    In this video I react to No God, an instrumental by Band Maid, and focussing on the bass player Misa.
    A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
    I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

    A lot of people are of course impressed with her instantaneous switches between pick and slapping, but perhaps less appreciated is the amazing speed and precision of her octave slides - she does it almost non-stop on quite a few numbers. I wasn't completely surprised to see her holding an ice-pack on her left wrist in an after-show band interview a while back.

Anybody who says "THE BASS IS ONLY THERE TO ANCHOR THE SONG, NO MORE NO LESS," is clearly a lead guitarist with a huge ego who feels threatened by a skilled and capable bassist who can actually add more than just THUMP THUMP THUMP to the music, regardless of said bassist's sex. Band-Maid's music is generally dense with fast tempos that can be a bit confusing at first. Yet it's played and integrated so well, we can (sort of) follow along on the first couple of listens and just be amazed with what we're hearing. After our minds settle down, we can run it through a few more times and start to hear individual parts, which are very complex for a rock band, but fascinating and satisfying. With more listens we begin to more fully appreciate just what's going on here - just how good and cleaver these five, unique and prolific rock stars are.
    Band-Maid is one of those rare bands, like RUSH & YES, for example, that create music one can listen to over and over, rediscovering, and still feel like it's fresh and exciting as the first time. I still get chills hearing B-M's early songs. That, along with the bright, fun and quirky personalities of each Maid, should be a golden formula for stratospheric success. Please keep up your great Band-Maid reactions, reviews and analysis, Dean! This band runs deep!

      Well said. I'm so glad I got the ltd edition with the DVDs; even though the non-instrumentals aren't "complete" without the vocals, the instrumental versions (even the group edits) make things readily apparent that could be missed for a long time if just listening to the album versions. Having found them, one can then hear them in the full version.

    • @TomClark-Futoura
      @TomClark-Futoura Před 3 lety +8

      @@stevehall5128 Thanks, Steve. I think one reason they put out the instrumental only vids - no other band does that, do they? - is that so much is missed (like you said) when Saiki sings & performs. She commands such attention and focus that all the little riffs and nuanced playing is overshadowed. Especially with MISA. But once we witness what's going on behind this great frontwoman, what we hear is incredibly intregret and really sets them apart from other rock bands. Seeing them live is really the best way to see and hear this. They literally blew me away with just how great they play. Unfortunately, this is somewhat missed on most fan / MV's videos.

    This was the same feeling I had when I first listened to Puzzle. Straight up “All time- Taking to my grave” playlist material 😅
    It’s a damn shame that this gets completely buried with the vocals.
    H-G-K is my top pick off the album followed by this instrumental while the vocal ver. is around the 7th place.

    This video is from the DVD/BlueRay disc attached to the multidisc versions of the Unseen World album. There are 4 instrumentals (1 bespoke instrumental and 3 songs from the standard album just without vocals). They shot videos for all 4 instrumentals in this white room, and you can choose from 5 cameras: a camera focusing on any band member being still and just playing, or the full band view where they move around. I am no musician, but I assume this is absolute gold for someone who wants to understand or learn their music.

    Yeah they have instrumentals like this for every member for a few songs off Unseen World, and Conquerer as well. They all were from Blu-Ray/DVDs from limited releases. There is a camera angle that focuses on any single instrument the whole time so you can learn how to play it, or a group angle that changes between them and plays out more like a normal music video. I have them all, if you'd ever like to take a look at some of them. I wouldn't upload them though, and you have to be careful about using them, because they WILL file copyright strikes for this stuff as it's not something they want to share for free.

This video focuses on Misa, but the original video shows the other members too. No God is one of my favorites on the Album, and it's not anti-religious despite the title. @Wulfgold Because it's a good song, and I don't want people to avoid it because of a misunderstanding. I really didn't mean to offend anyone with my comment. The reason I alluded to Anti religion being negative is because of the people that avoided this song because of its title. My intention was to say "you shouldn't avoid this song if you think it's anti-religious, because it's not". Some people are religious, and others aren't. Regardless, I just wanted to clarify this songs title wasn't actually about "no god". My reasoning was because of the people that avoided this song by looking at its title and misunderstanding what it's about. I don't want them to miss out on this great song, that's all.

She plays fearlessly and is not afraid to make herself heard on BAND-MAID's songs, uses all 5 strings as needed, and has a pretty awesome tone while she's at it. MISA is a graduate of the Tokyo College of Music (approximate equivalent to Berklee Music College), it also bears mentioning, so she is far from just a pretty face (though I do own up to crushing on her). That thing she does where she switches between pick and thumb slapping is especially impressive, because you never hear a drop or lag in her playing when she does it because she's so deft about it. Some of the "Progress" disc songs on Unseen World really move deep into some of that "challenging" territory (Black Hole, Giovanni, H-G-K, Honkai, etc.).

    MISA is just another SONG WRITER in the band. And, who else there are? Obviously, they are Mincho and Ahchan, and even Kotabo and Saichan. Band Maid is an organically, physically, and spiritually SINGLE BOY/ENTITY that can’r be torn apart. “Music by Band-Maid,” the credit printed on the CD packages, tells what I mean.
