      @@disndat1000 That would be an awesome content to watch - which equipment they use, who is behind the mix and how they mix and master it. I believe it would be somehow similiar to mixing an orchestra, but the wide variety of instruments makes it 1000 times harder. I think they usually just record these live sessions (several of them) and then take the best one, but with no overdubs, so it must be prepared very carefully. Also the cinematography is top notch. Hands down to their techs/backstage!.

    Collier to me is quite probably the greatest all around musician of this generation. Don't shoot me just yet. Think about the effortless way he plays EVERY instrument (other vids) plus sings incredibly well, and his ear for harmonizing with those substitution and accidental chords he uses is other worldly. Then there's the intricate rhythms. His talent rises to the level of a Mozart in my opinion. He's only 18 years old and the fact that Quincy Jones is singing on his video should give you a flag as to the importance of this kid. He is the future I think.

      The music that Snarky Puppy creates is an acquired taste. Very few 13-20 year olds have that musical maturity to truly appreciate the art form. That's why the mass media will never recognize music like this. It's also why pop "music" exists.

    I haven't seen people having that much fun playing music in years. A true testament to quality of the music. Jacob is like Pat Metheny on steroids, while drunk and having a manic episode on acid with mushrooms and too much candy and soda after being given a promotion at his job and then holding his baby for the 1st time and just generally feeling very good and shit. Ok, so I've watched this video at least 20+ times in the past six years... and tonight I got to see Jacob Collier perform live at the Majestic Theater in Detroit... and he played this song in his set. It was like a cosmically joyous punch in my solar plexus... and I loved every second of it. Another big bucket list item checked off: I saw Jacob perform live, in front of me... and it was truly wonderful. But after I came home and began the long process of winding down from such an experience, I knew I had to revisit this video. Because this captures a truly miraculous point in time. Yes, I'll say it. This performance was a miracle, and we all get to revisit and witness it again whenever we want. I'm so grateful for that. Thank you, Jacob; thank you, Snarky Puppy; thank you CZcams. • @Ghost-wz6zl
    @Ghost-wz6zl Před 7 lety +130

    I've listened to it many times and the best realization is how great michael league does what he does. At the beginning of the whole vamping section right before jacob collier's solo, michael league keeps a constant steady pulse before the percussion section drummers and all join him in keeping time (and also in the intro with the drone of eighth notes coming from the synth or something...). Throughout all of the cymbal flourishes, synth effects, and all of the beautiful unorganized connection into collier's solo, he manages to keep the whole ensemble together with a little more than 4 or 5 notes in a steady rhythm. If you listen closely, you can hear him. It's not only until the percussion section joins him, he has more freedom to change up what he's playing and if you wanna be exact, he syncopates his parts more and makes them more groovy and complicated but not too complicated. Out of all of the craziness, technical, and mind-boggling parts, his role in this song is the best part out of all of the parts in the ensemble in my opinion. I've come to respect Michael League on a very different level than most other musicians.

      Exactly so! And here League adds in even more than his usual leader/player magnificence - being some of the nastiest bass unison parts, with the tuba. I think this is very innovative - another example is the session with Knower, he does unison with Cory's moog bass to awesome effect. This unison dimensionalizes the bass, in the sense of accessing funk space a la P-Funk/Bootsy - bass is a habitable place completely evidenced by two players locked in identically on diverse instruments. You hear it and it makes your face go funny, and I for one want in.

Everyone praises JC's extraterrestrial ears and chops, and very rightly so; but this is also just incredible songwriting, not only for a 21-year-old, but for anyone. The groove is in seven, and the lyrics are killer. It's funky, it's addictive, it's hip, and it makes you feel awesome to hear it. You're listening to the pop of the future; he may have other plans, but Jacob could rule the roost of the recording industry for the next 25 years and no one would complain. Speaking of which -- uh, JC, if you ever want any extra keys in the studio, I'm highly employable, I speak your mad language, and I can survive on coffee alone for extended periods of time. (:
