    To add to the Patrick Beverley “why doesn’t he guard the best offensive player” question, he (Rudy) is much like an NFL free safety. He watches the floor, stays close and protective of one player (coincidentally centers guard centers sorry not all teams have superstar centers) but then can switch and guide the defense to prevent points. Look at numbers, watch a game after reading this, with a critical eye.

      He's like a point guard to a good offence, everything runs smooth because of him. He is the anchor. His presence alone makes guys take more jump shots because they fear attacking him in the paint.

    Despite what anyone has to say about him, he's one of the greatest rim protectors of all-time. One of the greatest defenders of all-time. You can't scoff at 3 DPOTY awards. He's in competition for getting a 4th. "Well he can't guard players on the perimeter", most bigs can't lol. Respect his game. You'd love to have him on your team.

      He's even good at that, especially in the middle. He's simply the best defender of our time. The times where he's been least effective is when the Rockets used matchups to keep him baseline. Second year meeting, the Jazz down 0-2, made a scheme change. They overplayed Harden's stepback to meet Gobert. The defense was way better. Basically the best way to neutralize him is to stay the fuck away.

    Good interview, he’s so laid back and thoughtful with his answers. I don’t get how people criticise his defense so much, he is elite, end of. He plays within a system that has him anchoring the Jazz defense and he really does guard the whole of the opposing team at times - doing what it takes to win. It’s more fair to criticise his offense which needs improvement, that’s where teams have success with small ball schemes against the Jazz.. that and the lack of good perimeter defenders.

He’s been a serious threat down low for the pass years. Ive seen games where players would avoid going to the rim cause of him. Ben Wallace, Dwight, Dikembe esque but his career will outlast all of them. Certified HOF if he continues.

    NBA needs to do a better job marketing defensive stars. When it comes to DPOY, I hope the voters look into deflections, the number of shot contested, FG% when guarding the paint/perimeter and how does the team perform defensively when the player is on and off the floor. NBA needs to make those stats and highlights more appealing.

      No.. ppl say he’s overrated because he’s just a rim protector. He can’t guard the perimeter for his life and he’s still considered DPOY. There’s more to defense then just blocking shots

    • @improbablyyourdad8458
      @improbablyyourdad8458 Před 2 lety +3

      You just explained why he’s overrated. He isn’t a top defender all time, he’s just a rim protector. All he does is contest the paint, rebound, and dunk. He’s not good in the post, he can’t shoot, he can’t pass, he can’t defend the perimeter, etc. He’s basically Deandre Jordan with more athletic longevity.

    There are pros and cons with Rudy’s defense. You need him out there for rim protection but smaller guards can get around him.
    Depending on the matchup, it may be beneficial to keep Rudy off the court. Just depends on who they’re playing that night.
    He can’t be the *only* defensive mind on the floor. His teammates need to step up defensively as well!

      You definitely skipped the entire context of that.
      It wasn't because he didn't make the all-star team, it was because his mom was upset he didn't make it. Rudy's mom sacrificed A LOT, let him go play in another city when he was a teen. She was devastated he didn't make it and he got emotional when talking about that, not because he wasn't an all-star.
