    The scene of Maxine stomping on the guys testicles was a crowd-pleaser, but it hurt the story structure, because it made Maxine look scarier than anybody in the movie, including the masked killer.

    • @jonsrecordcollection7172
      @jonsrecordcollection7172 Před 17 dny +8

      I think one way they could have resolved the problem, in a way that would make Maxine tough but also vulnerable, would have been to lean into more of the implications that Maxine is suffering from PTSD. Ti West had a great visual language for depicting the PTSD, by putting flashbacks on grainy 1970s-style film stock, but he could have easily done more.

    I really disliked the killer "reveal", it was so predictable which is fine and you can make it interesting but once you involve the cult it was just ridiculous. What really made me upset was the fact that Maxine doesn't save Molly and that, to me, minimizes her story in the film of her kinda having survivors guilt and being selfish, not wanting to help others, it would've brought her story full circle. There isn't much character development for her and she gets what she wants, which is great, that's what we wanted for her but it doesn't feel meaningful or deserved. It feels like they didn't really know what to do with the story, doesn't mean it doesn't have it's moments but pretty weak compared to the last two

    Mannnn. After that beautiful shot in the dark hallway with the red neon sign as the killer is walking towards it, then seeing him clad in all black with the focus on his gloves while watching the peep show I was just thinking "oh fuck yeah, we're getting a Giallo!" Then when that didn't materialize, we got the Bacon stuff which was fun and bordering on campy which I rolled with. But the killer reveal and the outdoor scene kind of killed the vibe for me. I still liked it, a solid 7/10. As others have mentioned I think Ti needed to just choose a consistent tone which I feel like Ti accomplished in both X and Pearl. I do feel like he nailed the seedy atmosphere of LA in '85 which I feel a lot of films with much higher budgets fall to fully immerse you in. That and Goth's performance were probably the highlights.

  • @denisematthews6215
    @denisematthews6215 Před 16 dny +5

    I’m right with you on this one, Lee. Ty West was kind of throwing everything in there including the kitchen sink! Ramirez, Satanic panic, a film director trying to make her mark in the industry, an actress willing to do anything to become a star, a clownish PI, and a pissed off, mentally unstable dad! I also agree with the fact that it should have been darker, like Seven. I also expected a more badass Maxine! She had two awesome moments; but we needed more! The third act reveal took me right out of it for a few moments; but I guess it did make sense that he came looking for her. I truly thought , though, that the dad and PI in particular were cartoonish. Holy cow, did Kevin Bacon ever chew the scenery!

    It was ok to me. It looked good, on par with the previous films. I was just expecting a bit more of a sinister portrayal of the killer. The intro definitely set it up that way. Pearl is still at the top spot for me

    Pearl is still the best one hands down.
    I’m sure I’ll like this one more after I rewatch it but man, it didn’t live up to the hype and I’m sure a lot of the hype was based on fan speculation and expectations but still, MaXXXine is the weakest of the 3.
    I was waiting for a reveal that her Father was Pearls kid in connection to either Pearl/Howard or Pearl/The Projectionist, that the killer would be another Mia Goth character of sorts or that the film would end with Maxine saying she wants to make a movie telling her story from X and so X would be both the first film and an almost meta retelling of Maxine playing herself and Pearl and can be viewed in both ways.

    Maxxxine was my most highly anticipated movie of 2024 as well. I watched it yesterday and throughly enjoyed it but I had some of the same issues as you with this movie. I have watched 21 new movie releases this year and this is in my top five favorite movies of 2024 thus far along with Dune 2, Bad Boys 4 Ride or Die, Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 and A Quiet Place Day One. It’s my favorite of the trilogy but I think Pearl is the best of the trilogy mainly because of Mia Goth’s stellar performance in that movie. This was another good movie review Lee. ❤❤❤❤

    When I first saw X I had a feeling tha the father was going to be prominent if they ever made a sequel. When the trailers for Maxxxine dropped I told my girlfriend I bet you a buck its going to bethe dad. I sawthe film yesterday and In the first 2 minutes I felt secure in my thoughts that yes it was going to be the dad.
    Aside from that I enjoyed the film immensely. The film was funny and dark. Kevin Bacon was very good. So overall Im glad there was a conclusion to the series. The last few minutes could gave been stronger.

    0:36 I’m only at the beginning of the video and I just got done seeing it in theaters… it wasn’t a terrible movie. It was good. However, the ending was a little bit expected and because of how they set up the movie X and the movie Pearl, it made me feel very hyped up to see this movie and I feel like it didn’t fulfill what it was intended to do.. unless there is a fourth movie or even if there isn’t, the story is good at its conclusion however, I felt that everything was rushed at the end
    6:31 I am so happy that you have the opinion I didn’t hate the movie, not at all, but it felt like I was let down based on the first two movies that had previously come out before it. if there’s a fourth movie, I’ll be happy and I will be willing to see it how to put it“millennial “terms or younger terms it didn’t have the same “ vibe” as the other movies did

      X is just a by the numbers, slasher.
      They put the Prom Bight actress nude, being a prom star, as one angle, and he lucked out getting Jenna Ortega, who felt like the lead, for most of the movie.
      She was in a small part, with an old trope, using the movie they’re shooting, as a lure.
      Meanwhile the backstory is being setup, with Mia Goth, in obvious, old lady prosthetics, costume and makeup.
      It has the preacher in the background, over and over, and anyone who watches lots of movies, can see it’s pointing at her, being his daughter.
      She killed her grandmother, maybe, type of thing.
      Pearl is just bad, imo, and I’ve only watched 20 minutes of Maxxxine, so I don’t know what to say.
      I’m just it as fascinated by Mia Goth, as so many others seem to be. She was horrendous in Infinity Pool. Or delve was genius, if her character was intended to make my ears bleed, from saying “James,” over and over, throughout the movie, until I stopped it, and came back to it, here times.
      I seriously thought, I can’t get through this movie, because of her accent, saying “James,” even one more time. 😵‍💫

    Does anyone know the post credits scene? My friend wasn’t feeling well and we had to leave right at the credits but everyone was still sitting down so I’m guessing there was something at the end? Maxine Minx has made it to my top three favourite movie characters but I agree something about Maxxxine felt a little empty. But in a way that’s exactly how 80s movies were! I don’t even think I remember any of the side characters names and didn’t really care when they died. When Bobbi-Lynn, Jackson and crew died I was sad, this time I was like ‘oh Halsey died 🥱’ Bobby Cannavale did a fantastic job in this one too! I felt like there was a big disconnect between the more realistic characters like him and then Kevin Bacon and the dad hamming it up like crazy. I didn’t know if it wanted to be campy or noir. Also Lily Cole’s accent got the UK crowd tittering a bit 😂 absolutely awful especially as her father is English!

Plus Maxine taking nobody out in the end? Not even her father?! And no her getting the last shot doesn't count. Man was already shot from the detective. Movie just went nowhere in between either. The aesthetic was the best part, but that's not enough to save it

    Agreed 100%. I liked the film a lot until the killer reveal. It disappointed me and got into 'jump the shark' type territory with that. I do agree with you though that it WAS at least set up sort of in the previous installments, so I guess I can't harp on it too much. I'd just have preferred something else. Despite all of that, I still enjoyed the film a lot. The killer reveal and the way he acted gave me '90s Heaven's Gate cult vibes more so that some kind of Christian fundamentalist extremism. Oh, and I knew Bette Davis Eyes was going to be featured at some point the second the film started with a Bette Davis quote 😂😂...

The gore is good when its there, maxine as a character is fun to watch and seeing her journey acheive fame by the end was satisfying. Wish they kind of delved deep with her ptsd from X but i think they did well enough, will buy this on blu ray when it comes out, finally a trilogy of horror without a single bad movie. My rankings:

    the ending could of been so much better. i knew right away that the hollywood ending was just a dream, so if they cut the movie right there it could of been a "was that a fantasy sequence?" ending like the ending of taxi driver, where you dont know if travis bickle really had a happy ending or if those were his final thoughts as he died. on the other hand, after cutting back to reality, i felt it would of been a better ending if she turned her dad in to the police, since we see what kind of violence she's capable of, it would of been a more interesting ending if she forgave him in an attempt to better herself. going from X rated movies to legit movies, and then going from acts of revenge to acts of forgivness and proving she is the better person than her hypocritical father. but instead she blows his head off and nothing is learned.

    This was the movie I was most looking forward to seeing this year. I have just gotten out of my screening. Hmmmm would have to be the weakest of the three for me. I enjoyed the humour. I enjoyed some of the Hollywood jokes. However overall it has more misses than hits I think. I think the trailer did this film an injustice. I’m not sure why we needed to have the Night Stalker feature in the trailer as it’s purely background. I was actually hoping it was going to turn out Maxxxine was the true Night Stalker. Very camp and hammy acting by the villain and I can’t work out yet whether this is intentional. Ha maybe it is and maybe its genius lol 3/5 for me.

    i feel like the film is intentionally camp, and you disliked that. i'm basing that on the fact you mentioned pearl and x feeling menacing. that's definitely not the vibe in this one. but it's intentional. this to me felt very much like a brian de palma film. dressed to kill and body double come to mind. those are technically horror films but they are based more in the exploration of shock and excess, to the point of campiness. i think that was the intention here, exploring the 80s over the top horror. it's less of a giallo and more of a de palma film. who arguably is inspired by directors like argento and the genre of giallo.

    I think the problem with you not liking this movie as much as you though you would, lies in expectations. X was pretty much a slasher. Pearl was more of a drama piece, and MaXXXine was more of a crime thriller.
