Subsequently and exhaustively imitated, the language of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is immediately recognisable, speaking with the ‘still small voice of calm’ amid chaos and confusion. Born in 1935, Pärt reached compositional maturity in the late 60s with a series of works which painfully juxtaposed modernist dissonances with diatonic islands of peace, often Christian in message and raining down criticism from Soviet authorities.
At this point the evolution of his style produced an unassuming piano piece, Für Alina, which holds the key to the next 25 years of his music. For it he developed a ‘tintinnabuli’ technique where melodies move step by step around a central pitch, producing a soundworld timeless yet original and distinctively new.
From the technique grew instant classics of a genre at one remove from the slick certainties of US minimalism: Fratres and its many arrangements (eight of them represented here), the Cantus in memory of Britten, Tabula rasa for a Baroque sized concerto grosso ensemble and more. Then, having emigrated to Germany, Pärt applied the technique to the Christian texts which were always his rock and inspiration: first the St John Passion in 1982, followed by a sheaf of vocal works such as the Magnificat, Stabat Mater and Maria Antiphons which have become standard repertoire for choirs around the world.
In the last 20 years the harmonies in his music have filled out and become accommodated to a Romantic richness of expression even in sacred works such as I am the true vine and The Woman with the Alabaster Box, but there remains an individual simplicity to Pärt’s idiom that resists easy classification while continuing to affirm beauty and touch the souls of listeners.
All the works mentioned here are included in the box, in widely praised modern recordings made during the last 20 years, and the set is accompanied by full booklet notes.

Such pieces remind me why humanity exists. This is why.
The first time I heard Miserere I was driving late at night on an empty road. I had to stop, in the rain, and listen to the entire piece...possessed by its beauty. An experience I'll never forget.
where would we be without music ?
Driving down an empty road in soul darkening silence
The first time I heard Pårt, I felt almost immediately and with stunned amazement that I was hearing 'The Real Thing' for the first time in contemporary music: Musical genius of the first rank - 'Truth' in music that only the deep humility of artistic discovery can achieve
@@Don.Challenger Ah, the good ol' days!
I had the same experience with Spiegel im Spiegel. Late night drive, empty road. It just floored me and I almost had to pull over, I was so struck by the beautiful, emotionally-resonant simplicity.
I'm monk in Holy Mountain of Athos, I listen and I'm praying very well, almost all of the nights I listen for little contemplation before the start of my prayers.
Thank the Holy God that there are so many of you on Mount Athos fully dedicated to the Real Life.
God Bless You! Lord Have Mercy!
If someone didn't know:
The Republic of Mount Athos is an autonomous clerical Orthodox monastic republic located in the northern part of Greece, on the eastern promontory of the Halkidiki peninsula, on the Ágios Oros peninsula, and its capital is Karies.
Ora pro Nobis.....from Mexico City!
In the Philokalia it speaks of three kinds of prayer. The highest prayer is to sit in deep silence, open to the experience of God. The book, Cloud of Unknowing, and The Book of Privy Counseling are true guides in that direction. May your prayer life deepen until the Experience of God is with you in all hours.
I can't possibly express how much I love this. I had never heard of this composer until I saw him mentioned in a new novel by one of my favorite contemporary authors--- EVERY OCEAN HAS A SHORE by Jamie Langston Turner--- who created a quirky character who is a minimalist and says she enjoys music by Arvo Pärt. She is sometimes overheard humming unusual music with only a few long-held-out notes that seem to repeat and go up and down... at least, that was the impression it made on her unimaginative boss when he heard it. I was intrigued by the idea of "minimalist music" and wondered if this Arvo Pärt could be a real composer, decided to look him up on CZcams, and clicked PLAY expecting to hear something weird and tuneless. You can imagine the shock of delight when instead I was greeted by the ethereal beauty of Spiegel im Spiegel. I am captivated. This will now play as the perfect soundtrack for the rest of my reading of this wonderful book. BTW I highly recommend any and all of Jamie Langston Turner's novels.
Ha! Same here, never heard of this composer until I saw him mentioned in a novel by one of my fave writers, Lee Winter - 'Requiem for Immortals'. (Cello player/Assassin!!)
Thanks
Same here, this time from the novel Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt
Its magic, but i expected to visit a so called martinee concert in salzburg austria and the four seasons should be the highlight of this concert. As i arrived in the so called mirrowroom of salzburg they announced that the composer was sick for four seasons and instead should be tabula rasa from arvo pärt which i dont knew. So far this concert of arvo pärts tabula rasa was not from this planet as all people went out after this concert with tears and i felt 3 days like in heaven so i will never forget and say thank you for this present yours robert from austria
The music of the spheres. Nostalgy of infinity. Tenderness, sweetness. Kindness. My wish for each created creature, under the gambrels of the sky
I’m not religious I can’t believe in a supernatural entity but like you when I listen to avro part I can believe in humanities heaven
So beautifully said, thank you for that!
Arvo Part et Philip Glass, deux raisons de ne pas désespérer de notre époque.
"The sound was up and down, sometimes disappeared and other times came with the wind of the air. I stood in front of the shelter, the day started faking, a few tiny human’s figures moving against the dimmed sky over the riverbend. Occasionally a weak sound of knocking came a few seconds after their body movement, as they were knocking wood piles of bridge into the river. Everything looks like a cartoon and not real - except that piece of music that is continuously playing inside some part of my body, strong and clear sometimes, weak and fakeaway other times. At that moment, everything around me was frozen, stopped; I was full of tears; I suddenly felt as if I was alive.
I didn’t remember how long I stood there, until a group of young inmates and villagers waved arms to me as they walked back from their work. I did not tell anyone my experience and I couldn’t find what, and how a piece of music struck me in that remote isolated village. ..... " quote from " a story of a musician" by Jerry Nie, rmt
I wish our earth is full of peace❤️
You know when my heart is entirely broken because I stop talking, though only certain things help and allow me to SIT with that heartbreak...this composer is one of those things..............
Das ist brillante Musik. Sie läst uns aufsteigen in die universale Unendliichkeit. Danke Arvo und sei behütet vauf Deinen Wegen!

I'm 18 years old and love this piece, it really does place my mind in a place of reflection and imagining. Anyone else around my age who listens to this?

@@yiyanghe7895 so nice. True, beauty can be life saving. Move, keep going, looking forward for all men made beauties.....may be you already know Dostoievsky?
Good for you at 18. Please introduce more of your friends to this music, for their benefit and for the good of the world at large.
I was like you when I was your age and younger, but I’m 40 now. In fact, becoming an adult meant not being able to be this deep again. I was human only for a short time…
I am 81 and am just listening for the first time.
NPR played a clip of his music several years ago such that I immediately bought a CD of his music. So wonderful to rediscover him. A great start for the New Year 2024!
Spiegel im Spiegel - diese Musik lässt meine Seele heilen
Ja. Yes. It heals.
Arvo Pärt has composed some of the most beautiful, soulful music ever written. My goto composer every time I need music for introspection especially in the darkest, most difficult moments in life.
Thank you for highlighting his works.
I feel the exact same way about him.
So true- I'm now recovering from covid- this is like an oasis-
Bugsy, my jack russell died today, this music is my memory of him.
You get this feeling with some of Part's compositions which you also get with some of those by John Taverner. That they have been around for ever and they are inextinguishable. It is a classic case of someone making exceptionally beautiful and spiritually profound music having done a lot of study and research and learning about past composers. Having learnt so much about medieval choral and devotional music he was able to move the tradition forward in a way that is devastatingly good and right.
Can feel the chanting with my spiritual senses.
Am a Benedictine nun. This music is mystical.
Yes absolutely.🤲🏾🤲🏾🤲🏾
Love the Order of St. Benedict. And you are correct...it is completely aligned with that Way of Life. God Bless
Just want to crawl inside and stay forever
Arvo Part so movingly embraces the dimensions of love.
With the deepest appreciation and devotion for these extraordinary pieces. ❤️
Arvo Pärt follows the line of development initiated during the Middle Ages and without abandoning it grows into contemporary music. This capacity of synthesis preserving beauty perhaps belongs to our confused times. Pärt transcends time, is at the same time baroque, minimalist, medieval, contemporary, classic. I believe he will be, in the future, a Master. Thanks again Brilliant Classics for producing and uploading this marvelous music.
Genius reply my friend, you are indeed spot on.
@@VindexInSanctiRex Many thanks Varg.

Inmortal.

Gracias.
Without words. Just a feeling of certainty of beauty at its purest. Timeless... Thank you
Amazing what a bit of organized noise can do to our mind.
Замечательный композитор! Невероятная музыка...
Dear Brilliant Classics channel creator:
My soul is touched.
Deeply.
Thank you for all of this work you have put together.
The magic of silence ❤
Bogoróditse Djévo really got to me. I was listening to this while writing on my thesis and had to stop to look up what particular piece this was on. It felt like it changed my heartbeat and made it difficult to take a breath.
I was introduced Arvo by my Estonian teacher. I cannot thank here enough. She also took us to his museum. Sadly, he didn't visit it that day. :( I took a look to the process of his masterpieces creation. This is the sort of art that your soul is looking for. Something that goes beyond technique and surpasses itself through a transcendental power.
Thanks for sharing!
I broke in tears 😭😭😭
Years ago Spiegel im Spiegel has drawn me in. Beautiful and almost out of this world. Very moving music.
The odd tones in Fratres is my favorite. You can't decide whether it makes you happy or sad. It bounces so much but in such a surprisingly smooth and comforting way. It takes amazing talent to make music sound focused and entropic at the same time.
Listening this music for the first time...i've never heard about him...
Крутая работа, браво!
Then somehow I can STOP & BREATHE & MERELY BE .....as that ENTIRE UNIVERSE OF EMOTION finds a way to communicate and express itself and a home within the fabric of all & everything to then breathe deeply and , Carry On , which I couldn't do - IF I couldn't find a way to let it all out...SOMEHOW.
Восхитительная, божественная и чарующая слух и сознание музыка, уносящая на волнах спокойствия, радости , счастья и безмятежности в прекрасный мир Грёз!
The music is so melancholy and hypnotic it makes me think of the hands on the clock of life. Ticking away the last seconds until the next journey of the soul.. Beautiful and hypnotic.
Poetic. Beautiful. Apt.
Просто не слов описать. Прекрасно. Благодарю.
I just watched an interview with Paavo Järvi who mentioned a few Estonian composers, including this man. I don't have a recollection of his music and found this. By the third measure of the first piece the tears began flowing. This is amazing music... Spiegel im Spiegel. Talk about opening the heart!
Beauty as simplicity
Arvo Pärt is a Creator of artistic breaks!😀😇🙏

Thank u so much 4 this collection. Its a hope in this furious and restless times.
I've been watching a tv show recently that is very ugly and has been distressing & depressing me. I decided to stop watching due to the negative effect it was having on my mental well-being.
Two minutes into Spiegel im Spiegel, I burst into tears. It feels like a cleansing; I can _feel_ the healing and re-centering taking place in my heart. This is music to make you whole.
Part is a very underrated composer. I love him and Philip Glass. My favorite living composers.
But not so. He has Grammy. Is well known.
Argo Part is an artist, composer, Glass is music manipulator and fraud.
This is just so lovely.
Absolute first class, serenity in perfectin, a diamond of music
I was working in the kitchen as a cook,in Tallinn once, and had a chance to make him pancakes 🥞 😃

Absolutely beautiful.
