  • It's finally got to the point where running an old pump will cost a lot more than buying a new one it's a shame really as some of these old pump have many more years running left in them they just cost too much to run.

    Thanks for doing the calculations on the electricity usage. I did the same when I sized my pump and it has saved me a lot of money over the past 5 years.

    Another great video. The variable pump payback idea is a great shout.
    Loving the equipment and fish discussions. I'd be interested in knowing more about the fish side of things, especially the food you're using, seasonal care and things to do to get the colours out.

    Good to hear from you, Adam. I'm a big fan of DC pumps. It's been a big change in the saltwater aquarium industry, along with DC wavemakers. Much more efficient, quieter, and controllable! Another huge improvement in efficiency for aquarists is LED lighting. No more metal halide and other insane lighting setups. They are lightweight, smaller, cooler, use far less energy, and most importantly they are now producing better quality light. Technology rocks!

      Yeah some of the DC pumps are quite impressive ive never used one myself but ive installed a few for people that have been really impressive.
      I find it quite impressive how efficiency of these things always improves it makes you wonder what will come next 🤔

    but I’m up grading to profidrum combibio 30 with uprated amalgam uv a 10k ltr and 20kltr hour pumps (vario) and a air source heater 1.5kw but puts out 7.5kw of heat dreading the bills from this set up 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ great video by the way 😉😊

    Hi Adam, I found super fish under quote wattage when you actually meter it compared to other pumps although they all do it. One thing I will say is my EA pumps used 88watts at 50% when new but after a few years they now use 115watt at the same flow rate. It’s just the wear and tear on impeller and casing, I clean them regularly which does bring the wattage down but never back as far as the original 88w.

    Reliability is a key to though. Old AC pumps are stout and some of these cheap DC pumps are shit. So you have a system that can take a dump at anytime.

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  Před 2 lety

      I find superfish pumps pretty reliable but I know what you mean my main pond pumps are bullet proof I wouldn't trade them for any currently available pump but there's not much of a saving if I did swap them I might save £100 a year so not worth buying a £2000 pump.

    Embarrassed I’m turning to you for advice haha!!
    I’ve got a nexus 220 running off of a 4” bottom drain, and fed back via a evo aqua 10000
    Varipump running at 60%.
    My problem is the outer chamber keeps trying to empty!!
    I’ve done a back flush a few times but it’s still doing it!!
    Have you any idea what it could be please?.
    Thanks pal

    Do you like handle/stroke your fish at all? Are the the kind that generally don't mind being touched? My goldfish don't mind me poking them or touching them. And those koi seem sooooo hug-able xD

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  Před 2 lety

      Yeah I do stroke them all the time a few I used to handle one really liked being picked up and thrown to other side of pond it would then come straight back as fast as it can unfortunately its too big to pick up now so he just gets a stroke like the rest 🙂.
      I also teach them to come to my voice a lot people forget that hearing is one of their biggest senses over eyesight.

    Hi Adam, my pond pumps' power consumption is rated as 40 Watts, but when I plugged it into one of those energy monitors that you've used in some of your videos, it came up as 31 Watts. Any idea why it would consume less power than it's rated to? It's not controllable or anything. Also, I've inherited a koi pond and I'm loving it! And finding your videos very helpful, so thanks!

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  Před 2 lety +1

      If you restrict a pump or its pumping up hill it will consume less power it will only use full power when pumping at full volume.
      There also could be some degree of error in the tester.

    • @souldrinker7008
      @souldrinker7008 Před 2 lety

      @@AdamJulyan Ah, well it's restricted by a flow control valve and it's pumped up about a meter, so that would explain it! How come it uses less power pumping up hill? I'd have assumed it would use more as it's working harder? Thank you for your reply! 🙂

    • @AdamJulyan
      @AdamJulyan  Před 2 lety

      @@souldrinker7008 yeah its the opposite of what you would think.
      Imagine a heavy bucket of water and you start spinning it getting up to speed is quite difficult but once your at speed it becomes a lot easier to just maintain the speed. The impellor is doing exactly the same as the bucket except its constantly trying to get up to speed as more water keeps falling onto it but if you block some water the impellor has a much easier time. If you stop all the water it will have nothing to do but maintain speed of the water already in the impellor so will use a lot less power.
      It might seam like the pressure of water is trying to escape but its just doing the same as the bucket if you has a hole on the bottom the water would seam to be push out as the centrifugal force acts on it.
      Hope that make sense 🙂
