Closet Memories and Faded Dreams, 1956, SACRAMENTO CALIFORNIA, STATE FAIR & OTHER SCENES is a series of 8mm films that were shot by Lewis A., Evelyn, Dale and Barry Snider beginning in 1956 and ending about 1960. They were a fun loving family that enjoyed life in Sacramento living at 3318 X Street. These films were found not far away but many years later at the antique flea market that takes place under the freeway between W and X Streets in Sacramento.
Thank you for taking time to curate and put this video of yesteryear together for us to share as it is appreciated! I grew up on 37th st which is not far from the 33rd st Snyder home and know that area well. I also attended Sacramento HS and attended the old State Fair in 1966 as a 3 yr old. The early off road motorcycle shots of the boys near the river and below the bridge is indeed Marysville. The clock tower you mentioned in the background of their home is part of Sacramento High School and still standing. The later off road motocross scenes are from what was then called McGills motorcycle park and part of what is now called Prairie City OHVP adjacent to the Aerojet property as you mentioned. That’s all the new input I can share and I think you did a super job of identifying all the various places in the video. Thanx again 😅

I used to race around McGills (Prairie City) and Marysville on my dirt bike and boat at Folsom Lake and Sacramento and American Rivers as a teenager. Thank you again and keep them coming! 💯👀
Thanks for sharing. We lived on 16th & W/X before the freeway came through. (Those old alleys were in better shape than many of our roads are today.)

B&R in Sac in 58, I remember visiting the old state fairgrounds and walking through the old exhibit buildings, riding the kiddy rides, etc. and also roller skating as a very young child at the roller skating rink located in the same area as the fairgrounds, does anyone else remember that old skating rink with the very long aisle/hall? Also the Sacramento junior museum was just around the corner on Y street if Im remembering correctly. Growing up here during the 60s and 70s was the best!
That’s interesting, this is the first I’ve heard of either of those establishments. But then again I grew up on a farm about 60 miles north of Sacramento and had only made 2 short visits in the late 60s until being stationed at Mather in 1976. I never left.
Yes, they were there until about the early 70s maybe when a lot of that property was bought by the UC Davis med center to expand I guess. There was even a vocational type school located there in the 70s and maybe early 80s called the Skills and business center I think, needless to say that's no longer there as well. 76 is when I graduated hs, lol.
@heavywoods that’s funny, I mentioned making a couple of trips in the 60s to Sac but completely forgot about the Skills and Business Center. I took my GED there in 1975. I had quit school to join the Air Force, hence being stationed at Mather. I remember all of the construction going on at the time but didn’t think much of it as a 17 year old kid.
Was great to find this video. I was looking for any videos from cruising k st in Sacramento. I was born in sacto in 1951 lived on v st just a block or so from the old fair grounds. My favorite building was the county's building. It was always so cool and smelled so good. I volunteered at the Sacramento Jr museum. I remember when our dad wanted to take us to see a new house out in the country (Carmichael) lol. Thanks for the memories.
When I discover these I always imagine who might enjoy them. I am always in hopes it will be somebody like you. It’s so nice to have them appreciated for what they are. Are used to have a house on Rampart in Carmichael. Definitely not a country house. Lol I do however have film of Carmichael taken about 1940 I believe someday soon I’ll put that up. You could definitely say at that point Carmichael was in the country.
@@OfficeofImageArchaeology yeah we drove out folsom Ave I think some of it might have still been dirt. Through the hop fields to watt Ave and over the river. We moved, our new house was on mission Ave north of Marconi. My dad worked at the old box factory next to the sector river just south of hwy 80. I ended up going to Mira loma.
@@markjohnson3638 somewhere I I have a huge picture of that box factory pretty sure it’s the same one. The picture I have with hand colored in the late 30s or early 40s going by the model of automobile there. Well I don’t actually on the photograph anymore but I did scan it. It’s someplace in the terabytes of material I’ve scanned over the years. If you’re interested I’ll try and find it.This was the one out in Bryte or West Sacramento someplace In that area, right?

I used to be on a skateboard team sponsored by the a&w drive inn near the triangle on fair oaks Blvd. Used to hang out at the taco bell one of my buddies work there. Spent a lot of time at Carmichael and Hoffman parks.
i don't see anyone mentioning it, but that guy the kid on the motorcycle shakes hands with near the beginning looks an awful lot like famed auto customizer (I should say "kustomizer") George Barris who became the car builder to the stars but he and his brother Sam (the real car wiz between them, George was the salesman) started and were well established in Sacramento. So I think that kid was showing off his custom motorcycle and possibly the Barris bros had something to do with it.

@ 3:59 , looking south, it's Broadway, which runs East- West; going west you hit Stockton Blvd. From this view, you can see the parking lot. Many first learned to drive in the empty lot, before we took to the streets.
Thank you for the memories. I was born in Richmond, California in 1961. The 50's and 60's were similar. There are so many things in this video that I connect to. I really enjoyed watching this video!
19:52 That's Sacramento High School. That was the 1924 version of the school that was later torn down in the mid-1970s because of earthquake concerns. The current version of the high school opened for the 1976-77 school year.
i would of loved to grow up in the 50s-60s. unfortunately im a 1998 baby, i’ve always had a strong love for the 50s and 60s era though. feel as though i’m an old soul ❤ great video!
I am 66 now, born in 1957. I also identified and loved an era earlier than the one I was living in. For me it was and still is the 1940s. The era of the big band, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and The Andrew Sisters. Men and women all wore hats and families dressed up for almost every occasion. Because of this I could never find anything in common with girls my age or younger. I always found my self more comfortable with women older than myself. My wife was born in 1949, we have been married now for 36 years. I love her more today than I did when we were first married. FOR THE ONE I LOVE

That is very unfortunate that we are millennials. As a generation we are very lost, and are very mistrusting of each other
The Fair grounds were on the corner of Broadway and Stockton RD. My dad had a Mobil gas station about a mile from the state fair on Broadway. I remember going there in 1959 to 63.
Looked up the family and they have all passed away. Mom and Dad in the mid 90's, Barry 2017 and Dale in 2020.
I had not gone that far. I suspected that was the case though because generally you don’t find the stuff not for sale, unless all family members have passed away. There are cases where folks just don’t care, but I find that to be more common and more recent generations. Generally folks born before 1970 seem to be have a stronger bond with family and family memories. The new minimalist society we have raised, don’t seem to care.
@@OfficeofImageArchaeology It's great seeing the old movies and seeing Sacramento how it used to be. I get interested in finding out what the rest of the story was about. The two boys went by their middle names. Allan "Dale" Snider. Robert "Barry" Snider. Checked their Sac High yearbooks and what ever I could quickly find out on my 20 minute break.
Also you mentioned Prairie City regarding the motorcycle's. Before they moved the Hangtown races to Prarairie City the race was held in Plymouth. But it's great you providing the old films.

I graduated from Sac High in the late 80s too. Nice to see the old Sac High clock tower at 19:52. That's what it looked like when my mom went there in the 60s. The original clock tower was torn down when they totally remodelled the school. A new tower was build to replace it and it will stands today.

The tower at 19:59 is Sac High. The tower is still there. The River Tour boat is the same kind of tourist trip that still launches from Old Sac today.
Sac sure has changed since then....the old fair grounds on Stockton Bvd an Broadway epic..ty for posting this..I grew up in Sac an never got to see the Old FairGrounds that my mom an relative's talked about...My family an I went to Hiram Johnson Sr. H.S bout two miles from that spot..We hailed from Power Inn Rd an Fruitridge..My Gma went Old ElkGrove High school on horse back back in the 30's all my elders worked at AreoJet or went into the military...My Grandfather an Great uncle had some land off Calvine an Gerber Rd. They had several head of cattle back then..my family finally sold the last piece of partial in the early 90's to Buzz Oats..Sacramento had a different class of people back then that's for sure..My parents were born in late 40's an what y'all had in Sac an surrounding area's man an it was all clean too..What a Gem..
I moved to Sacramento from the little farming town of College City up I-5 in 1977. I took my High School G.E.D. exam at the old Fair Grounds in 76. I worked for Petigrew and Sons in the early 80s. My folks had a house in the early 90s off Lemon Hill and I worked for Buzz Oats in the 90s as a Maintenance Supervisor but got fired for being too honest. I discovered that my supervisor was stealing from the company but because ha had been there for several years and was well liked, he got a slap on the wrist, I was let go and given 6 months severance pay. Go figure. Out there on Gerber Rd used to be a very upscale mobile home park. I did some work for a fellow that lived there once , a guy name Don Mckenna. His brother Richard Mckenna was the author of a book and later movie called the “Sand Pebbles” starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough and several other big names. The movie was in incredible and made tons of money at the BoxOffice. It turns out the Richard McKenna sold the the film rights for a very small amount of money and died in 1964, 2 years before the movie was produced. As you say, much has changed in Sac over the years and not all for the better. Thank you for watching.
Its awesome u mentioned that you took your G.E.D at the Old Fairgrounds, I took a Culinary Course there in the early 90's during High school...I worked in the Cafeteria there...It was for the R.O.P program I got H.S. credits for wrking there an got a Certificate to cook in any commercial kitchen...After that iwent to LeaderWolfes right on Stockton an Broadway for a semester...My father an I use to go Quail an Pheasant hunting in College City...LemonHill dude that is like around the corner from where I grew up..that was a rough hood to buy a house in the 80's an 90's.That trailer park was it by FlorinPerkins/Gerber...

@@kenkelley9513 You’re right lemon Hill was a pretty rough area but my dad had it well in hand. You mentioned quail and pheasant hunting, you probably hunted near my house or where my house used to be rather. It was down near the canal on Tulie Road. Yes I believe the trailer park was around Florin Perkins.
Wasnt Tule Rd by the town Of Arnold an Arbuckle an that Canal had some big Perch an Catfish in it...Small world my friend...

That clock tower is Sacramento High School. Tower still stands today. Incredible video footage!

@@OfficeofImageArchaeology I'm familiar with the area. It's part of a very large building at the campus. 32nd and Y street, Sacramento.
Thank you I did find the clock tower finally. It is situated in the center of the campus attached to another building. Something was moved somewhere because in my film the young man can drive right up to it darn near or if he cross the street with his motorcycle but that’s not possible today because he have to drive through some other buildings to get there. I suspect they move the clock tower.

I'm from L.A. and have seen many old similar films of my city but, have lived in Sacramento for the past 30 years so it is really cool to see how much this city has changed as well. I lived here for 2 years before I even visited Old Sac and didn't realize until just a few days ago that it was totally restored between about 1967 and 1973 or so.
I’m not particularly fond of folks from L.A. Most if you keep, shall I say…. Rather unscrupulous company, and are usually up to no good.

That's Sac High. currently St. Hope charter school. Located at 34th and Y street. specifically the clock tower. constructed in 1924, and replaced in 1976 with a shorter less iconic clock tower.
I spent about two or three hours on the Internet looking for details just as you have given but could find nothing if you don’t mind I’ll put this information in my description and give credit to Bitchin Spectre. I have other films of the Sacramento area but have not posted them because I’m not sure of the exact location. Some from the Fair Oaks and Carmichael area. I also have photographs of downtown about 100 years ago that I put in a video one of these days. Those I do have identified. Thank you for the information and thank you for watching.

I’ve been there And have seen those photographs. My problem this time. I spend time finding your stuff, more time digitizing it and even more time editing and producing a video from the original film that is pleasing enough to the eye to keep the attention of an audience that has a trigger finger that would make any gunfighter proud poised above the next video button. Sadly it seems that the attention span of most people these days is about 3 minutes. I don’t necessarily do what I do for the views but I have to try and make some money someplace and the advertising on CZcams is about it. And I will thank you one more time.
@@OfficeofImageArchaeology What years are your footage of Carmichael & Fair Oaks? I lived for quite a number of years on Grant Ave in Carmichael, & went to the historic Carmichael School. I believe it marked it's 100 year anniversary in 2019. I'd love to see some footage of the original school, which was sadly torn down. It was a beautiful place. I've got a very good memory, & may be able to help with a few things. I love Sacramento & the surrounding areas. It's a wonderful place & what my sweetest dreams are made of. 💖

That boat is too small to be the Delta King, it docks at Front St, Sacramento. As a young man I worked as a prep cook for dinner and one night I decided I didn't like the way my boss was treating me so I quit but I couldn't exactly go home yet as the big paddle boat was only halfway through its cruise so I went up top where we took our smoking breaks and enjoyed the ride till it docked.
The steep hill was a widow maker hill climb for motorcycle.

@@OfficeofImageArchaeology @George Mihal well did some more research...I was wrong, or this could count a a "we where both right" apparently the "Spirit of Sacramento" and the "Mansion Belle" seen in this film. are one in the same boat.
it was rebuilt form the hull up at some point and re-christened in the 1990's. hence the differences in appearance observed. and they do look entirely different.
