    Hmm.. memories! Had one as a child, sadly when I had kinda lost interest in playing it and it had begun to have minor faults, I tore it down as a teenager.
    I was interested on electronics and had the irresistible desire to tear down everything not-so-useful to see what they have inside, and to salvage components for own (mostly not that useful either) projects.
    As a happy side, I eventually became a professional technician.
    Speciality about this brick game was, that while handheld electronic games were traditionally expensive, till the end of their heydays, this was popular in end of that era and this was notorious for being cheapo, and sold and distributed with a plethora of different brand names, logos and packages prints on exact same product and package. It also came with different colors of plastic, some also transparent. There were also some slightly different variants of functionality.
    These were often given as "free gifts" with subscriptions of magazines and ordering of products, and they were also sold for pocket money on gas stations to keep children entertained during travel.
    I wonder if there is any information of the true manufacturer of these, and what kind if history does it have.

      The desire to disassemble and study in adolescence is something we have in common). Usually people with such aspirations end up getting a technical education.
      As far as I remember, Tetris itself as a game was invented somewhere in the 80s. And it was packaged into a portable console in the 90s. It was with us that it was “Brick Game” and is considered an authentic model.

      @@CustomFIX Nice to hear about your similar background, and your restoration was interesting to watch btw!
      Yes, Tetris has well-known origins, having been developed by Soviet engineer Alexey Pajitnov in 1984 for Electronika 60 computer. And has since gotten lots of clones for all kinds of computers and probably also as many kinds of standalone hardware like this.
      But I am especially wondering if anyone knows the backgrounds of this particular hardware product. While usually handheld electronic games used to be pricey and branded from famous manufacturers, this was a cheapo "white label" product that came "out of the blue" with a variety of names, never mentioning the actual manufacturer name - at least in any noticeable way.
      I wonder what might have been the manufacturer, some Chinese or Taiwanese for sure, and what has been their story behind this thing.. There would be a place for a documentary.
      My one was actually named "Game Fun" instead of "Brick Game", forgot to mention. But looks otherwise exactly same, to the extent of packaging albeit it having colorful print with "Game Fun" logos. Color scheme of the device was same too, white case and yellow buttons.

      All I could dig up on this matter:
      After long trials, Nintendo received the rights to Tetris and released its gameboy complete with a Tetris cartridge. It turns out that the Gameboy was the official portable Tetris console.
      According to known data, 32 million devices and 15 million cartridges were sold.
      I think with such success, pirated products began to be produced and sent simultaneously to all parts of the world under different names.
      I don't think it's possible to find a beginning for this. The beginning is most likely, all the factories and basements of electronics in China at the same time)
      A separate, full-fledged history of Teris piracy could be recreated by taking interviews from various witnesses of what was happening in China at that time.
      But that is another story )

      Thanks ). The blinking pixel is a feature of this part of the game if you select a different number or another game, then the pixel there does not blink. Glad you liked the video! )

    What percentage of peroxide do you use to whiten the parts?

    Where'd you get fresh battery contacts that are compatible? Unless you harvested them out of a newly manufactured Brick Game... a little sus.

      I took the contacts from my daughter's old toy. It was necessary to show this so as not to mislead the audience. Thanks for watching. )

      @@CustomFIX Add this one to skill bucket: you can easily and relatively safely electroplate the contacts with nickel at home. I have found that i loathe the usual nickel acetate method and i use nickel citrate instead. Also don't make the same mistake as i did, so take it slow when priming the solution and use as little salt as at all possible. I heard that you can use saccharine as a chemical brightener and i tried and i can tell for certain i haven't ruined the solution but i also can't see that it was helpful at all.
      You should get a lot better outcome from a professionally formulated solution like the one from Tifoo but i haven't tried.
      Also don't make the mistake of buying cheap battery nickel strip and hoping that it's actually nickel. I thought "it's probably not the best thing but i can try" and no, no, it galled the solution so fiercely. You do need a high purity nickel electrode.
      You can also run the electroplating process basically in reverse in any salt electrolyte to electrically clean and ablate the surface and prepare it to accept the plating.
      Originally the battery terminal is of course chrome plated but i am not about to suggest you do that at home.
      I basically do electronics repairs on a weekly basis. The most out there thing i have done is rebuilding a CCFL monitor to LED backlight, including partial PSU redesign, and just the whole process of manipulating the LCD layers without breaking them is quite something.

    • @CustomFIX
      @CustomFIX  Před 10 dny +1

      I have already ordered an electrode for nickel plating, although I am not sure of its quality, I will have to experiment. I purchased the solution from a local electroplating company. 3 solutions of “Galvanic degreaser”, “Activator”, “Solution for nickel plating” and separately distilled water for rinsing. I’m also thinking of experimenting with copper plating, silver plating, etc., as time permits. Very interesting note about the reverse process to remove the coating and further processing, thank you.
      Like you, I changed CCFL to LED backlight). Now there are several Dell u2412m, you need to change your native LED to a Chinese one.

    Отлично отреставрировано, а зачем вы фольгой изнутри обклеили корпус?Вроде бы нет в этом особой необходимости.

    • @CustomFIX
      @CustomFIX  Před 25 dny +1

      I agree this is not necessary. This is my attempt to slightly shield the body from interference. Of course, these are not high-precision medical devices or aerospace equipment )
