3:44 Why I modified the keto diet
    4:45 Why stress depletes potassium
In this video, I want to talk to you about the signs, symptoms, causes, and treatment of low potassium.
Low potassium is one of the number one deficiencies. However, it most often goes undetected. When you take a blood test, it simply doesn’t show up. Why? Because the majority of potassium resides inside the cell. You have to be very deficient in potassium for it to show up on a blood test.
The best way to find out if you have a potassium deficiency is to look at the symptoms.
Here are some of the common symptoms of a potassium deficiency:
    • High blood pressure
    • Muscle cramps
    • Sugar cravings
    • Constipation
    • High insulin
    • Muscle weakness
    • Abnormal heartbeat
    • Insomnia
    • Anxiety
The need for insulin actually decreases when you have enough potassium.
What causes low potassium? There are numerous reasons you might have low potassium levels. Here are some of the most common ones:
    • Vomiting
    • Poor diet
    • Ketosis
    • Diuretic
    • Diabetes
    • High cortisol
    • Excess H2O
    • Sugar
How can you increase your potassium level? Many people believe that bananas are the best source of potassium. However, bananas contain only 300mg of potassium. You need 4,700mg of potassium. You would have to consume 15 bananas, which would add a lot of sugar to your diet.
Instead, you want to consume plenty of fresh vegetables. I recommend 7-10 cups each day. Avocados, spinach, salad, and cucumbers are great sources of potassium.
My healthy version of the keto diet includes plenty of vegetables to help replenish electrolytes.

I cannot thank you enough, Dr. Berg, for explaining low potassium thoroughly. I’ve had symptoms for four months now and have been to 10 different doctors who automatically assume it’s all anxiety. I told all the doctors I have anxiety because no doctors have been able to find or care to think that all my symptoms could be something else. I have all those symptoms you listed. I’ve looked over my basic lab work and saw that I have low K+ and high glucose. Why didn’t the doctors catch that is beyond me. I wish all doctors are in their field because they actually care about people. It’s hard to find a good doctor.

You are pissing off a lot of heart doctors. After I finally had an ablation for Afib and still had Afib, I said enough was enough. I was going to figure it out myself. I was told my condition would only get worse as I age. Well I started looking into diet and found both magnesium and potassium is essential for normal heart rhythm. Magnesium was the easier to supplement, so I tried it with little to no relief. So I turned to potassium, an ex football player friend advised trying coconut water, and wow! When I was in Afib and I drank two, it would go away within an hour. If I concentrate on adding veggies in my diet, it keeps the symptoms away altogether. Personally I think I exhausted my potassium in my system years ago while doing Atkins diets to loose weight. Why are you pissing off heart doctors? My heart doctors advice for Afib was not to eat or drink anything and come in for a cardio-conversion, they basically shock you into normal rhythm. After three conversions and an ablation, thousands of dollars to my doc and hospital, and all I needed was to eat better. I hope others read this.

Grady thank you for this!!! I ended up in ER HR was 150 they said suspected I had AFIB after the X-rayed my heart which was healthy and fine, blood pressure was text book perfect. I asked them about my electrolytes said they were normal but I complained that I had a muscle pull under my Brest bone ER doc said ooh that’s just muscle spasm. The fitted me with heart monitor for 2 weeks and referred me to electrophysiologist. Thank God he is one if the top in the country who had AFIB himself and corrected it with lifestyle change. However his protocol low carb and IF with long walks made my symptoms worse because it was the middle of our hottest summer and now I realize I was losing all electrolytes. I was concentrating more on magnesium mor than potassium. I’m so glad I found a fellow so called AFIB friend. Even when I ask the doc what causes AFIB he said they don’t know yet, seriously how do you not make the connection to mineral deficiency?

Personal experiences are the best sources of correct advice. And I agree with you. Half of our problems are exaggerated and diagnosed to convince us to take medicines. But like you said if we check our eating habits, our troubles are self corrective. I used to have severe cramps despite long walks . But now hardly get them. And main change I made in my life style is not to stress out too quickly. Do not get too happy or too sad. Rather than people and circumstances determine your happiness and unhappiness, you do it yourself. In short " Be in control of your emotions. " . And experience the benefits yourself.

I'm so grateful for your videos Dr Berg. I tell everyone about you! You helped me get well....
No Dr I paid could find anything wrong with me! They decided I needed PILLS and a Psychiatrist!!!
I never took their pills.. I'd come back in and they yelled at me! I think they noted in my chart as a trouble maker... Then none of them were nice or comassionate anymore!!
So I went home crying... I started praying to God to help me help myself! I found you through the Keto diet videos! I started at the beginning... WITH MY GUT! Then after I had those symptoms under control... I started my Keto diet after studying your videos like crazy!! Then I bought all my veggies like you said... And one week i was sickly- detoxing... I'm sure... But magnesium and potassium was low from symptoms. That went away finally! Then I became light as a feather! I lost 17 lbs in 7 weeks.
After this... I discovered what had been wrong with me at age 48- that the Drs couldn't- wouldn't find!!!
Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency!!!! It raised havoc on my body. I had loose bowls for 5 or 6 yrs. My left eye started bulging.. High blood pressure.. Couldn't sleep or do anything. My body was in total pain! If I did anything I was pulling muscles and tendons! Once I sneezed and pulled my muscle between my shoulder blades! ( still having problems with it) My knee took 1 year and 3 months to get well.. Both my forearms were too sore all the time to carry anything. It hurt to sleep.. Turn over. Then I started have both arms get horrific pains in them.. It would crawl down my arms and go numb!!!! I had to stop. Even if I was driving! It was VERY scary. I felt like I was waiting to die!!!! I kept losing my balance too.
Sorry this is so long.. But these are symptoms! I had them... Didn't know what it all meant...
Just one more thing! In 7 weeks.. My eye sight was corrected from astigmatism. Also I had tore retinas on both eyes. Those closed up!
    So Thank You Dr Berg!!!!!

  • @HappilyAnonymousGirl
    @HappilyAnonymousGirl Před 2 lety +46

A friend of mine told me I might be low on potassium the other day.
Now, I’m seeing this video and thinking yep. That sounds about right.
It’s scary that friends and CZcamsrs are more reliable than a lot of doctors nowadays… It’s really sad actually
    Update:
I started taking potassium a few days ago and I have noticed a huge difference in my neck muscles. They were very stiff and almost felt solid in some areas on the right side and there was an immense amount of tension on that side as well.
Last night I took 4 of the 99 mg tablets of potassium (since the daily allowance is 4700 mg) and waking up today I feel like my neck is more relaxed than it has been for over a year.
Also the knots in my back don’t seem to be bothering me today. Which is usually pretty constant.
I guess I really need to improve my diet to include more foods high in potassium. That should be easy enough, since potassium seems to be in like everything lol.
It’s even in coffee! No wonder I wanna drink so much of it 😂👀 jk I just love coffee lol
UPDATE: I just wanted to say that you should not take potassium SUPPLEMENTS at the amount I was taking!! It helped at first but then it made me feel worse because you’re not supposed to take that much of the potassium supplements. I didn’t know that, but you should get it from natural sources if you really need that much.
TLDR: Potassium is super important, but if you need a lot of potassium, get the majority of it from food and not just pills. Only take what is recommended on the bottle if taking supplements. Please be careful! Thank you!
    ALSO!!!
My problem was not coming from low potassium, although I may have that issue as well. I had swelling in my face and neck from PERIODONTAL DISEASE! Gum disease.
I went to the dentist and got a deep cleaning for about $800 and the swelling went away and my TMJ improved significantly!!! No more swelling and numbness in my face! Please take care of your teeth and gums!! There’s a reason they tell us to brush twice a day and floss everyday.
Gum disease can kill you if left untreated!!

I recently had a mild anxiety attack, and my blood pressure was consistently staying very high. 154/93, 150/91, 153/94 for 3 days in a row. I read that Potassium helps with blood pressure, so I bought bananas, spinach, and almonds 4 days ago. I've been eating all of them a lot. First thing I noticed is that I already feel a lot better. It takes a while to recover from my anxiety and little things like loud noises when I'm sleeping can cause my heart to race like crazy. After eating bananas spinach and almonds every day, it feels like my heart recovers so much faster. I'll hear something that scares me, but two seconds later my heart will go back to normal where a few days ago it would have taken a minute or two. Just took my blood pressure and it already went down more than 10 points. 139/90. So yeah, it's actually working and working very well. Going to continue to try to find more foods with potassium.

We recovered quickly without any problems, and now my BP is high even with the medications that I've been taking for years. I have heart palpitations and headaches, so my doctor believes my potassium is low. I was working out, losing weight, and doing keto with IF before covid. After covid my body is going through changes that were not issues prior to covid. I've added potassium and magnesium based on one Dr. Berg vidoes because I have alot of potassium deficiency symptoms. Although my doctor is good, her solution to my problem for now is take an extra pill until she gets my lab results and that isn't acceptable. Prayerfully my body gets back to its normal state soon.

Diagnosed cause of my very, very low K+: Hyperaldosteronism. Taking potassium-sparing diuretic twice a day and making sure I am well hydrated and eat 4 servings of K+ every day, avoiding high salt intake. I check my BP daily, at differing times of day. Suffered for 10 years with palpitations, painful muscle spasms, weakness, sleep disturbances, imbalance etc, all exacerbated by sweating (lose electrolytes). Became very overweight because when weakness, cramps, lightheadedness began, I would overeat, often using sugary soda as a beverage of choice, trying to "wake up". Always showed K+ on bloodwork at lower limit of normal. My K+ was so low, an anesthesiologist refused to allow elective surgery until the issue was investigated. My endocrinologist refused to accept my diagnosis, saying, "Mary, when you hear hoofbeats , think horses, not zebras". Lesson to all: Be pro-active. A rare illness can be the exception that proves the rule. It was my nurse practitioner (from another physician's practice) who probably saved my life. She sent me to her professor of endocrinology who ordered a full work-up.

Dont look to much in to that. It is normal to feel and hear a more pronounced heart beat while lying on your left side. Especially at night because you are relaxed and are quieting the mind. You will hear your heart beat a lot more vs. while you are up and about etc. But regardless, taking potassium is great advice. I am working on absorption currently because if you cannot absorb the correct amount of minerals, vitamins and nutrients etc than you need to go a step further back in to the equation of balance.

Before I went into A-fib and nearly had a stroke on March 14, 2019 (this year), I was craving chocolate and sweets. That isn't like myself. I've never been a real fan of sweets. Now that I've increased by potassium, only modestly, and am following a more strict routine (turning off the electronics around 8 o'clock, last meal of the day around 6 o'clock, and protein in the morning) I am having better sleep AND getting up in the morning instead of needing to sleep most of the day. I can't exactly say I spring out of bed in the morning, but I'm up. Last year at this time my body was in so much pain (from toxins and deficiencies) that I was almost nearly bedridden. This is the absolute truth. Thank you for helping us learn so much about our bodies' needs. My blood pressure began going up when the doctor started giving me psych drugs. I'd suppose the drugs were causing deficiencies. sigh.....
