      I’m going with the SmartSolar 150/35 for a smaller planned backup system, as I currently have a 7.2kW grid-tie, but would like a little backup “just in case”. Victron has a good reputation for a reason.

      This is comprehensive however it avoids the question of scale. If I wanted a 110 KW could I string 10 of these together? or 100? or 1000? You claim to have a big array, why not address issues of scaling within your reviews?

      I just added a 1800 watt solar array to my motorhome, two each 450 watt panels in series, and two sets in parallel, output 77v 24 amps. I have a generic 12v 3500 watt inverter, I have two Litime 12V 230Ah Plus LiFePO4 Battery Built-in 200A BMS, Max 2944Wh Energy, Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery’s connected in parallel. Looking for the correct Victron energy MPPT smart solar charge controller. I ordered a MPPT 100 l 30, but it looks like it’s max PV 400 watts. HELP

    I've watched a lot of your videos but I'm still a bit confused. This one helped a lot because it gives a good recommendation. But what I'd really like to see is a series of videos on the "ideal" full solar setup for various use cases, things like: small/medium/large home, shed/garage/barn, hot/temperate/cold climates, low/medium/high sunlight, grid backup/off-grid...and maybe other variables. Just an idea for you (with a little personal interest thrown in).

      Another great category for a video would be designing a full off-grid system that would be useful in the winter in places like the Pacific NW. Panel type and sizing theory, low idle draw inverter, heated or temp protected battery, something that can reasonably switch to generator on multi-day storms. A ton of interesting theorycraft there.

    I have 4 Victron MPPT controllers and 3000w/48v inverter and that system definitely beats my mpt and growatt systems, but price is also 2-3 times higher, if I’ll do it again I’ll go Victron all in, 0 fails in past 4 years, and low power mode on inverters is a game changer if you have small pv system

    100% agree with you here. Have three of these and have never had a moment of trouble. We have a full Victron system except for batteries. I have noticed that throught the day the load switches from one controller to another so each channel gets a break after the batteries are charged. Got a Quattro 15kva to replace the 12kw Growatt. The fans on the Growatt were loud! Quattro almost silent. After your video about connection of a Victron system we started buying Victron. Couldn't be happier.

      Same, Will's video on Victron for beginners opened me up to the idea of a full system and now I have 3phase, 2 charge controllers, a Battery monitor and energy meter all plugged into a Cerbo GX. BMS is now also plugged in making the BMV redundant but still love its time to go feature and accurate AH used readout.

    Hey Will - I'm very pleased to say I've been using one of these in my totally off-grid system (in Oz) for nearly a year now, and couldn't be happier. All Victron except for Safebatt batteries. My only wish is that I'd bought the 200 model with 4 inputs for more expansion, but it can parallel another one anyway.
    I'm kinda surprised it's taken you so long to cover this fantastic bit of kit, but well done.

    It has been interesting watching you evolve over the years Will. We use Victron in the marine world for many of the same reasons you've explained in this video. Cheaper can be good, but out on the water you need the best.

      Agreed. For ny next Sailboat, everything but the Batteries are going to be Victron, with an aft Cockpit 50mm x1.6mm wall 316 Stainless Steel Solar Arch, carrying 4 x 250watt high efficiency Monocrystalline Solar Panels, with high Quality AGM Batteries, not a Lifepo4 House Battery Bank, for better counterbalanced weight to the Solar Arch plus Panels. Why AGM ? Well I saw a graph of Life charge Cycles that flatlined at 3,500 Cycles, if discharge does not exceed 80%, plus a message from someone that had got 20 years out of their Batteries, before an electrical accident Trashed them. Plus Lead loves getting back to 100% state of Charge as fast as possible, so all I need is a Bank large enough to stay above 80% Capacity for a maximum of 12 hours, easily done with an inboard engine with enough surplus horsepower to spare 10hp for a high output Alternator with an external Smart Regulator, which will be run for an hour under load pre Dawn, and an hour post sunset, for heat exchanger hot water for showers, plus inverter run portable induction hob to cook Breakfast and evening meal, to save Cooking gas. It should be fun getting it to work. Change of direction re Batteries, came after communicating with a Chinese Lifepo4 Battery Nanufacturer, plus experience with other lithium batteries, they said discharge below 50%Capacity, and you destroy recharge Cycles, and other Lithium to Lifepo4, charging over 85% Capacity, and you shorten Battery Life. Does that apply to Lifepo4 Batteries too ? I Strongly suspect that it does tbh. If !ifepo4 usage restrictions for Optimum service life are as correct as I suspect, the better Deal, if tailored to usage properly, imho are AGM or Lead Carbon. Plus the extra low down displacement weight, can be really really useful on a Sailboat , and additionally assisted by things like an ICW height Mast, all chain for the Anchor, balancing weight Fuel and water tanks as well, as long as things are kept within the boat's gross displacement (a bit more expensive, as to stay on the right side, demands a bigger boat than the sub 40ft Sailboat I would otherwise prefer, not needing a diesel generator helps keep things not that much more than 40ft though thankfully) Best Wishes and Fair Winds.     The biggest drawback with Victron is the lack of UL listed stuff, no idea why such a high end company can't get it's act together to get stuff listed, they keep saying next year... five years later still virtually nothing from them is listed.

      It's funny because any Victron equivalent outperforms all the UL listed crap. Why do you need a EU company to pay for a useless US test, when those devices passed EU tests that are of higher specs?

    Biggest drawback to these units is the 20 amp PV input limitation. If you're using larger wattage panels that have Isc over 10 amps then you can't parallel any of the panels to keep the voltage below 450. The Victron 250/60 and 250/70 both can accept 35a max PV input which gives you more flexibility to series/parallel panel configs.

    I have all Victron gear in my RV and I didn’t even know this thing existed! To be fair I don’t need it for my 1500W of panels on a 12v system, but it’s still awesome haha. I have their 150/100 MPPT

      Yep. My custom-built cargo trailer conversion has two 480-watt panels with each having its own small Victron MPPT since having them in series created too much loss if both panel outputs weren't similar. Then I have a third 320-watt panel that is portable and gets placed out away from the unit in the best exposure. It has its own (third) Victron MPPT maximizing its output as well.

    A wind turbine tutorial would be very useful. I haven't seen a lot of videos covering it. Solar and wind are great together, but it's not the easiest setup.

      Agree, I've been running both for a year now an there is plenty of room for innovation in charge controllers and pitch/furling mechanisms and lithium battery BMS integration etc.
      I'm using the Air force controller and turbine since it can change pylontech safely, but has no pitch or furling so high winds it's always off

      A pretty serious problem with Wind generators is their rotation speed tends to be low, and causes frequency vibrations that attracts Birds, and particularly Bats. German Wind Farms for example, are pushing Birds of Prey towards extinction levels, and one windfarm site is killing circa w50,000 Bats a year. This where killing just one Bat, can get you a heavy fine and a Jail sentence. 🤔 Mine in my Smallholding, a small Wind generator, started worrying me after killing a few Bats and a couple of Barn Owls, so I removed it, and started designing a possible superspeed high rpm version to shift frequencies well up range to a point where it could become uncomfortable for Bats and Birds to go near, which would be above human hearing range. Life got in the way though, and it's still at the Drawing board stage. Ho Hum. 🤔

    Have two of the 200A units for our install later this summer. One thing about them we didn't anticipate was the requirement for very stranded PV and battery cable wire. 19 strand 10 AWG doesn't cut it. Need 87 strand 10 AWG or so I believe.
    Definitely looking forward to setting it up and glad you've given it your mark of approval.

      @@silverice9 Not according to Guy Stewart from Victron. He says ferrules are NOT to be used with Victron equipment. But lots of professional people use them with Victron stuff all the time on CZcams.

This is an extremely bad idea, especially in a Marine environment ent where the appearance of resulting problems, is rapidly accelerated. Good to see Victron not recommending their use tbh. Bob. 🤔👍

    I just bought my own two SmartSolar 150|35 for charging my coming mobile 2nd solar pv batteries (2× 12V 100Ah Amperetime) in a 2 string configuration. Nicely configured by the Victron App, dead quiet (fanless cooling design) and absolutely outdoor-approved.
    And also absolutely incredible short delivery. It has advantage to live only a couple of hundred km from their HQ and facility. 😅

    Midnite Classics are my choice :) They have AUX1 user settable relay to control remote stuff + arc fault + full internet for remote control and DIY data extraction without needing phone/bluetooth.

      Yeah I love my midnights I have 2 for the last 6years no problem.. I have 30 more panels and don't want to spend 600 each I would need 4 more . this one I would only need one its a hard choice to make....

    Great review! You really do get what you pay for with Victron equipment. Solid gear, very efficient and reliable, reasonably priced, and easy to use, and the interoperability with other Victron gear is seamless.

      Reasonably priced? You must be high. Victron is the most expensive solar gear you can buy, half again as expensive as f.ex. Deye/Sol Ark which is very high quality. Victron is too much money IMO.

    can you make a video about the difference between the victron quattro, multi-2, and multi plus ??? i get confused on what does what, or which is better for different applications.
    this is going to be my first solar install, (im looking at 2/3-10kw inverters) and id like to have ALL victron. i like the LF inverter type.

    I would love to see you test some Schneider equipment. Sunpower uses the XW-Pro inverter for their battery solutions (my panels have micro-inverters), but I've seen a few who use a pure Schneider ecosystem.

    I like everything about this unit -- except its $1300 price tag. Considering that for $500 less, you could just run a pair of Rich Solar 60-amp controllers ($400/each) in tandem, and while they may not have all of the same spiffy features, they'll still get the basic job done for a lot less money. Something to consider, for people on a budget.

    Nice all around unit, but not necessarily the best money can buy for every feature. 450V PV isn't bad, but most name brand (not China) grid tie inverters can do 600V. Hybrid inverters / charger setups like Schneider SW and XW also. For higher voltage panels, the higher voltage charge controllers / inverters are a better fit when you don't want to only have very few panels on an MPPT.

    You get what you pay for, and this MPPT just proves the point. The industry standard MC4 connectors is likely why the limit on array size. It pays to follow standards. I have been looking at their 250v models, this is in a class of its own.

    I've used mostly Victron in my camper and I like their products, they kept putting out updated firmware and sometimes even added features. But in my upcoming house I probably will take a Growatt instead, it has technically the same performance but also includes an 80A charger and 5kW inverter for a third of the price of the Victron alternative - and I rather buy more panels and units.

      I switch from epever to victron on my sailboat and it changed my life.
      From now on it is all victron for the controllers.

      @@imdo301 what was wrong with the EPEVER stuff? I’m an installer for RVs, commonly use both but have actually had fewer issues with EPEVER than victron. It does lack the user friendly interface though.

    Great to see some more Victron content! Unfortunately the have a bit to small charge controllers for my use, but I have understood Fronius have som large charge controllers that could work well in the Victron system. Had been great to see some content on Fronius equipment and how to get it working in the Vctrion system

    Don't forget it's Birthday 🎉 I would love to take full advantage of daylight from dawn to dusk hence high voltage, but I see startup voltage is only 120V I would have wanted lower startup voltage ⚡

    All Victron that you have tested and said how great they are I’m surprised this one is the only one you have in your system I thought you were using the other Victron that you tested because they were better than most of the other stuff you were testing. This was a surprise to me.

      In my other systems but not my main one. This thing is awesome for multiple arrays. I have tons of victron stuff but my main inverters are still 6500ex's. Can't beat them for the size weight output and efficiency.

    If you got long distance between panels and your solar sched, just use a Multiplus II, connect micro inverters to the AC output of the Multiplus, he will use the generated powerr to charge batteries and you'll just have 2 cables to run the 220V (or whatever 110V) from afar.

    Hi Will.
    Love your videos.
    One big downside of this MPPT is, that if you are using flooded batteries you will not be able to get this unit to do equalisation if you need more than 62Vdc on output.
    It used to be 60Vdc and Victron managed to crank it up to 62vdc, but that is it.
    I think people should know.
    Sometimes solution is to pull out one or two cells to lower your system voltage.
    Additionally if you need to equalize batteries with different charger you will have to disconect this one to protect it from higher voltage.
    There is not many dinosaurs like me around 😅, but I think people should know.

    They need to release a 600V version with higher per MPPT wattage limits. I'd literally need 7 of these for my arrays that are currently handled by a single Sol-Ark 15k.

    Former Victron owner and have a 3048LV now and it does great, but I will always wish that I could track and customize like I did with my old 12/24V Victron equipment.

    I have the pcm60x no noise at all. With 2 you can have 120A at 48v batteries!. I have it many years with no problem, and its very cheap. The disadvantages are the monitoring software and the input voltage at 145v. I want to buy victron smartshunt just to monitoring the system.

    Will you are a fountain of knowledge, sometimes it feels like we are drinking from a firehose, but it makes sense. Would love to see this setup with this Victron charge Controler in an off grid setup where AC input is not available, and requires a generator to charge the batteries using the EG4 Chargeverter.
    After watching your other videos of the possible risk and hazzard of voltage leakage in the All in One Systems, and the challenges of using a generator plugged into the AC input to charge the batteries, this setup seems like a solid safer way to isolate and manage your PV Voltage input, along with alternative battery charging options.

    Looking at the pricing in UK, I'd take 2 x 100A over the 200A for redundancy as there is little price difference. I have a 12V victron setup in an outbuilding. 2.5KW panels, 1200W inverter charger, 400AH. Works great. This is a test for the main house which I'm planning with this charge controller, + Victron inverter chargers all 48V. What I like about Victron is the local control, I'm not reliant on random suppliers web portals.

    Like the video but would appreciate your honest comparison versus the other option for DC charging from Victron.
    I am installing 43 x 470W panels and am very flexible to configure. A combination of 1 x RS48/5600 and 1 x RS450/200TR on the DC charging side is one option to go, the other is to use 4 Solar Smart chargers, 1 x 150/70TR, 1 x 250/70 and 2 x 250/100s
    There is obviously a cost difference of as the RS units will cost 50% more. The RS units would make the strings easier to install but not a huge deal. The wire run to the inverters is less than 19m in 6mm MC4, so accept there is lower loss with higher voltage but and not sure its that significant.
    Using the the 4 MPPTs the advantages seem to be
    • 50% Lower cost
    • lower start voltage start up Voltage
    • easier to replace faulty unit
    • possibility to oversize 130% on 1 or 2 arrays where I know I will not have peak power
    The only major disadvantage is extra wiring
    In this situation would you believe the improved CAN communication is worth the extra cash or can you think of another reason to justify the 50% premium of going to the 2 RS units??

    I like my MUST PC1800F controllers. Yeah, 150V input, but 100A output at 48V. And yes, they're noisy, but they're in a separate building. They're only 200€ each, and have been going for years now.

    I love how your downside is barely a downside. You can max out the 450/200 with only two array inputs (4 wires) and the 450/100 with a single input. You are allowed 7600w per tracker

      Would love to understand this better …. I am not sure I understand the spec sheet - as you say, it does not appear to be 2/4 completely independent parallel systems? I assumed that the 7600W was to allow for over-paneling …. Does it do anything with excess wattage?

    I have a baby Victron for a SLA battery and it has been great, Sure way more expensive but as it has proper boost charge of my SLA battery that'll last longer so money well spent.

    I've got a rs450/100 with a cerbo gx but the only problem the multiple 2 make up for the low noise from the rs, it connected to byd lvs battery seems to work really well, recommend the cerbo gx fantastic bit of kit

    Hi Will, I agree with you, Victron is great but when it comes to repairs, they are not so fine any more.
    The repairability of Victron components tends to zero. Which is a shame (and for that price tag).

    At 450v this is in the neighborhood of many EV batteries. Not super straightforward to access HVDC lines in most cars, but for those with DC fast charging...would be kinda nice to fake a DC fast charger and use as input through a precharge resistor+relay.

    With the amount of money I spent on the rest of the system I thought it would be prudent to invest in a decent victron MPPT
    So I got the TR 200amp version
    I plan to hook up 40x 410 watt solar panels each string will have 10 panels

      Be sure to do the temp correction and look at VOC to make sure 10 in series won't result in too much voltage. Also, the MPPT RS has a limit of your battery float voltage X 8 that can't be exceeded that you'll want to look into when sizing strings.

    Without going the all-in-one inverter route for total off grid, do you think it's cheaper to assemple solar array to MPPT controller to 48 volt 100ah battery? I'd like to save money of course and kind of like the low frequency 6000w inverters. I think I'll need a 1500 watt array to deliver the PV power. Sound right?
