglas DC-7). Lufthansa marketed its Starliners as "Super Stars."
VARIG Brasil had a fleet of 6 L1049 Super Gs. Four were dismantled almost at the same time, one in Congonhas Airport Base the other three in Porto Alegre Maintenance Headquarters. I can't barelly imagine the process of turning 4 perfect aircrafts in a pile of junk. It too hapenned soon after to Convair 240 fleet. Very sad.
In the late 70's and early 80's I was lucky enough to get this treat four times on board a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar in service for the LTU on our regular vacation flights to Ibiza. I cherish those memories to this day.
Believe it or not, but on a recent TAP Air Portugal flight from DUS to LIS (TP541 on 10/10/21) a girl of about 15 was allowed to be in the cockpit for the final forty minutes of the flight, landing included. As a 200k/year Star Gold FF I was quite flabbergasted to see that and do not recall seeing anything like it anywhere in the last 15 years.
I agree that being on a plane during the 1950s was a good experience. Friendly staff on the ground and in the air who were friendly and willing to assist. And oh how I missed the comfortable seats and the LEGROOM!!! My first time on a plane was a Stratocruiser but I was on a Constellation and Super Constellation as well as others. These were CONFORTABLE, you know, no cramped cabins, bad food and lousy on-time performance.
gosh talk about a time that was simple, without all this high tech stuff.....a time when people were normal and had manners, values and respect.....how i wish it could be like that again. it really was just a different time....
There was high-tech stuff back then - to a certain degree - in the form of airborne radar. Lockheed equipped its Starliners and Model G Super Constellations with either Bendix or RCA weather radar, depending on the operator's choice.
You are absolutely right! I was a flight attendant with Lufthansa from 1982 - 2015 and had the honor to meet their former flight attendant No. 1, Mrs. Kathke. She joined Lufthansa in 1955 and later changed to flight attendant training dept. I met her during my initial training and she was truly a Grande Dame of aviation and was highly respected by the entire company. She represented all the glamour aviation was like in that movie, as you said, normal people with good manners, values and respect. Unfortunately she passed away many years ago, and with her, all the simple things and different times were gone, too. But as a passenger today, good manners, values and respect should never go out of fashion. Even with all this high tech stuff.
Nice promo, but remember it was filmed on the ground, 4,100m wasn’t so smooth of a flight and four large piston engines made a lot of noise! Lots of flying around clouds and storms. My Father flew a Flying Tigers DC-7 from Hamburg to Idlewild back in 1956 with two stops in Greenland and Gander, 8,000 ft was max altitude, at night all he could see were flames coming out of the engines.
It's kind of amazing to me looking at this in 2021 how short the reign of the Constellation really was. I'm 60 years old, and the Boeing 747 was just retired from passenger service last year. I remember reading about the debut flight of the 747 when I was in first grade. (By the way, this is the best quality VHS rip that I've ever seen. )

Ironically, at the time this film was made, Lufthansa couldn't fly in or out of Berlin. That was because West Berlin was located within East Germany, which only allowed airlines of the 4 countries that had occupied their portion of the city at the end of World War II to use the airport.

I remember very well the days they wrote tickets by hand before computers and printers. Every ticket had 3 carbon copies. The agent had to press hard. As you can see the Germans kept their aircraft in pristine condition.
Very different times, those tickets would have been hugely expensive compared to now. No GPS for the pilots either, long served old fashioned navigation.
The golden age of air travel, sixty years later it's not so glamorous is it. Lufthansa only operated four Starliners and a couple of years later with the arrival of the Boeing 707 the Starliner was pushed on to less important Lufthansa routes.
Very true and certainly compared with UK, but the Germans were given much encouragement and finance from USA and above all worked so hard for their deserved post war success at this time.
@@SDD3204 the U.K. also received finance from the USA under the Marshall Plan after WWII. I think the difference is that West Germany only had one way to go - onward and upwards without looking back. People in the U.K. however continue to bang on about winning WWII (usually overlooking the fact we were part of the Allied Forces which won together)
@@michduncg It seems I fell for the myth that UK did not get Marshall Plan Aid after the war, and that such MP aid was purely aimed at European countries in danger of becoming Communist, through their austerity. UK was not only psychologically burdened with looking backwards but with unrealisable feelings of current post war responsiblilities for the Empire and the desire to maintain their world prestige. UK was bankrupt and yet burdened with responsibilities and massive wartime loans from USA to pay back too. The thread of a nuclear attack from the east was also very high in our priorities too and I believe 50% of UK's rather meagre GDP was devoted to defence for many years too. Then there was the imementation of The Beveridge Plan, NHS and Welfare post war too. I certainly found the contrast in wealth and appearances between UK and WG in 1963 quite extraordinary as a 7 year old. IMHO UK did not catch up post-war until firmly in EEC/EU under Tony Blair gd&r...
By 1955, West Germany had already overtaken the UK in terms of GDP. The Marshall Plan played a rather small role in this, however, and it was only loans that had to be repaid. The UK received the funds of the Marshall Plan as a gift from the USA. A big problem for the UK was that after WW2 it was no longer possible to exploit the colonies to the same extent as before.

Yeah, the Connie was more exotic while the DC-7 was more elegant, the latter being my favorite of the two.
Very sad.
When it was OK for children to see the cockpit.
In the late 70's and early 80's I was lucky enough to get this treat four times on board a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar in service for the LTU on our regular vacation flights to Ibiza. I cherish those memories to this day.
Then same "poor refugees" fleeing war and violence in their homecountries came along and we started worrying about our safety.
Up to the 1970s it was Lufthansa standard to invite the kids to the cockpit.
The days of gracious and even Luxe air travel... ahhhh memories.
Now we have
Ahhhh. The "Mad Men" golden era of commercial flight!
black people didn't fly so much back then
gosh talk about a time that was simple, without all this high tech stuff.....a time when people were normal and had manners, values and respect.....how i wish it could be like that again. it really was just a different time....
It was only for very rich people to fly like that
@@tsnovak20 and few middle class people.
@@alcideslages8326 yeah, but for middle class it was more like a once in a lifetime experience
Wonderful video a time of elegance and style and Lufthansa a class airline.

Great video. Thanks for posting this.
It's kind of amazing to me looking at this in 2021 how short the reign of the Constellation really was. I'm 60 years old, and the Boeing 747 was just retired from passenger service last year. I remember reading about the debut flight of the 747 when I was in first grade. (By the way, this is the best quality VHS rip that I've ever seen. )
You got it all right. English would have been nice to hear this Clear Video. One would think with American Hollywoods Great pictures we would see 100's of this clarity in moving Pictures. But algorithms all way's on top of what it is.

Excelente pieza documental
Ironically, at the time this film was made, Lufthansa couldn't fly in or out of Berlin. That was because West Berlin was located within East Germany, which only allowed airlines of the 4 countries that had occupied their portion of the city at the end of World War II to use the airport.
what is the difference in respect to Hamburg from 1958 to 2021. In 1958 there were a direct flight to New York available.

ah the glory days of air travel, the rip quality is superb. The advances made are remarkable given 1958 is only 13 years from the end of WW2.
I remember very well the days they wrote tickets by hand before computers and printers. Every ticket had 3 carbon copies. The agent had to press hard. As you can see the Germans kept their aircraft in pristine condition.
I would love to see the world of the 50th for a few days, as time travelling tourist.
I would swap that in a heartbeat for today’s world.
Very different times, those tickets would have been hugely expensive compared to now. No GPS for the pilots either, long served old fashioned navigation.
I'm curious, what year did airliners first get GPS?

The golden age of air travel, sixty years later it's not so glamorous is it. Lufthansa only operated four Starliners and a couple of years later with the arrival of the Boeing 707 the Starliner was pushed on to less important Lufthansa routes.

Is it a country which was defeated in WWII? Just 13 years on...
