    I find it interesting that Jimmy brought up how religious Africa is and yet complained about how successful America is in comparison and yet seemed to imply it was our Christian foundation that made America so well off. If that's true why isn't it helping you when America is full of Atheists?
    If God supported those who worshipped him why does he love us so much more?
    I want to show Jimmy the chart that shows the more religious a nation is the worse off it is and then point at the African countries at the bottom with the highest religion and lowest prosperity. And America off by itself with high religion and high prosperity as it we somehow succeeded despite being rabidly religious.
    So apparently praying for God to fix your country's problems is the least likely thing to help.
    You know what seems to help a country? Scientific and technological process. Supportive communities that don't weaponize religion against their neighbors. Secular education.

      Why did you want to see them be hard on Jimmy? I thought Janice did great showing how unthreatened she felt and trying to push past Jimmy's defensiveness. I somehow think that's the better road for that caller. There's not much to be gained in my eyes by 'dominating' ignorant callers.

    • @Disentropic1
      @Disentropic1 Před 12 dny +3

      @@Aliensjpg Personally, I think that understanding what's motivating the caller would require being patient and trying to get them to elaborate that for you. When he started ranting about how "god is what we have" in Nigeria, it sounded like we were starting to get down to why the caller was "talking like an idiot" in this case, and that's not something you could've brought out by analyzing and critiquing his prior comments with logic. We did find out, more than we possibly could've by any sort of one-sided atheist rant, what was actually behind the caller's thinking and attitude. If anything, I'd have liked to learn _more_ about how religious belief is motivated in places like Nigeria - what the main problems are and how religion fills the societal gaps. Frankly, just digging in on his 'logic' is not nearly such a useful or informative direction to take it. You don't often get callers with that sort of perspective, so why not learn something?

    33:58 Well said Janice - I've had that experience and that's very accurate. (Trigger warning)
    -
    In my case, I didn't so much witness a car crash, but the burnt out remains of a car that got rammed by an out of control vehicle. Fire dept. had only just put out the fire when my colleague and I arrived to close down the road for recovery, repairs and police investigation. While doing so, the cover the firefighters had put over the burnt out wreckage got caught in the wind a bit revealing the remains of the two people that were inside. We were focused on doing our jobs, worked about 9 hours near that accident site until about 1AM -- we got sent home because there was planned work at 6AM the next morning. For me, it wasn't easy to deal with that image and the feelings that came with it. I was quiet and out of sorts for a week. It's been over five years and I can still picture it in my mind, though not as clearly as before. My colleague it hit much harder by comparison; the next day, he broke down in tears mentioning it and couldn't function.
    The initial response at work by management was quite negative; just laughing it off and back to work with you. When actual medical professionals attached to the organisation got wind of it, they had talks with both of us and ended up sending my colleague home for a couple of weeks with counseling. I was fine after a week or two.
    About a month later, a car crashed in a very similar way near a local hospital (this one a onesided accident), no fire but also a fatality. Neither of us had been anywhere near it, but we both read about it. My colleague couldn't sleep at night, reliving the trauma from seeing the other wreck and it didn't impact me at all.
    -
    Sorry for that monologue. Talking about it has helped me immensely to give it a place.

    To caller John: I was raised as an Episcopalian. Over the many years, even as my views became ever more distant and vague, I always felt I was still within the broad framework of that denomination. It was learning more and more about the most hideous things in the bible - the bulk of the bible, which most priests and pastors avoid like the devil, that I realized an all-knowing all-powerful god would have never allowed that crap in his book.
    And by the same token, ANY such omni god would not allow the bible and other religious texts that DON'T speak for him to exist. Such a god would have created a simple easy-to-understand SHORT book, not open to all sorts of different interpretations. ONE book with his stamp of approval. The fact we see the EXACT opposite means either any such god is a complete and utter failure OR simply doesn't exist.

    • @rhondah1587
      @rhondah1587 Před 9 dny

      What happened to me was that I deconstructed long before the internet and had decided to find out where and when in human history the god Yahweh began to be believed as "the god" and as I researched the origins, what I found made it completely impossible to believe not only in Yahweh as real, but all gods humans have ever come up with. The history of how the Hebrews came to adopt one of the sons of El, the high Canaanite god, as their god is interesting and makes the whole of the OT, stories of which were adapted from earlier myths, absurd. Also, researching early Christianity made that spinoff of Judaism shows the evolution of thought of a desperate group of people under an oppressive Roman rule.

    1:27:23 - @John I don't know if you are reading this, but the first law of thermodynamics does state (kinda) that energy "cannot be created or destroyed" in the sense that the total energy of closed systems is always constant and doesn't fluctuate. What you are missing is "closed systems". That is very important because we do not know if our local universe is a closed system. Maybe energy escapes through the black holes or something crazy like that. Actually the universe is probably an "isolated" system (not a closed one), because it doesn't seem to exchange energy with anything around it, because the universe doesn't seem to have any "surroundings".
    Long story short, don't learn science from apologists. Details matter a lot when talking about this stuff

Jews are not a race... there are Jews of all colors and regions... there are black and brown and white and Asian and Persian and Arab and Indian and Ukrainian and Russian and German and and Jews with distinct cultures according to the geographic region they are from and different foods and dress and even religious nuances.
    Judaism is a religion just like Islam and Christianity... there is not such thing as a Jewish race EVEN ACCORDING TO THE Bible.
    Abraham and Isaac and Jacob were MYTHICAL just like Aladdin... but... also like Aladdin they were from Sumer...they were Sumerian according to the Bible.... but they lived in Egypt (all 72 of them mostly men with their mothers and sister) for 430 years... how do you think they became a race of anything that is not a mixture of Egyptian and Sumerian... at the very least.
